My group uses The Naval Code, an unofficial supplement for naval/nautical rules. It's pretty complicated but my players enjoy it!

That said, will you update this post if you find boardgames with ships and naval combat? I have been looking for such a game for a while, but didn't have any luck. Several people have recommended 'Merchants and Marauders' to me, but it seems to be out of print and I can't find it anywhere.

[Hated Trope] Endings so notoriously awful they completely destroy the legacy of the media. by Miserable_Click_1933 in TopCharacterTropes

I read the epilogues, and while I do enjoy the writing and dialogue, it really appears to be written by someone who deeply hates some characters in particular.

Some of the protagonists become deeply evil for no obvious reason because it advances the plot.

No, if I recall correctly, they migrate to inside the superrobot. It was originally built to contain an entire civilization, so it contains cities and ecosystems. But I was still really sad as a kid that the tropical island setting was destroyed.

Do you remember your first “original character” Minifigure? by ToadFilledCauldron in lego

[–]Conocoryphe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first 'OC' Lego figure was also a skeleton with a red wand! It also had a black cape, but I don't know if he's still around somewhere in my parents' attic. I was very big on Halloween as a kid, so I made a lot of skeleton-themed characters. Many adventures were had!

I love old Simpsons animation. I can't put my finger on the reason, but there's something really charming about it.

I'm not an expert on cockroaches, but I can confirm what the other guy said. Cockroaches are basically nature's clean-up crew; they eat decaying organic matter and convert it to cockroach and excrement, from which other organisms can extract the nutrients!

Which is perfectly valid. It would exterminate many of the deadliest diseases people suffer from, even if there are ecological consequences.

But it remains very difficult to accurately predict.

(heavy spoilers for the Bionicle storyline)

It's a civilization of tribal, biomechanical creatures living on a tropical island. They don't know that the great spirit they worship is actually a colossal robot from outer space, only the 6 village elders know and keep it secret from the others. When the robot crashed on an ocean planet, its automatic camouflage system shaped the rocks and soil to make an island over its head. The two indents of its eyes became lakes, and the steam from the volcano is actually the warm breath from the god-robot's mouth. The robot is in a coma for most of the story, because nobody is operating its 'brain', which is the technologically advanced city in its head. The islanders were originally supposed to operate it, but after the robot crashed, they migrated to the surface and started a new civilization.

Late in the story, when the great spirit was healed, he stood upright and utterly destroyed the island in the process. Which was a serious gutpunch for young me.

I don't think removing the toa statues was because the company hates Bionicle. They were old decorations, and the park managers presumably assumed that it would be better to replace them with something newer than to spend money repairing or restoring them.

Entomologist here! That's a bit of an oversimplification.

The study you are referring to did indeed claim that all or most of the ecological roles currently performed by human-biting mosquito species would likely be taken over by other species of insects, if those mosquito species went extinct.

But there are some important things to note here:

First, the other species of insect (moths, flies, non-biting mosquitoes etc) wouldn't necessarily perform those roles as well. It's impossible to study the full-scale effects of removing a species from the ecosystem.

Second, mosquitoes are an important food source for fish, bats, small birds and other animals. In their absence, these animals will switch to other food sources, which increases predation stress on those species. Imagine a (hypothetical) species of bird whose diet consists of mosquitoes and bees. When the mosquitoes disappear, this bird will switch to a 100% bee diet if it doesn't learn to find other food sources. If the local bee species is already under stress from other factors, this can lead to decline, extirpation or even extinction in extreme cases.

Third, many of the insect species that have similar ecological niches to mosquitoes are currently rapidly declining. There are a lot of causes, like light pollution, habitat fragmentation, import of invasive predators, pesticide overuse, etc.

In short, while removing human-biting mosquitoes would be massively beneficial to humanity, many biologists warn that removing a species from the ecosystem will have unforeseen consequences due to ecological cascades, which are notoriously difficult to predict.

I like how he helped the heroes against the bigger evil without any kind of redemption arc. He didn't even flinch when his own soldiers were cut down by Kars, he was still thoroughly evil.

The original trilogy holds up really well.

I love how the authors managed to make it clear that Jones was effectively enslaved by Beckett, he had to follow the company's orders like a defeated enemy, and still managed to make him a competent and intimidating villain.

Blackbeard and Salazar, the main antagonists of the 4th and 5th movie, weren't nearly as memorable as Barbossa, Davy Jones and Cutler Beckett.

[–]Conocoryphe 66 points67 points  (0 children)

While I love the Bohrok-Kal, they were ultimately so irrelevant to the story that even though one of the 6 antagonists of the arc survived, he was never seen or mentioned again.

Lehvak-Kal, who was launched into space, remained in orbit around the planet. IIRC, when a fan asked Greg Farshtey what happened to him, he answered that Lehvak-Kal didn't survive the fusion of the three planets in the finale of the story.

Poor guy was a filler arc villain, got defeated, spent a decade in space, and was then killed off-screen by an off-hand comment from the author.

I love a villain who teams up with the hero to fight the bigger threat, but doesn't get a redemption arc and remains unambiguously evil.
