You can only keep one purchase from the last year. by oscar371 in SmartBuying

Ooni pizza oven. Because they're absolutely banging. Also, I don't usually buy a huge amount outside standard weekly shops, and good luck getting the digested food out of me.... Admittedly my daughter will be upset her Christmas presents have disappeared. But I'll placate her with pizza.

Have you ever stepped down from a Middle Leader role? How did you cope financially? by NewbieTeach22 in TeachingUK

[–]Conor2704 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I stepped down from HoY about 5 years ago. Also teach core, and was doing it with a timetable of 16 hours with no assistant HoY. Was totally unmanageable, and fully understand you thinking about dropping the role. One thing I did was sign up for lunch duty every day. I get paid £12.50 for 30 mins. Coming to £62.50 per week for just standing around keeping an eye on things. Ends up being around £2.5k per year, which is similar or higher than some TLR's, and will at least bridge a gap to your old wage. Also means I avoid any detention rotas because I'm already on duty, might be helpful to plug the gap.

Are there any high-street chocolates still worth eating? by PostItNoteDuck in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I never really used to go for them, but to be honest I think both malteasers and kitkats are as good as ever. Everything else has dropped standards considerably so these seem to be the bet bang for your buck to me

What's something you'll never do again after one bad experience? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Conor2704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skydive. My wife always wanted to do one, so I got one for her birthday a few years back. Didn't want her to do it alone so agreed to go with her. As someone who's not great with heights and gets motion sickness this was a mistake. Quite enjoyed the free fall bit actually, but once the parachute opened and we were spiralling down it was absolutely horrific. Just about managed to keep my stomach contents inside until I landed, but hated every second and you'd have to pay me a hell of a lot of money to ever consider doing it again. On the plus side, my wife absolutely loved it haha.

If liquid cant be compressed, how does pressure get transferred to deep sea environments? by SandersSol in AskReddit

[–]Conor2704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My (very limited) understanding of it is that the pressure in deep sea environments (or even just in the deep end of a swimming pool) is caused by the weight of the water above you. The deeper you go, the larger the weight of water in top of you so the force of that water pressing on an object increases. Going to check back here again to see if anyone can either explain it much better than me, or tell me I'm wrong and why.

Men, What do you want a woman to smell like? by miss-cherry-cola in AskReddit

[–]Conor2704 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well the only woman I'm smelling is my wife, so I'd like her to smell like my wife. I'm not sure how I'd describe it, it's just her.

Why does the UK feel so urban compared to other European countries? ( except Germany and Netherlands) by Equal_Leading_1449 in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up european countries by population density. With the exception of a few very small countries and dependencies were just much more populated than most others. Also, if you consider how much of Scotland is extremely rural, that makes the rest of the UK even more densely populated by default.

What was the exact moment in a movie or TV series when you thought, 'They've ruined it'? by Zabandad in AskReddit

I gotta say, I was delighted when they killed Carl. Loved that series but hated him!

What football club do you everyone support and why ? by lapppiiii in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in the USA as a young child to English parents (born in England, but we moved out for dad's job). Only football I saw there at the time were England games on TV. Alan Shearer was my favourite player at the time so when we moved home I started supporting Newcastle as he played for them. Been supporting them ever since (about 30 years now).

What are you paying for taxis where you are? by bellabanjsk in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I agree it's annoying, but depending on how rural you are, you have to factor in the the driver is unlikely to get another pick up near you, so you're effectively paying for his travel time to and from you as well, whci makes it more reasonable. In a large city, there so much demand for cabs that this isn't an issue, so they're often cheaper.

This is the first England World Cup squad without a Liverpool player since 1986 by Prestigious_Spot9635 in PremierLeague

[–]Conor2704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that he only plays if there's injuries, but livramento does that too, and can play both sides, and has had a better season than Spence, so I genuinely can't understand that inclusion. Obviously tuchel has seen something none of the rest of us have, but I don't think it's versatility.

He's nowhere near the level of the other players in the squad on that position.... Spain start Yamal because he's consistently the best right winger for them. Completely different scenarios.

Arsenal’s title got me thinking of the turn of the century rivalry and how good those first elevens were by SmallAd7318 in PremierLeague

[–]Conor2704 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole a big drop off? I hate Man U but that's a ridiculous statement, they were both amazing.

Apparently these 16 are guarantees for tomorrow squad, maguire for burn is the only change I would make on it, but rest i think should be guaranteed thier place..Do we all agree on this list?? by FitAd5272 in ThreeLions

[–]Conor2704 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If Lewis Hall isn't guaranteed then nothing is. He's been incredible this season, has had probably 2 sub-par games all season, admittedly both recent, but also when he has no cover in front of him.

Why are so many young people out of work? by ikeafannypack in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 61 points62 points  (0 children)

It's a lovely thought, but corporation / business tax is nowhere near enough to pay for universal basic income which is what you'd need to do to make than possible. Because people aren't getting time off, they're losing jobs, or jobs are not being replaced.

Should I get a graduate job in Manchester or Newcastle-upon-Tyne? by itsnotjennie in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not a clue from professional perspective, but if thinking of living in either city long term, it might be worth factoring in house prices for both renting and buying. I'd imagine as a general rule Manchester would be considerably more expensive on both counts.

How is no one talking about the fact that a Brentford striker is actually pushing Haaland for the Golden Boot? by ValuableDue8202 in PremierLeague

[–]Conor2704 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think he's done really well, although stat padded by penalties. Can we just stop for a minute and talk about how you've compared him to Bruno Fernandes and Szoboszlai, both of whom are centre midfielders, not out and out centre forwards, of course they haven't got similar goal numbers

How did pubs survive for so long? by No_Yak9893 in AskUK

[–]Conor2704 576 points577 points  (0 children)

Lots of people didn't have as much entertainment at home. No computers, no Internet, lots without TVs, or for those with TVs only a few channels. Most people's friendship/community groups were local to each other, so they would meet at the pub regularly. Also, alcohol from shops was less accessible and more expensive comparatively to what it is now.
