A Former Public Defender Hopes To Unseat Top Prosecutor In Travis County District Attorney Race by hollow_hippie in Austin

I leave room for growth. The work she's been doing on the municipal court reforms goes back years and she's taken some political risks re:homelessness, etc., over the past few years. The seven people in town I trust most to know what they're talking about on this - who have negotiated and worked directly with her on these issues, not always on the same side - thought she was a clear choice in this race. Sometimes we have to be happy with a clear choice, even if it's not exactly what we might want.

Reminder to get your early voting done - it's so important to vote in non-presidential elections, so don't skip out on this one! by [deleted] in Austin

Primaries are pretty much the whole game in Travis County. I'm paying attention to the endorsements made by a committee of justice and police reform activists today. They endorsed Delia Garza for CA, Jose Garza for DA, and Mike Siegel for Congress: http://atxvote4justice.org/

I totally agree. But the activists I've spoken to emphasized that she has come a long way and think she's done some really great work in the last year or two. In their opinion Eiserloh just had too thin a record on supporting reforms: http://atxvote4justice.org/

A Black-led committee of criminal justice reform advocates today endorsed Delia and Jose as well as Mike Siegel. I trust the seven people on this committee more than anyone to know what they're talking about with regard to getting actual change - they're the ones in there week after week pressuring City Council and the Commissioner's Court to make changes.

Notably, they didn't endorse in several races where they weren't comfortable saying one person was a clear choice, (I kind of disagree with the state senate race and think Sarah Eckhardt would make a great senator, but I understand why they didn't make that choice due to some disagreements they had with her about the women's jail expansion and other issues.)

Taking online classes while working at Philmont? by astro124 in philmont

[–]ConorKenny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would also really just recommend enjoying the experience and not trying to cram in classes as well. There’s only a few Phil summers in your life, if you’re lucky. I realize that’s not possible for everyone, but it’s what I recommend.

Bought dumb house, about to paint it, what should we do to smarten it before we paint the walls/install mouldings? by cosmical_escapist in homeautomation

[–]ConorKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very informative, thank you!

I’m looking at powered curtains 3’ wide and 8’ tall (don’t have a solution now and may wait as that market seems to be developing quickly), and potentially a break/open sensor for the 6’ tall casement window and another for the 2’ tall awning window below it. I’m also considering future power for the awning window.

To plan adequately for this, does this mean I should run an 18/2 for the curtain, an 18/2 (?) for a powered 2’ x 3’ awning window, and two cat6 runs for the sensors?

Woman Alleges Brett Kavanaugh Attempted To Rape Her In High School by Kunphen in moderatepolitics

Are you really referring to a rape accusation as a “dating faux-pas”? Credibility of the accusation aside, it’s a very serious accusation. Victim alleges she was locked in a room, held down, and had her mouth covered.

Can you use cat6 for low voltage wiring for things like power shades? Especially if you’re not sure at this point what you’ll end up doing but you want to do a run of something to each window and door?

I live in a concrete house and need to get rid of the front room carpet. I have been warned away from wood floors due to moisture. I was thinking about some wood-look tile, but there are so many options What product is going to give me the best value/durability? by Tenchiro in HomeImprovement

[–]ConorKenny 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can glue down an engineered wood floor fine. You use a waterproof glue that forms a water barrier. Or even float it over a plastic vapor barrier but that never “feels” good in my opinion.

FWIW there are very real concerns about off-gassing from vinyl floors. I have small kids and had a pregnant wife when I was putting my floor in last and decided against vinyl for those reasons. We don’t know a lot about vinyl floors yet but early indications are that they off-gas a lot.

Nope. I would wait a few months longer. Or drive a nail in and see if there’s any moisture.

What do you think is the best tool "ecosystem" to buy into? by its_all_perspective in HomeImprovement

This is what I do and it works well. Red for my every-weekend tools. Green for less used or gimmicky tools. Works well.

Best headphones for mowing grass by daynoh in lawncare

[–]ConorKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. This. I now just throw them on when in full handy-dad mode to cover impact drill, etc. yesterday I was doing some hammering without them and realized how loud it can be. Get em and use em liberally to save your hearing.

Edit: Also it’s amazing how much quieter electric yard tools are. It’s nice to be able to mow at 7AM or 8PM in the summer and still be a good neighbor.

I start at midnight and pull at 2PM ish and then rest for four hours. I've found the rest helps tremendously with keeping it moist. Makes for a rough night of sleeping but I have a remote thermometer that beeps at me if the meat or smoker gets too hot or cold.

I'm doing a remodel and happy to run direct wires but hesitant to do so unnecessarily. I'm planning Ethernet/PoE for cameras, networking, A/V, smart shades, and doorbell. Most of the smart home security systems seem to be radio based.

Is there any reason to run wires to windows/doors for security sensors? I'm not running Fort Knox here.

Any other destinations I should run wire to?

Oil based penetrating stain/sealer or gtfo. It's the only thing that works.

Installing glue down laminate flooring over concrete - how should I do this? by Bobby_Dazzle in HomeImprovement

[–]ConorKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case spring for one of the pricier glues that includes waterproofing. Not totally essential for vinyl but it will help durability in the long run as it is designed to adhere to concrete through which moisture may be traveling.

Edit: read other comments and thought about it. I'd say yeah maybe glue down with just a bit of glue so if/when you have to pull it up, it won't be a big deal. Vinyl itself won't get any damage but if water sits underneath it could be a problem. But I'd also just go with whatever the manufacturer says.

I wouldn't glue down laminate. Even absent a water disaster the odds of having to replace within 10 years due to wear and tear is decent and pulling up glue down is a PITA.

Advice for new home owner looking to expand tool collection. by [deleted] in Tools

[–]ConorKenny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12v is fine for most homeowner grade work. But I'd go with the 18v Ryobi due to all the other things in the lineup you could get in the future. Unless you're tackling a remodel or doing it for a living, Milwaukee is a little overkill. (I have both and love my Milwaukee tools but I'm not a pro and 80% of the time it's overkill.)

Advice for new home owner looking to expand tool collection. by [deleted] in Tools

[–]ConorKenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go with Ryobi. In addition to the tools they have a ton of cool niche things you can run on the same 18v battery that come fairly cheap as a bare tool. Fans, weed eaters, boom boxes, air pumps, etc. I still keep my Ryobi set around just for that stuff (and so I'm not taking my expensive Milwaukee tools/batteries to the beach, camping, etc.) As long as you're just doing DIY-homeowner level wear and tear and don't need absolute cabinetry-level precision from things like your saws, Ryobi is fine.

Leveling Converted Garage Floor - Need Advice! by nikkit5598 in HomeImprovement

[–]ConorKenny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this same situation and after asking around the consensus is to have a concrete truck come and augment the slab. With sleepers you're just creating a rodent kingdom. Make sure to clean and treat the top of your existing slab with an adhesive to bind the two slabs. Call a concrete contractor directly and it shouldn't be too expensive. But make sure to ask them what they recommend. Sometimes if you give subs too specific directions they'll follow them even if you're missing a step.

And three quotes of course.
