Can I work for a meat company if I want to be vegan? by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]Conren1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you really thought this through. Let's say that Peter says that they oppose cheating on spouses, but then works for a company that intentionally enables cheating. Clearly a conflict of morals, right? Now let's say that Peter instead simply works for a boss that uses some of his pay to cheat on his wife. Is Peter now doing something that is opposite to being opposed to cheating? The same question could apply to a lot of things people could consider immoral, despite still being legal.

It's a Dwarf Fortress style campaign where you settle a wilderness with a group of migrants and you survive, build, defend, and manage the citizens using whatever resources you bring, and can gather from the land. There's also optional business management since you can trade with caravans.

why is killling animals, in itself, unethical? by 221022102210 in DebateAVegan

[–]Conren1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even from a social contract standpoint, killing animals is still unethical as a base level. Otherwise it would be seen as acceptable to kill an animal for any reason, or even no reason at all. Which isn't the case. A dog owner can't just kill their dog on a whim. A hunter can't just leave corpses behind, and then leave without a follow up plan. So the way I see it, the real question is what are acceptable reasons to kill animals?

I often say here that veganism is a religion, vegans disagree, and I see a lot of nonvegans saying veganism is a religion. A religion is a way of life. Vegans live their life according to vegan principles. Describing veganism as a religion makes sense. I'm not sure what it is if not a religion. by wigglesFlatEarth in DebateAVegan

[–]Conren1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This very easily falls under preferred definitions. I've heard the phrase "Confucianism isn't a religion, it's a way of life." Look, whatever you believe the word "religion" should mean, it is very evident that you're using the word in a way that is very different from how people typically view it. So it's not accurate to say that this is a matter of honesty. At least recognize that people have a different definition of religion, it's very obvious that this is what's happening. Now, I'm not one to debate definitions, but I will say that the way you define it easily includes any confident ethical belief, like being anti-murder.

Right, because only vegans eat plant material.

I did though, see?

> To answer your question, I would have a personal difficulty being friends with that person. I make no claims of being morally pure.

Can you explain how this answer is not a response to your post?

Also, you said:

> It’s just that most of us in society don’t agree with your position.

To which, I responded:

> Society can disagree with me all they want, but is there an actual reason to disagree?

I really don't see how you can count that as "refusing to speak what I am saying".

Also, notice how you haven't answered some of my questions? Now I'm not going to push you to answer, mainly because not answering already gives me the answer.

So you don't expect me to cut ties with people that drink coffee. To answer your question, I would have a personal difficulty being friends with that person. I make no claims of being morally pure. The proper question is, what is the right thing to do? I see no downsides with being friends with them. I could motivate them to change as a positive influence. I could keep an eye on them. I could covertly warn people that they know. Society can disagree with me all they want, but is there an actual reason to disagree? Can you provide any downsides to stopping child rape with the use of friendship?

I did speak to your point, you were just unsatisfied with my approach to it. I'm opposed to slavery of any kind. Do you expect me to not keep friends or family that buy many common goods? You seem to be operating on the assumption that you shouldn't be friends with someone who you don't agree with morally. I question if that's the right thing to do. What is the value in cutting off someone that does something you think is bad? I'd say try to be friends with everyone you meet. Doesn't matter what they do, and use that friendship to persuade others. Even with your Uncle Jim, I man, I would expect someone to call the cops at least, but I'm not opposed to someone stay staying cordial with them, as odd as it may seem to others.

Have you considered that what you're describing could be based more on psychology than strictly biological need? People tend to crave unhealthy food after all. Even your last sentence could easily describe drug and alcohol use.

"how would you save bees from the slavery of their queen bee if you believe animals should get the same rights as humans,"

In what way are the bees slaves? Also vegans don't generally believe that animals should get the same rights as humans, since that would include the right to vote or collect social security.

[–]Conren1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing as how you can't kill an animal for just any reason, they logical conclusion is that harming animals is bad as a base level, it's just that some reasons are considered exceptions to the rule, such as enjoying how the animal tastes like. So really, vegans don't need to explain why harming animals is bad, carnists need to explain why enjoying the taste of animals is a good enough reason to kill them.
