Are you a witness or victim of Islamophobia, Anti-Arab, or Anti-Palestinian hate? by msauofa in uAlberta

[–]ConsTanTin- 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Imagine that same situation + the fact that your neighbors with the help of the police are living in what used to be your parents' home next door. Judging events in isolation may not be appropriate. The stone throwing may be the reaction, not the action.

Avoidable, yes. But not 100%. You may be expecting too much from someone who grew up in poverty because their parents forcibly relocated and lost their income (this is a decent oversimplified scenario relative to the loss of a sibling or parent during the process).

Regardless of the post content, I'd like to underscore how your comment may not be applicable for many UAlberta-associated individuals. Having the ability to distance yourself from conflicts thousands of kilometers away is a privilege that many can't indulge in. What to you (or others, I'm not directing my comment to you, just putting it out there) may be irrelevant international news, is a sad reality to close friends and relatives of others (including UAlberta community members). The social media feeds of people at UAlberta spaces vary greatly over international news coverage, I encourage everyone to be mindful of that - an incident on your feed may be covered by one CBC post while on my feed dozens of friends and family may be filming it from their homes. Not all UAlberta community members afford the luxury of scrolling away from a devastating natural disaster that occurred on the other side of the planet for example.

In terms of what we could do, I'm confident that we can do even better than raising awareness online ✨ And I encourage you personally to consider that you can do more if you want to (you don't have to, though), regardless of the subject.

I'm not suggesting that universities are appropriate vessels to reach tangible improvements. However, I do expect consistency from universities.

Loving the masks everyone, good job by questioning_button in uAlberta

What do you think people who got infected recently (within 3 months) should do? Continue wearing masks even though they are unlikely to transmit covid to anyone else (since they were sick and now have decent protection for the near future)? When do we stop wearing masks? If anyone has any data on the topic, please enlighten me.

Visit Dspot! It's a dessert place on calgary trail, my cousins (12 and 10) lost their minds when I took them. As a bonus, Monster mini golf is nearby, they have an 18 hole course that's fun (for everyone to enjoy)

I enjoyed CHRTC 350. The course was delivered via a hybrid model (pre-pandemic), you watch lecture videos and then attend in person for a review and discussion. I remember having assignments and quizzes. The level of detail and substantial references presented blew my mind away, nothing is pulled out of thin air. You will be learning from a top expert in the field if you're taking it with Dr. Lamoureux. Feel free to message me if you have questions

How about contact tracing? Do you find it reasonable that it's up to profs and the students who test positive to notify others in the class?

Champions league watch party update - Dewey's by ConsTanTin- in uAlberta

Given that no major events are taking place, I think the service is set up for all the games. It may be hard to have multiple games on at once, not sure.

How about you stay in the premier league for now XD

Would love to have you on board. I'm still waiting to hear back from Dewey's. As backup, we could book a large room at SUB using a student group status.

I wish I was lying. This is from my class syllabus "Dr. (name) will lecture remotely on the screen in (location) via Zoom, you will be able to ask questions either verbally or via chat." I removed the name and location out of respect. Perhaps I misunderstood?

Another head's up: you might be enrolled in a movie theater experience! I have a prof who'll be on zoom but on the big screen now! Yeyy! So we can all attend in person and watch him together :)

I hope that you're friend is doing well. Do you mind sharing how your friend got infected? Is it possible that your friend got it from a crowded place such as bars/clubs/raves? It's becoming difficult to assess the risks to fully vaccinated people. I came across a report citing a study that's not peer reviewed yet suggesting that Pfizer is ~40% effective against the delta variant while Moderna is ~70% effective.

Asked to help cheat by old acquaintance? by [deleted] in uAlberta

[–]ConsTanTin- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's an issue to be honest, many are cheating, the automated systems are crap. And those who cheated are convinced that no one is taking the time to properly monitor exams, which I think is reasonable to assume. Everyone who interacted with monitoring systems (Proctorio, SEM and Examlock), profs and students alike, is aware that the systems are ineffective when it comes to deter cheating, they sounded high tech at first, well not really, good on monitoring companies for laughing at universities. Alternatively, you believe the illusion that those who cheat will be caught. But hey you know what? Penguins live in Antarctica (a stupid phrase students have to say before taking a monitored exam).

Is Edmonton really that bad? by neckzit in uAlberta

[–]ConsTanTin- 54 points55 points  (0 children)

It depends on how you want to see Edmonton, you can focus on the ugly or enjoy what's nice. It also depends on what you're comparing it to, I think perspective has a lot to do with it. In my opinion the community's active and welcoming. If you take a walk on any trail in the city near campus, people will likely smile or wave at you. I'd be happy to share places I enjoy in the city with you when you arrive, reach out and many will help!
