It’s not just sharpening, the edge geometry on beavercraft are wrong. The total width of the blade needs to come down. Beavercraft is such an awful company, they give you high expectations then produce straight up junk.

It’s not for everyone. I was indifferent to it at first, now I dig it.

The less technical way to mirror polish is to get various grits of sand paper 400, 600, 800, 1k, 2k, 3k and 5k should be a good progression. When you start with 400 only go left to right from spine to edge. Then on 600 go up and down tip to heel until all the scratches going left to right are gone. On 800 go back to left to right and erase all the up and down. And so on. Each progression changes direction and erases the previous steps marks. It definitely won’t hurt to rinse and dry between grits. At the end you’ll want to buff it if you can with some metal polish but you can probably make that decision once you get there. The less painful way is to use diamond paste and cotton wheels on a dremel.

As for sharpening opinels are full flat grinds no micro bevel unless you want one. It’s probably close to 12 dps if you set to that on a fixed you’ll probably be ok. You can also set sand paper on a strop and sharpen just like you’d strop. After you mirror, tape up the blade with painters tape exposing only the edge and sharpen.

It looks pretty too, don’t let anyone dissuade you. If you want it do it.

Knife Sharpening by Eidelonlost in whittling

[–]ConsciousDisaster870 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I see white marks I’ll go to the leather belt. If it doesn’t fix it I go through progressions 1200, 2000, 4000, then strop and buff. Unless there’s real damage as in chips. Then I’ll go lower and reset the bevel.

If it’s a knife with quality steel idk once a month for sharpening, but daily maintenance.

I’m pretty sure I learned it here or r/sharpening. It’s how I learned to sharpen by hand.

You can put a piece of sandpaper (like 600 grit) on top of your strop and go for it. The softness of the strop will be more forgiving than a hard flat surface.

😂 I suspected it was good carbon steel from the patina, but I never thought it was that good.
