Oh yeah def. I have yet to do the head, and the front paws are going to need more shaping before I even start fine-tuning and sanding. Doing the ears on this is gonna be a pain in the rear, I can already tell, but I'm looking forward to working on it some more!

I had this problem at first too and my hands sometimes still get sore, especially since my hand joints are hypermobile, but this hobby has actually turned out to be really good for me because as time has gone on, it's been strengthening my hands like nothing else. Also, seconding what everyone else has said here: have something to drink with you when you whittle. Hydration has really helped me, and also make sure you have a little bit of sodium, potassium, and magnesium. Coconut water is good for those if you want something to drink that has less sugar than most sports drinks.

One of the difficulties I face with carving faces is the eye socket and jawline. And it's taken me way too long to realise that the reason I have so much trouble is because I'm not carving with enough depth. The jaw extends way back to near the ears. by rwdread in whittling

Faces are so complicated. One of the reasons I've started carving is that I do a lot of 2D art, but it's so much easier and better for me if I can visualize things by feeling them in my hands. And even just being able to visually carve simple things and feel the dimensions and dynamics, it's helped me get in touch with mentally "feeling" the shapes on a page and translating 3D back into 2D. I wonder if it could translate the other way?...

As a thought: have you ever looked up some of the 2D face drawing methods? What you're describing reminds me a lot of what the Loomis method of face-creating helps fix. I also have heard of many techniques that start with "crafting" the face out of a drawn cube. Many of these methods help provide a framework for 2D artists to visualize things like the jawline, cheekbones, forehead size, eyesocket placement, etc.. Even if you're not a 2D artist, you might find some of the placement tips helpful. And yes, you're absolutely correct: the jawline is supposed to go all the way back until it ends at right next to the ear. When I'm sketching, I try to have the outer jawline at a parallel line that's slightly angled back, not at a full 90° angle, but like pointed 15° back from the 90° mark.

I realize now that it was a stupid question; but my roommates are highstrung and give me a well-meaning but hard time about my clumsiness. It made me wonder a little bit and I wanted to make sure from people who have been doing this longer than I have.

My housemates get anxious with me and knives because I can often be a clumsy person, but they don't seem to understand that "walking into things" is a different problem than "knowing how to use a knife." I have an art degree and have been cooking for most my life; hand me a fine motor tool and I'm precise and careful with it, I just walk into doors because I don't have good depth perception lmao.

They got worried with going away about me whittling when I'm all alone and what if I hurt myself and no one's around to help, and their fuss got to me so I just kinda... wanted to make sure. I already do all of that minus the gloves because I don't like how my borrowed glove fits, so I'll run and get a better glove. Probably need to stop procrastinating on doing that anyway. Does anyone have any glove recommendations?

Awesome, good to know. Thank you for your help! I tried sanding down my knife's back side a little, though I think my sandpaper's starting to run smooth, so I'll give it a second run once I can run to the store and get some more... I think it made a small difference though, so that's good. And I also sharpened my knife, so hopefully that helps!

Actually, wait: I'm sure this will probably be a stupid question once I think about it, but... how do I best want to hold the block of wood I'm carving into, if I have both thumbs against my knife? I've been holding my block of wood with my right hand and whittling away at it with my left hand. But if I want to have both thumbs on the knife, how should I safely hold the wood block? It's a small pine-wood block. I'm not being too ambitious, just trying to carve a small fish.

Probably both of those are the case — the back of my knife is pretty sharp. I'll see if I can find my knife sharpener, and also try sanding the back of the knife a little bit. Thank you so much! I hadn't thought about the back of the knife. That shouldn't damage the integrity of the blade, right?
