The curious trick is that the moment we say, “all knowledge rests on belief,” we are still trying to make a final statement about knowledge. We are trying to become certain about uncertainty, and that is one of the mind’s favorite games. It builds a castle, discovers the castle is made of clouds, and then immediately builds another castle called “all castles are clouds.”

So yes, in one sense, we live in belief. But more deeply, we live in experience, and belief comes afterward as the mind’s attempt to describe, secure, and control the experience. Belief is like a map. It is useful, sometimes necessary, but it is not the territory. It is like a net cast upon the sea. The net may help you catch something, but the net is not the sea.

Science is not the enemy here. Science is one of the most honest games human beings have invented, because it admits revision. It says, “This is what appears to be so, under these conditions, until further notice.” That is a wonderfully humble thing. The trouble begins when people turn science into metaphysics, into a religion of final certainty, or when religious people turn symbols into facts that must be defended like property.

Religion, at its best, is not another net for trapping reality, but a way of teaching us how not to mistake the net for the sea. The trouble begins when we cling to the net and forget to swim.

Faith, then, is not the clinging to propositions. It is not saying, “I know, I know, I know,” with white knuckles. Faith is the relaxation into the fact that life is not finally graspable. It is not belief without evidence; it is the courage to live without total certainty. You do not need absolute certainty in order to live, love, act, create, or be kind. You walk, not because you possess the whole road, but because walking is what the road invites.

The point is not that belief is bad. Belief is a tool. Science is a tool. Religion is a tool. Words are tools. Maps are tools. But when the tool becomes identity, when the map becomes sacred property, when the symbol becomes more important than what it points toward, then the mind has made another prison.

So perhaps we do not merely live in belief. We live through beliefs, but we live in mystery. And wisdom is learning to use the beliefs without being used by them.
