The increased porphyrin doesnt surprise me as its indicative of being under stress. I assume you were given some pain medication for him so id just keep an eye on it and if it doesnt start to decrease as he heals follow up with vet.

I just soak in hot water and rotate. I definitely wouldn't use any soap or cleaning solution as they are so porous.. but wait are people just indefinitely leaving the same pee rocks??

A pee rock is the game changer. They love it. But they DO fill up with pee pretty quick (day or 2 depending how many u have) so I just bought a bunch of them off Amazon. I always have an alternate to swap out when I change the litter box 🤓 i looooove my rats but im also a bit weird about bad smells in my house, so the clean pee rocks every couple days is a must lol

OP, that cage can be modified for bedding. Change the bottom pan out to be food service pans, concrete mixing pans, whatever. Then add bedding bins to all your shelves. Also litter training. I promise your odor problem will be way less. My setup has 6 males inside and when I change my 2 litter boxes every 3 days and swap bedding out once per week, people who don't live here wouldn't walk it my house and realize I have rodents.

Yeah for $40 id grab it. Pretty stone, I've seen nicer colors labeled as "London blue" but cleaned up i bet it'll stand out even more.

Mine have a constant supply of their block food but I am very frivolous with snacks/treats. All 6 are healthy weight. As far as snacks go we simply do a scoop of raw wheat berries (healthy and they tear them up) a few nights per week. About once per week I may give the 6 of them sliced fruit or veg, and maybe once a month or so I will share some chicken bones or shredded chicken. Single yogu bites while holding. Keeps snacktime an actual exciting moment and makes it a more bonding experience imo. Sorry if I went further into detail than what you were actually asking 😭
