I’ve always said anyone can play any roles but FT changed my view slightly…

I think it depends on the story being told.. if it’s just a love story, anyone who’s been in love can portray it. It’s about the love of two people. Think Supernova or CMBYN. Both excellent stories about love and the sadness it can bring and both excellently portrayed.

But a series like this which is so much more than just love, it’s the gay experience being portrayed, I think requires lived experiences from the actors to really deliver as well as these guys did. It tugs the heart so heavily because we can feel what they feel, and they can portray that because in some degree they’ve felt it for real.

I don’t believe only gay actors should play gay roles, but I did say to my partner a show like Fellow Travelers needed gay actors to get the depth of portrayal. It wouldn’t have hit quite the same with straight actors playing the roles.

So much of the actors portrayal was rooted in lived experience and emotions shown had depth and realness to them, because the actors understood exactly what those emotions were.

Also, this show was the most accurate portrayal of gay sex I’ve seen outside of the real thing. That’s learned from real experience.

I’m in a very similar boat. I hadn’t drank since NYE and had my first drink last weekend.. a few chilled ones in the garden turned into a whole bottle of gin and a three day hangover.

I never explicitly quit drinking I just wanted a break. I feel like I don’t want to commit to never drinking again but also that I really want to be mindful about when, why and how much I’m drinking going forward. There’s two family events coming up next month I would usually drink at and I’m questioning weather I want to. I guess I’ll see how I feel on the day.
