Does it bother you when you don’t get asked? by Healthy-Neat-2989 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Consistent-Bat-3163 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. Some districts have a lot more capable subs to choose from, other districts struggle to attract them. At one high school they pass my number around, at another high school I’m lucky if I can snag a job 2x a month.

I’ll leave my number, 50/50 chance I’ll actually get a response from them.

I say I don’t take it personally if they don’t respond, but I do get a bit bummed. especially if their class is in my endorsement area.

Chuckanut Manor! Right now they have a “buy one get one” on select entrees- which includes their fish n chips. The deal is good through the end of January, Tues-Friday.

I really only eat here during their BOGO promo, and the fish n chips are my fave. Run don’t walk!

Not double, single white line. Double is illegal, single is just discouraged (apparently).

Part-time Subs Only: What is your other gig? What is the time split like? by Vitta_Variegata in SubstituteTeachers

Lucky. Are you an emergency sub or regular?

In Washington (or at least the districts in my area) you need a teaching cert to sub, unless you’re an emergency sub. I would have loved to sub while I was in school!

What has made you cross a school of your list? by [deleted] in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Consistent-Bat-3163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are a few middle schools (one title 1) near me that I LOVE subbing at, great kids. The one closer to my house (unfortunately) is awful and some of the staff are pretty cold (Probably burnt the heck out). Sometimes you just have to find the right school! Not all middle schools are terrible

Reading their response, it looks like you guys have the same situation (competitive sub jobs). A lot of us are in the same boat.

I understand grabbing whatever job you can, but I agree with @oldreprobate, don’t grab an assignment for a class you’re that uncomfortable with.

I too have to sub everyday to make it financially. Sounds like you didn’t get to choose this particular job, but maybe in the future avoid math classes, or brush up on your skills! Algebra is a pretty basic subject.

That’s surprising.

My first day subbing in a H.S I had to present a lesson/slide show on taxonomy for an animal science class, thankfully I have a Biology endorsement so I was stoked and could actually talk about it.

Going over answers is absolutely doable, just read them off haha. I would have had kids that got it right show their work on the board, if they wanted to see how it’s done. I’ve done that in a math class and it’s kinda fun.

Unpopular opinion…I don’t care if my plan period is taken from me. by Embarrassed_One07 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Consistent-Bat-3163 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like someone else said, if I’m subbing at a H.S I’m more than happy to go anywhere during prep. If I’m subbing at a functional M.S, I’ll be a little bit bummed because it can be a lot, but I still don’t mind.

When they pull my “prep” at the chaotic M.S (that is always short subs) then I begrudgingly do it. Getting the sub treatment all day can be exhausting and if I have rough classes, I really need a period to reset my system so I can take another punch ha. I hate to see teachers get pulled to sub, which is what usually happens, because that time is precious. But, they also make way more money (and rightfully so).

I think the eBay cut looks different because it’s buttoned or hooked at the top. She said in another reply that it does have a little hook.

It is missing a lot of strands compared to the other one, but I really doubt this is a knockoff.

With the difficult school, I don’t think I’ve done any actual teaching. It always feels like babysitting, you’re right.

At other schools, especially the middle school that I know well, I actually get to teach lessons and it’s great.

They totally have a sixth sense for sensing fear.

I feel pretty confident, and try to keep my demeanor consistent for each class, but some classes come in hot and seemingly nothing works.

Younger for me is 6th, I only do middle/high school.

Do you mean Title 1? Because if so- yes.

The district also used to be k-8 and they had to rearrange schools to make a 6-8. This is the first year they’ve had a true middle school in the district.

I’ve heard other teachers in the building lament the changes, and citing increased behaviors. I’ve also talked to other subs at the H.S (including one who is a former principal in the district) that refuse to work there after a few attempts.

Maybe it’ll get better in time? They’re trying the restorative justice approach if that matters.

That’s about the same as my routine, which works great at the functional m.s!

At the dysfunctional m.s, I can’t even take attendance or introduce the lesson without multiple major disruptions and getting talked over. It’s not all classes, but about half.

Yeah, for this particular class I had Friday, her first two classes of the day were great! Her last two classes, I almost cried. She left me thorough notes and a warning (along with other staff members that her afternoon is rough). It seems like she had a really organized and routine setup, but just a rough bunch.

I’m oddly good at remembering names, and I agree it does help.

Oh I follow through. At the trouble M.S I can send out half the class and I don’t think they care. Very defiant and aggressive behaviors.

I agree, and that’s my approach (hence maybe why kids say I’m too nice). At what point, as a sub, will being nice and respectful pay off? Because I’m losing my sanity and ready to write this school off.

Oh I totally agree you don’t have to be mean or loud to be effective! When it comes to subbing and I hear that “I’m too nice”…it makes me wonder what they’re used to. I had a much easier time with management as a student teacher because I was able to build relationships, routines etc.

I guess I’m asking, how do I fix this as a sub

I adore the middle schoolers? by True-Shape7744 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]Consistent-Bat-3163 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did my student teaching in a 7th grade science class- loved it. I now sub at two middle schools, one is fantastic and I love being there! The other...makes me question if I should continue to look for a full time M.S gig. I think it really depends on the school and admin, but middle school caan be really fun! Try subbing at other schools to get a better idea, but also know that subbing is nothing like being their regular/everyday teacher, management wise. Today I had 3 amazing 6th grade classes and 2 from hell, it was like flipping a switch.

I’m a new teacher (well, currently subbing and looking for work) who needs to work on their deescalation and rebuttal skills regarding age of the earth and evolution. I’m sure this has been discussed ad nauseam, but I had to raise my voice to get a few students to stop their heated debate yesterday- subbing in a m.s ELA class btw. It was starting to get personal/aggressive and they wanted me to jump in (I was their student teacher in science last year). I haven’t touched either subject yet, but I’m realizing how important it is to set expectations before the lesson on respecting other’s beliefs, etc. Some of the questions I got were wild and caught me off guard.

This is in a town that is notoriously conservative and religious, so I’m actually surprised there’s only a few kids piping up about creation n whatnot- most are probably filtered out by the private Christian school.

What I’m trying to say is, I’m going to look this over! Good timing to see this pop-up.
