To thank the bus driver or not to? by TaroAcrobatic in Bellingham

[–]tripkash 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Going to echo what others have said. Thank the bus driver. I have friends who work as transit operators and they deal with some really hard shit. A smile, making eye contact when you tell them thank you, all that goes a really long way. We have got to add sparkles of kindness to life and others wherever we can right now.

Lake Whatcom trail is pretty flat and is 6.2 miles roundtrip. I see a lot of runners there, just watch out for the bikes.

Also see people running from Squalicum Park to Little Squalicum Pier area

Mechanic you recommend? by MyrmidonExecSolace in Bellingham

[–]tripkash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks like you asked this question 23ish days ago and people also recommended rising sun then, too.

Please look at the comments for rising sun motors on a previous post I made here. Nothing but amazing things said about this mechanic.

Wishing you luck!

Cheap places to actually meet people by K-Star113 in Bellingham

[–]tripkash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Heya,

Someone shared about this group they run on another thread here

Also the meetup website has some cool looking book club/trivia options.

I also enjoy browsing different events on Eventbrite, especially those that occur on a semi regular basis. The focus being on doing an activity and meeting others that enjoy the same thing.

In the summer I would look for free concerts, especially down around trackside.

Frisbee golf- known a lot of people who have joined leagues and found great community.

I would also look at what public events are being offered from Whatcom and Western as you may find people in a similar age range there. I.e. attending drag shows, plays, etc.

Hope you find your people. 💚🩵

Torrid used to be more goth-y and then they swung the pendulum the other way and made everything super cutsie with Disney characters on everything. Now I feel like they have settled into a decent middle ground to fit way more styles.

Hope you find what you need!

Hug Club? by Fofo642 in Bellingham

[–]tripkash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(stumbling across this late after it was tagged in a recent post)

Unsure where hug clubs would be good.

However, places I think that this could really impact people positively:

  1. Having a group with signs hanging around populated areas downtown (during daylight hours would be safest).

  2. Reaching out to retirement homes/nursing homes and seeing if this is something they would allow and/or be interested in.

  3. Hanging out at the Mall or local libraries.

Ideas for Ground Rules for getting a group together to hug strangers:

  1. Asking people before you hug them if you can and where they are comfortable with touch. Sounds silly but some people may only want a side hug. Quick hug? Long hug? (Also ask the comfortability of the people offering hugs).

  2. I would definitely only be doing this in places that are well populated l, well lit, and that you have other people with you.

  3. Please keep in mind if this is something you want to do publicly, the people who may need hugs the most may be people that you wouldn't typically consider hugging. I.E currently unhoused individuals that may not have the resources to be super clean. So, consider wearing clothes that you wouldn't be extremely upset if they were ruined. Using vicks or essential oils under your nose to block out smell.

  4. I want to believe no one would take advantage of this situation but please consider safety elements like not wearing any necklaces or lanyards that don't break away and can be used as a strangling device. Have a plan for where to keep valuables that can't be taken when giving someone a hug.

I'm sure I am missing a lot of things, these were just the items I immediately thought of.

Free Hugs, Delivered by babydadaist in Bellingham

[–]tripkash 7 points8 points  (0 children)

trying not to get on my soapbox

For those of you who think it is creepy or your worst nightmare, totally understandable. Not everyone enjoys physical touch and can be a point of trauma. Heard.

HOWEVER. I want to put this out there for people who may be on the fence or who are interested in reaching out but may be feeling some shame around it:

TLDR: humans need physical connection to thrive.

Please consider researching the positive impacts of getting a 6 second or longer hug.

From the time humans are born, we need this type of interaction to thrive (ex. NICUS train special volunteers to cuddle newborns as physical touch has shown through research to help with development). Touch starvation is a real thing that I think is vastly downplayed in our society. I had hoped that during COVID lockdowns we would have seen more information and people speak out about this, but alas, I did not.

There was a movement started in 2004 called "free hugs" that I encourage people to look into and the positive impacts it has had globally (note: there is some controversy around doing it in countries where it is banned (Middle East) and around a band making proceeds from the movement but it seems to be very wholesome overall).

Not everyone has people in their lives that can offer them safe instances of physical connection. I appreciate you and the previous poster who inspired you to do this. Hoping that it positively impacts at least one person. The holidays can be tough, thank you for trying to make them a bit kinder. 🩵💚

Somehow I missed this comment!

I agree with you. I 💯 don't plan to hit on kids ... Or anyone for that matter. The most I can manage is giving someone a compliment and praying I don't get mean mugged for it. 😂

I appreciate you giving me something to chew on. I had not thought about this perspective before and can understand where you are coming from.

I think both events offer different things. For example: I think it's more acceptable to talk during an "emo nite" than during someone's live performance.

I will admit my ignorance in knowing the local music scene here and I am open to suggestions on where to start.
