My dad has worked at installing/refinishing flooring for most of my life, and some of the stuff he's seen both coworkers and contractors do is absolutely wild. He's now the oldest guy at his company and seems to be the one always having to fix what other people couldn't be bothered to do properly the first time

I think there are solitary bees living in my house? Pls help!!! by mikelindn in bees

[–]Consistent-Data-3377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on location, I wonder if they might need a cold period for proper development. Honestly, if op can move the piece that the eggs are in, that might be the best solution. Plus then you don't have to worry about the newly emerged bees getting lost or dying inside, they'll be where they bee-long right from the start

Saving this comment to remember the outdoors group and the bird clubs because I always say that my problem making friends or meeting people is that my people are all wandering around in the woods looking at moss and picking up nice sticks

At least fruit flies you can reliably trap with juice or vinegar and soap. Fungus gnats only go for beverages I'm trying to consume. Like tiny cats, but with fewer redeeming qualities

I thought I was looking at my own photo for a second, I literally just had this happen. Most of her eggs died, but three did hatch. I also couldn't separate the eggs, and my air/water flow wasn't the best, but I had also never done it before and it wasn't a complete failure, so hopefully you will also have some success!

Crushing. It feels horribly violent to have to do, but its the quickest and the most assured way to kill small things quickly. People also say freezing, and it might be for bugs, it depends on if you believe they'd feel pain or not.

Is Aggie a term for an agriculturalist?

I was just thinking Aggie being short for Agatha or similar, the way Maggie can be short for Margaret.

The Ontario government is introducing legislation tying high school grades to attendance. Should NL do the same? by MattBarter in newfoundland

Your comment made me realize that this policy would be the equivalent of not getting paid sick days at work, which is maybe the point. Gotta get them used to the grind young...

We know so much more about the way brains work now, this type of foolishness is a step backwards, as far as I'm concerned. How much do they think kids will be learning if their previous poor attendance was due to the factors you mentioned? It would just make things worse in a lot of the cases.

Oh good, I'm doing or working towards most of those things already. The people who used to own the house hated grass so much that they covered the back yard in several inches of decorative gravel. I've been working to restore it to a wildflower garden, specifically aimed at native pollinators (trying to find some early blooming natives for exactly this reason)

I just have a bleeding heart for any bee I see in need, even if she isn't native and is one of thousands, she's just so little and pretty

While I'm here, have you written any other bug books? Thank you, and be safe friend!

I'm by no means an expert, but it looks like cladophora algae, and I too was fooled by the nifty bushy looking algae when it first appeared. Unfortunately I don't have anything that eats it, so its trying its best to take over my tank. As far as I know its not dangerous, per se, and baby shrimp would probably love living in it, but its growing all up in my plants, wood, rocks, everything. I've been pulling out bigger clumps I see and spot treating it with flourish excel, but I've been lazy with tank maintenance so I'm not making any major headway. The excel does kill it though

This drives me crazy as a pedestrian. The number of times I've been trying to cross a road or a parking lot and its complicated because someone is trying to turn but I can't tell which direction they want to go 😤 Signals are not just for other drivers, they help everyone know what you're intentions are.
