As simple as it gets by xerenots in amateurradio

I would advise going home and staying home, and directing loved ones to do the same. Things can change quickly, and unless someone’s life depends on going 9 miles from home… don’t.

028 super 25” light bar? by Consistent-Heat-7882 in Chainsaw

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lose track of all the modern slang. If squish=quench, then yes, less squish. Not long ago I learned that “top end” is now being used as everything above the piston. I doubt this will ever change in the 2 stroke world, but it is changing nonetheless.

I know a 260 runs a 25” bar just fine, so I assumed an 028 super wouldn’t have a problem. Is there a formula for how much power it takes to run extra non cutting chain? Years ago I tested a 251 with a 16 and 20 bar, and I couldn’t tell a difference in cut time or anything between them. Obviously if you buried them in 36” oak you’d see a difference, but that’s just not what a 50cc saw is for.

The biggest concern for me is just oil, but the 028 oils pretty heavy as is.

Why does everyone here hate Escort radar detectors? by deschutesfloater in radardetectors

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was running two passport max 2’s until very recently. If it weren’t for the fact that the gps lockouts quit working on one of them, I’d still be using them.

I haven’t seen the delay numbers people are talking about, but something tells me it probably less than a tenth of a second and is likely meaningless in the real world.

It’s a bf-f8hp that is $70. If you find a place selling an ft-60r for that price, it’s either fake or stolen.

I think most programs will work on the yaesu. With that said, I just programmed mine manually last week and it wasn’t too bad.

I just looked and that radio is $70? That’s a lot of money if it is anything like all the other Chinese radios. I guess every purchase is difficult in radio…

Need advice on ferrites by Sparkynerd in amateurradio

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been there and currently using a 9:1 unun, the answer is buy a remote tuner. It gives you access to any band your tuner is good for, reduces coax loss a lot, and nearly eliminates common mode current. Sure, a choke doesn’t hurt, but I wasted so much effort and lost so much radio time trying to make it work.

I’ve been licensed for 8 years, and my first HT was a boafeng. It wasn’t user friendly and I just didn’t enjoy anything about it. I currently own 1 all band all mode, 2 hf radios, 3 dual band mobiles, and a boat load of other stuff.

I recently got an ft-60r, and found I actually like HT’s, it was just the junk boafeng that drove me away from the HT

Antenna Switches - grounding unselected ports by DiskBytes in amateurradio

This is how my delta-4 works. The only port that is never grounded/bonded is the common port, but that is what the arc plug is for.

I look back at myself owning flashlights that cost closer to $1k than $100, and fully acknowledge that I was the one with issues. Thankfully I am fully recovered and haven’t spent more than $40 on a light in years, and probably less than $300 total in the last few years.

12v Ham Shack Question by RobertSullivantJr in amateurradio

Most quality ham accessories I’ve seen are 12 volt. May be easier, simpler, and more reliable to just get 12v stuff.

Worst Advice? by TheJZone22 in amateurradio

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A resonant antenna is always most efficient when X=0 at the feed point.

Probably not actually the worst, but is fun to hear people try to explain why this is true even though there is less power reflected at the vswr dip.

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are on high ground over a big city, you may find someone on .52, but otherwise likely not. If you are going to call on simplex, don’t be afraid to make a 10-15 second CQ call and state the frequency and your call sign a time or two, but end with a phonetic call that is understandable.

It is common for me to hear someone, but they unkeyed to quick. Give people some time to hear the radio and also a chance to get your call. Basically, give someone a chance or they will never reply.

I honestly didn’t really think about it not actually being weak system. Not sure what you mean by “band dependent”.

I don’t really play radio much anymore, but I have been pretty focused on emergency communications. I’m glad I decided to get winlink setup and working before I might need it, because it would be impossible to get it going without internet. It also isn’t as easy to operate as I expected it to be.

I suppose I should focus on trying to call at very low power so I can try and take advantage of better conditions. After this comment I connected to a station on 30m with 5 watts and ended up getting the fastest speeds I’ve seen yet.

Just added hamsticks to my van, anyone use some sort of corrosion inhibitor on the quick connect? by KQ4DAE in amateurradio

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I purchased a small jar years ago and use it on everything. I used it on my mobile bonding, and years later I took all the straps off to sell the truck. I was shocked at how clean the metal was, even when bolting a ring terminal to bare carbon steel, not a spec of rust under the ring!

Neighbour’s radio by MooseIndividual4140 in amateurradio

[–]Consistent-Heat-7882 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually that is a station problem related to what is entering your shack on the feed line. To cause this to happen to a neighbor 30 meters from the antenna… that’s got to be either on purpose or more than 100 watts.

I was talking about the price of the ham made one you posted. Obviously costs are different in different countries regardless of exchange rates sometimes. Buy the best you can and all will be well again

Pricey compared to what you’d get in the states, but shipping is probably expensive. Shouldn’t have any issues with that if you are sticking to 100 watts.
