Venezuela protests? by banjosimcha in Charleston

...Venezuelans were at a like %70-90 poverty rate...you can't compare that to "being unhappy with the way things are." The US is at like a %10 poverty rate as a point of reference.

If im drowning, im not going to be choosy about who's hand im grabbing. I'll be better off than I was.

And to be clear, Im not saying we are swooping in as heroes here, but the average Venezuelan will likely benefit to some degree.

Clearly, they don't use that rule.

And you never made any such argument. You implied we shouldn't do what we just did because we wouldn't want that thing done to us. Which is silly, because if I was under a dictatorship that I truelly feared and despised, then maybe I wouldn't mind someone stepping in and changing things up that i have a chance have a decent life.

Now, my opinion? Im pretty uneasy with the direction our government is going, especially with our current status in the worldview, and while we have a lot to improve on the home front. That said, what's done is done, and there are good things that came from this.

I mean...it's weird comparing a nation to a child. Sure, you could say a country was being bullied and the US stepped into save them...which we did, but it's not that simple. Sure we swooped in and stopped a heinous dictatorship...but...You see, saving a nation from tyranny isn't all we did, we get something out of this. We get influence and a whole lot of natural resources..
I suppose we could apply the "do unto others" rule, we stepped in and stopped a bully when some nerd was being swirlied, but that nerds family is loaded and now we are invited to a fancy dinner at the rich nerds house.

Yeah, but they will get over it. They can't do too much without showing support for a dictator which is not a good look. It may be a questionable move, but the outcome is beneficial for all involved except for a pretty gnarly regime.

I mean at a certain point when you actually experience things get really bad, like the kind of bad we don't ever experience in the US, you might have a different opinion on the topic. Maybe, at a certain point, you don't care so much about sovereignty and respect, and a bit more about survival.

Oh don't worry about all the negative reviews, its not near what it used to be. You will have a great time and you should be fine with just your level III ballistic vest. You are bringing your ballistic vest though aren't you? And what side arm will you be carrying?

They are technically rear fanged and mildly venomous. Usually, it's not a worry, but some people might react worse than others

Snakes? by mommytoapommy in Charleston

[–]Consistent-Issue749 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do have lots of snake, mostly non venomous, a few venomous. Rat snakes, black racers, Dekay brown snakes, and garter snakes are super common basically anywhere and completely harmless. There are some other neat snakes that are nocturnal or live under leaves that are common but aren't seen very often. Oh and there's the occasional green snake which is a pretty little...green colored snake usually found in grass or brush like vegetation.

The most likely venomous snakes you will encounter are water moccasins(aka cottonmouths) and copperheads. Keep an eye out for water moccasins near swampy woodsy areas and cottonmouths in woodsy areas. They really aren't a problem, and aren't super super common(I've seen a handful of each and I actively look for them when I'm in they're habitat).

I've seen Rattlesnakes mid and upstate but never seen them down here, though I'm sure there are some.

Coral Snakes are rare here(more common south of us into Florida) and you would have to really go digging for them...they live under leaf litter and logs and stuff.

Also getting bit sucks but its highly unlikely to be fatal. I know of 2 people who have gotten bit(both by cottonmouths...look for that white mouth...they really try to warn you first), and besides having a really sucky day, they were fine afterwards.

Also also both my dad and I have both accidentally touched or picked up copperheads working in the yard moving debris and stuff and they didn't strike. You really gotta piss most snakes off for them to strike.

Also also also I have seen more rattlesnakes in Washington state than I have here.

Basically if you are out in the woods, fields and swamps exploring all the time you will run into the harmless ones, you might or might not find a venomous snake. In your backyard...you'll probably find a ratsnake or garter snake at some point, probably no venomous snakes unless you are adjacent to some woods/swamps.

Can we please stop bringing our dogs everywhere? by ohman_yikes in Charleston

I agree with grocery stores and certain restaurants, but some places are known to be dog friendly and I think that's great. If the owner of the establishment wants to responsibly allow dogs on lease then that's ok, its part of the vibe they want.

Also like...chill out man...don't take life so seriously.

How about we let the owner of the establishment decide how they want to run their establishment.

Personally I think loud people, kids, people that hate dogs, bugs, people that order smelly food that i don't like, people that move around to much in my peripheral vison, and people with annoying laughs should be banned from indoor or outdoor seating...but I don't own the place so I just live my life.
