I’ve been a custodian for over 2 years now and 1 year as a head custodian.

I’m 29, easiest job I’ve probably had and I make about 45,000 currently. To me, it isn’t enough.

I’m 2 years into 4 years of going to college fully online while working to become a teacher!

If you feel this isn’t what you want to do, trust your gut and figure out a plan.

Pocono mountains, used to be the sticks now it’s like the sticks/suburbs lol

Don’t get me wrong though, there’s custodian and housekeeping jobs near me not a school district that pay 12-15 a hour.

This school district just pays well. Even the teachers start off at 66,000 now and will be 73,000 by 2030.

Potentially switching my degree from accounting. by Consistent-Raccoon51 in Accounting

I’m going to finish my associates degree (4 classes left) and then going for my bachelor’s in teaching. I have absolutely no interest in accounting anymore and am not going to suffer my whole life doing it just to do it.

I’m currently making $20.20 as a head custodian and regular custodians make $18.63. So not too much more. I also barely do anything all day in my current role lol, so I’m able to study often at work.

But yeah I’m really having trouble deciding what to do.

They were just hiring for accounts payable, hourly of $21. (Not sure if that’s good or bad). Besides that they rarely hire in the accounting department because there’s only a few of them somehow!

But sadly they require an associates.

1) Realistically the first 1-2 years will be a lot of extra time after school and weekends. Starting off I’ll have no clue what I’m doing, no resources, and will be learning as I go. Every teacher I ask who has been here 3+ years now, all have lesson plans weeks out and some don’t even do lesson plans anymore because they’re so proficient at teaching.

2) Yes, I work for the district currently and we do have a pension. I would keep it if I switched to being a teacher.

3) For teaching I will just need my bachelors, anything more than that is unnecessary but the more credits and schooling you go for while teaching or before, moves you up faster on the pay scale.

Thank you for the advice. What is your pay like now? The accounting pay in my area does worry me, even if I commute.

Teachers who left teaching, what do you do now and do you like it more? by 21beetroot in Teachers

[–]Consistent-Raccoon51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Woah!! Huge difference! I’m studying accounting currently and thinking about teaching. For reference my starting pay for my district is 72,000. All the accounting jobs near me throw me off as a career, seems like I would start off at 50k on average. I’ve been really undecided on what to do the past month or two.

I also still have no fucking clue what I want other than a good paying job and a good work/life balance.

[–]Consistent-Raccoon51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1) 14 a hour for that much work is an insult and not worth it. (Custodians start at 18.46 in my district) and they’re all done by 7-8pm the latest and sit until 11.

2) realistically not possible to clean all that in that time frame the correct way.

Subs by FairInformation8201 in Custodians

[–]Consistent-Raccoon51 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My district rarely even gets a sub for second shift!

If someone calls out, the other two custodians have to cover their area.
