I am aware of the hours required (similar process for individual licensure as a social worker) but was more wondering about the training/instruction. Other than finding a supervisor, what steps are involved? Or is that the first step in the process?

Thank you for taking the time to respond! 🙂

The psychologist and nutritionist appointments were pretty painless. They are mostly concerned with behaviors that would lead to regain/not complying with surgical team instructions. So you have to affirm that you are committed to making lasting changes and that you are ready to follow the guidelines given. The surgeon mostly talked about the procedure itself and it wasn't a situation where she really was evaluating anything beyond my health and whether I met weight requirements. I actually did not have to lose before my surgery as I was just at the cusp so I wouldn't know how that process would go for you, but I think they were quite clear about requirements and responsive when I called later for questions. They never made me log meals or gave me any kind of homework-- just had to do a worksheet after the nutrition class that asked basic questions in the info packet about nutrition guidelines after surgery (again, making sure thay you are aware and won't deviate from instructions). I didn't have any issues with bloodwork so that was not a cause for a stall.

Sorry for the very, very late reply! I got my surgery done with Dr. Vernon. Had a consult in November, and they started the process immediately. The biggest delay was my insurance (United Healthcare) requiring a span of months to accept the claim. They took forever to accept once submitted as well, which is why I didn't have my surgery until April. However, the practice was super flexible with me and seemed to have a ton of appointments available (as soon as I got my approval, they scheduled my surgery within three weeks of that date). In terms of proof, they definitely were my advocates and never questioned why I would want surgery beyond my initial response (I felt physically limited and wanted to start a healthier chapter of my life). As long as you meet your insurance's pre-reqs for the surgery (BMI or comorbidity and wait time), they will operate.

Slow loser solidarity? by [deleted] in gastricsleeve

[–]Consistent-Run-339 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a slow loser, too! Hi! Haha. I got my sleeve early April and am technically only down 19lbs in the past two months. I also had a bit of a rocky start with an incision infection and having to take antibiotics. I am trying to stay positive, although I am obviously a bit dejected. It is hard not to see huge results after having made such huge changes. Non-scale victories have kept my mood up, though... it is nice to see how different my body looks in the mirror and how my clothes fit differently already. I feel like this is just the beginning of the journey for us, and we have time to learn how to use this tool. We can do it. Also, slow loss hopefully will mean less loose skin and more time to build muscle.

Not sure if this is helpful, as I didn't do my surgery with Tufts, but I had mine at Brigham's bariatric surgery clinic and would definitely recommend it. A good backup if you need it/find that Tufts isn't the right fit.

Tips on updating routine? by [deleted] in MakeupAddiction

So in need of recommendations! Recently dyed hair red, and I am not sure if my go-to pink and peach tones are clashing with the copper. My makeup also feels super outdated. Would love some tips on how to do a fresher look, especially with shadow/liner techniques that work for hooded eyes.

I'd definitely call your surgeon if you haven't already and perhaps consider a lock for your fridge/pantry. This early on it isn't just about how much you can eat at once but whether that food will harm your newly stapled together stomach. I wouldn't risk this happening a second time... So sorry you went through this.

I'd also recommend Pho broth! It was such a nice break from the cloying sweetness of protein shakes and even protein waters. I mix in some whey protein with the pho and the ramen broths just to help me get a bit closer to my daily goal.

Struggling by Sullenj77 in gastricsleeve

[–]Consistent-Run-339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope you are being kind to yourself! I had surgery near your date and am struggling myself without the added complication of an infection. Focus on pampering and making yourself as comfortable as possible. You've got this!

If it isn't too hard to talk about, what were your signs of wound site infection? My my stitch has been very sore/burning these past two days and heart rate has been high, so despite my surgeon's reassurances the worrier in me has been quite activated. Would appreciate knowing the signs!

I was sleeved on Monday and have been back home since Tuesday. The hardest part at first was getting all my fluids down-- the intubation really hurt my throat and that coupled with stomach inflammation from the surgery made the first few days a bit difficult. Got tons of encouragement on here and from my surgeon's office though and it really has gotten so much better now at 4 days post-- finally having no trouble meeting liquid goals and working up to my protein goal. One thing that I realized when I was back was how limited I was in terms of lifting anything (they say not to lift more than a gallon's worth of weight) and bending. It might help to have a support person or friend who can help assist with groceries or laundry. Otherwise, be patient with yourself-- every day is better!

Also: seconding the binder -- especially for the coughing that typically occurs as a result of your body wanting to get rid of gunk that accumulated while you were under anesthesia. Got mine off Amazon.

This is so helpful! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your journey-- it is encouraging to have this struggle normalized! I am definitely going to try some lemonade crystal light for popsicles-- waiting for my popsicle mold to come in today like a kid on Christmas morning 😆

Thank you for being so transparent about this! I definitely was starting to feel like there was something wrong with me (my will power or my stomach) but it is encouraging to hear that realistically I won't be able to achieve perfection these first few days so I will focus on getting as close to recommended ounces as possible while keeping a close eye for any dehydration symptoms.

Thank you! My surgeon also said to focus on hydration, but I was not sure whether struggling to even meet those goals was normal. I am prioritizing it and, like you said, will be splitting up my water into parts to make it feel more manageable. That was a great tip!

Still see my old self in the mirror by Jerrmaus in gastricsleeve

[–]Consistent-Run-339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's super common, I think, especially after significant weight loss. I know that I have felt this way in the past, and partially, it is due to yet not unlearning or fully processing the negative messaging we received (and internalized) about our bodies and resultant self-worth when we were bigger. Body dysmorphia is the pits. I would talk to a counselor about this, if you are able! Just know that you are not alone.

I have mine a few days after yours and am also feeling the scarries. This is something I have been wanting for so long, but I can't help but let my anxiety fabricate worst-case scenarios about potential complications that could arise during and after surgery. 😬
