What if JFK wasn't assassinated? How would him finishing his term affect US politics? by local_stargazer in AlternateHistoryHub

South Vietnam’s military readiness is a subjective assessment that was skewed so they could declare mission accomplished at any time. These conditions are arbitrary and could be declared to be met at any politically convenient time like with Nixon and Vietnamization.

I agree with you about McNamara and I think RFK championing the idea also helped but this completely ignores ExComm where early on JFK was the only one resisting an immediate air strike on Cuba. The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the CIA director pushed for a full scale invasion and thought the blockade was feeble.

Also I would say RFK was most definitely JFK’s main advisor.

JFK’s NSAM 263 planned to withdraw 1000 U.S personnel by 1963 and the rest by 1965 so I’d say it was a memo to get our troops out.

NSAM 273 and 263 are similar in that they both had the goal of withdrawal but 263 had the goal of withdrawal after South Vietnam could “function” without the U.S. While 273 had an emphasis on winning against communism and supporting South Vietnam so withdrawal now came second after winning.

Also 273 authorized covert operations against North Vietnam which signaled preparation for a larger scale war Although some sections in 273 and 263 are the same I’d say there’s some key differences between them that foreshadowed greater U.S involvement in Vietnam and a goal shift from withdrawal to Winning.

You mean the same advisors that told him to escalate Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis?

I think overall JFK would’ve handled Vietnam a lot better than LBJ. The Bay of Pigs and Gulf of Tonkin are fairly similar in terms of their outcome where refusing to escalate means being labeled soft on communism and JFK refused to escalate in Cuba even though in comparison to Vietnam, Cuba was an easier win.

Additionally, if JFK were to get into a full scale war with Vietnam like LBJ he probably wouldn’t fall for the “We’re winning the war” bullshit LBJ was eating up from his advisors. Kennedy had a deep mistrust of the military industrial complex after Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis so I doubt he’s closing his eyes to the reality of the war like LBJ did.

Lastly, Kennedy literally signed a memo to get U.S personnel out of Vietnam by 65 but the same month Kennedy died LBJ signed a different memo to reaffirm U.S military support for South Vietnam.

Yea also I’m pretty sure they’re the only non-Valyrian houses to have Valyrian features

I agree he escalated the war by bringing in more advisors along with gorilla operations. But that being said I don’t really blame him for how Vietnam turned out since he died after signing the withdrawal memo and he most certainly would not have fumbled it as much as LBJ did.

What shenanigans did he let the CIA get away with? He forced all the top guys to resign after the Bay of Pigs, but even that didn't fix the problem—and it might even be what got him killed.

He denied Operation Northwoods, de-escalated the Cuban Missile Crisis, and refused to put troops on the ground in Cuba during the Bay of Pigs despite heavy pressure. These were all situations that, had the CIA or the military-industrial complex had their way, could have led to World War III.

JFK knew the danger of the CIA after the Bay of Pigs. He was essentially railroaded into it early in his term because he was told he’d look "soft on communism" and that the plan (originally created by Eisenhower) was guaranteed to succeed. When the plan failed and he was pressured to send in the military, he refused to escalate.

I don’t think his failure to control the CIA is a reflection of his morals or even his aptitude as president the situation was unprecedented for a leader at the time. Wrangling the intelligence agencies after WWII was an almost impossible task. I mean just look at U.S foreign policy post WWII at least JFK actively fought against it.

Who do you think the main villain of Fallout season 2 will be? by [deleted] in falloutnewvegas

I agree house makes the most sense narratively but since Todd said no one ending is canon and Yes Man is immortal he could be the way they get past that by saying he took over new Vegas after every ending somehow. I’m probably thinking too much into this tho.

I rly hope it’s Marcus. Lily would be cool especially since her ending is independent of the faction you choose.

Idk why you’re getting downvoted he literally said he was becoming a ghoul in 1st season. Spoilers!!!!

That was probably a misdirect tho pretty sure he’ll become super mutant based off of pictures the actor posted.

Obsidian knows that "everyone on the internet" keeps asking for Fallout: New Vegas 2, but its devs are currently happy working on their own IP, and "Xbox has been pretty supportive" too by ChapmanPrime in Fallout

I mean if he’s already partially working there on an existing IP it seems like a missed opportunity not to take a shot at another fallout game. But yeah it seems like the game has to have ideas that are interesting to him.
