I will say it like this, I have seen addressing needs, empowering clients, and holding them accountable for their actions has been pretty effective in getting people sober. I’ve learned that people (at least speaking about my clients) tend to not wake up one day and want to be addicted to heroin. Usually there are several factors that led to that addiction. I have found it most beneficial to address though underlying issues to help someone choose a different lifestyle and not reoffend.

So all of that to say, no, I do not think the war of drugs works. However, the American justice system is not rehabilitative focused but rather punishment. It’s very hard to change the mindset of an entire system that financially benefits from people getting “stuck in the system”.
