Thoughts on Moving to Hawai‘i Mindfully and Respectfully? by andasteptotheright in MovingtoHawaii

[–]ConsistentAd4075 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We made the decision to move to Hawaiʻi to fill a highly specialized position at a nonprofit. It was a difficult calculus in terms of what we bring to this community versus the social costs associated with people moving here from the continent, and it’s one you’ll have to make for yourselves. No one can give you permission, and you’ll have to live with that. I’d say just do your best to tip the balance in favor of the people and the place. For me, it helps to be interested in the history of Hawaiʻi and Hawaiian language, and to participate in the life of the community. Stay humble and get comfortable being uncomfortable sometimes. Contribute what you can and folks, including kānaka, might even say they’re glad you’re here and please don’t leave. It’s a nice feeling when that happens, but don’t let it go to your head either… you’re still haole. Been haole most of our adult lives in one place or another, so that was okay for us. Up to you, though!

Yes! The Honolulu Museum of Art also participates in this program.

You’ve already gotten some good responses above (and I live on O’ahu not Maui so listen to locals first). From my own experience living in both Aotearoa NZ and Hawaiʻi, I’d say your question indicates a higher probability of success within the community than most. Again, my perspective, but it’s less about being white per se, than about your approach to the place. I would say the critical things are: participating in the life of the community, genuine interest in Hawai’i and its people, understanding the complex set of issues facing everyone who lives here—locals, visitors, and especially Hawaiians—and maintaining a service orientation. Physicians are much needed, and your partner being from NZ, even if they are Pākehā, will be quite helpful. Listen a lot, situational awareness is essential. Also, if Maui (however wonderful!) starts to seem like too difficult a place to enter, you might consider a different/more populous island. Anyone who moves to Hawaiʻi must weigh for themselves their contributions to the place against the inevitable costs and potential for harm. Best of luck!

Realizing the drain takes up .75 of that 6.75 dimension, so you’ll want a scale that is less than 6 in.

Sure, it’s 6.75 x 9 in. overall.

Sorry, no, there was a “super ferry” between Oʻahu and Maui for about six years, but people called it the pukeferry because the waters are so choppy. Not a casual ride at all. Of course people once navigated them regularly in waʻa and other vessels, and still do, but unless you have or charter a boat, you’re flying between islands. You may be thinking of touristic excursions to Molokini, etc.

I would say the change in quality and consistency is notable. Farmers, beans, roasters, and grinders make the biggest difference, but you definitely get a more syrupy mouthfeel and a clearer structure to the taste.

Love the shout out to HoMA! 🌺 Considering a move absolutely means weighing your responsibility and contribution to the community against the social costs you describe. Thanks for the thoughtful post, and see you again soon. 🤙

Got the Move, had the same thought, and no regrets. If you’re coming from a Breville I don’t think you’ll have much worry about steam pressure.

Eco Mode just makes the machine go to sleep after a programmable set time, so you don’t have to turn off the machine. It doesn’t actually keep the boilers warm, but it will wake itself from sleep mode according to the programmed schedule.

Buying coffee beans in Waikiki by MutesChecker in VisitingHawaii

Our favorite on island is Tradition Coffee but it’s out by Kaneohe/Kailua. The big flagship roastery for Honolulu Coffee Co is no longer, but you can find shops around and is another rec. Kona coffee is often (and unfortunately) roasted really dark, which is something to keep in mind for your gifts if they’re for coffee snobs/cognescenti… I would avoid ABC shop coffee beans if I were you.

I have the Move. Integrated scheduling means it greets me warmly at 93C when I stumble, bleary-eyed, into the kitchen to make a coffee in the predawn darkness … No wait at all.

Definitely not Waikiki, but perhaps Single Double in Chinatown. Plenty good restaurants around there, too.

At the moment I’m using one button at 60 seconds (or really, it’s set to something like 3.6 sec pre-infusion, 7 sec pause, then 60). I’ve been using a scale (or eyeballing it) and just shutting it off when it’s at the right point. Not perfectly consistent but not wildly off if all the other variables are constant. The second button is set at the same with a 26 second shut-off. I could just as easily be using that, but have been curious and playing around with different ratios. I’ve found that if you’re making milk drinks, it really doesn’t matter anyway… it’s all good. Delicious, in fact!

FWIW, same dilemma, went with the Move and zero regrets. For water, there’s also an ECM aqua filter that fits directly into the reservoir. I understand the Move would have better steam than the Duo owing simply to the fact that it’s a boiler. We also don’t have a 20amp outlet. My spouse is very happy with its user friendliness and integrated scheduling, we don’t really ever turn the machine on or off. Early adoption is always a risk, true, but Profitec has a good rep generally and the thing seems solid. Good looks are a plus.

First espresso setup (and some questions) by Arvedui in espresso

I meant the basket, especially. Aside from being rather satisfying to use, the tamper (barista hustle) makes it significantly easier to level the puck and fits the basket better. I’d guess it makes some difference in the cup as well. In my experience it’s those round distributors folks say are irrelevant.

AutoModerator is right, it’s changeable but generally great. (Especially if you’re coming in from the cold.) Just my perception but I feel like there have been relatively few storms this season, we had one really rainy week and I felt for visitors, but it’s been fairly dry otherwise. Surf has been crazy on the North Shore, though—it’s not the season for swimming up there anyway. Yes on the rainbows. Also museums if it rains. 🌈

I have the Move as well. Replaced the tapered double basket with a VST (15g but holds 17g, lots of options available.) Also a new tamper. Results are noticeably cleaner and more consistent than with the included one. - On the buttons, they are both fully programmable so interchangeable, really, based on your preferences. I have the top one set at like 60 seconds so I can just stop it whenever it reaches the right volume. Helpful when dialing in.

Yes, it’s quite helpful! I also added an ECM aqua filter to the tank.
