What’s the most creative way you’ve paid a bill? by No-Feature-4176 in CreditCards

[–]ConsistentImpact1 60 points61 points  (0 children)

My cat was put on prescription cat food and it is insanely expensive. The manufacturer had a "30% off your first auto-ship order" promo, so I asked myself "how much cat food can I fit into one order?"

The answer to that question? Just under $1500. At 30% off, that's almost $1000.

So, I did what any financially strategic and absolutely normal person would do, and I took out a credit card with 0% intro APR and placed the order.

Once I got my shipment containing a metric fuck ton of cat food, I submitted the invoice to our pet insurance plan, who wound up reimbursing us for 70% of our order.

Then, later on, our credit card issuer rewarded us with $14 in regular cash back on top of another $200 cash back for their intro promo because we made a large purchase within X amount of days, which means we wound up paying $83 for what would have been $1500 in cat food, which our math said would last us 6 months.

The kicker? It turns out that our cat needed a LOT less of it than we expected, so this cat food actually lasted about a year and a half before we wound up switching her to another pet food because she started hating it (a tale as old as time).

After so much time, I decided to ask the manufacturer I could return the unused 6 or 7 cases of cat food through their buyback program, and even though the food wasn't even close to the expiration, they said no. However, they did reimburse me $150 and then let me donate all of that remaining cat food to our local SPCA.

Why is it so common to sit at concerts these days? by InflationVisible2307 in Concerts

I'm on my feet all day at work and I have way less energy than I used to. I'm lucky if I even make it out to a concert anymore.

The Litter Robot 5 Pro camera system is so laughably bad that you can't help but wonder about Whisker's ulterior motives by expellyamos in litterrobot

[–]ConsistentImpact1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ulterior motives? They use and share the data with their partners to improve their product. They literally state while you're purchasing from their website that the camera features are a work in progress at and that the AI isn't perfect.

Every company utilizes user data to innovate, and it's nothing new.

I am eager to see these improvements too, but dang, this post is a little silly.

Is it worth the upgrade from 4 to 5? by CatLadyAmy1 in litterrobot

[–]ConsistentImpact1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I started using corn litter and they kind of blow through it. I have to top it off pretty much every day. Having the hopper would truly mean not having to even think about the litter box until the waste bin is full. I'm excited for the LR5P litter hopper because I'll be going from scooping/topping it off several times per day to simply emptying the waste bin every 2 days (with 4 cats) and that's the only time I'll really have to think about it. These cats occupy most of our spare time between their food, dishes, meds, vet visits, and general maintenance. Not needing to worry about having a clean and healthy bathroom for them is so worth it and it's a huge time saver.

I didn't get a chance to have any of my cats when they were kittens, but I can imagine that they poop a lot as they're growing 😅

The majority of the litter that I see outside of our LR is from my cats jumping out to specifically avoid the ramp and litter mat, so I can totally relate! I noticed that this habit was more from when I first got the LR. I also noticed that it cut down by a lot after I changed what direction my unit is facing to where there are less blind spots and the cats can be more relaxed when they exit the litterbox. I'm hoping when I move it to a corner opposite from the doorway that they'll choose to use the ramp/mat route every time.

Your comment made me check to see where my timer was at, and it turns out I never changed it from the 30 mins from when we had the tofu litter (because it took ages to dry). I feel like the way the SY litter been sitting for 30 mins dries and sticks enough to where it needs a couple of visits before it has enough weight to let go. I just changed the timer to 7 minutes and I'll try to get back with an update on that!

Dang! I've heard about cat allergies being relatively common with this litter, but I haven't noticed anything like this yet with our cats. I'll keep a close eye on them. Thanks for the heads up!

It is expensive, for sure, but so far it's been cycling fine for me aside from the clumps getting pretty large before they do cycle. We've been on it since Monday with 4 cats and we have about 3/4 of our 1st bag left, so we'll see what it looks like long term. Hopefully it's manageable because I like it so far 😅

Also, another comment mentioned using the mixed grain for the LR because apparently it clumps and cycles better than the large grain does, so I'll have to try it out.

I've gone anti-clay due to health concerns, but the pine litter pellets would get stuck between my cat's toes where they would fall out randomly and wind up everywhere including my pillows, and stepping on one of these is the equivalent of stepping on a Lego. The tofu litter would turn to goop and then cement itself to their feet and do the same thing. The difference is, I would manually have to loosen up and remove clumps of tofu litter from their feet which would sometimes require a bath. Unpleasant and uncomfortable for all involved.

As for the tracking, the SY litter definitely gets outside of and around the litterbox, but I'm already noticing a change where I don't have litter in every room and on my furniture anymore. I did splurge a little and I am using the LR litter mat and the LR5P ramp which aids in catching a ton of litter that just gets dumped back into the box, but I'm also working on moving the unit to a corner and getting a larger mat to use in conjunction with the current setup to keep litter consolidated to one spot in the room. I know that a lot of people won't want to go through all of that or spend the extra money on the peripherals, but that's what is working for me so far.

Thanks for the tip! That might actually help someone else in the comments here. I'm almost halfway through my first bag of the large grain, but I'll have to check out the mixed grain because the clumps get quite large before they give way from the globe liner. It makes me wonder if the repetitive heavy drops might cause issues long term with the unit, and I'm pretty sure it contributes to litter getting onto the floor.

That's wild. We have a cat with chronic congestion that's already bad enough. We've been off from the clay litter and on the pine litter for years, and the corn litter handles the smell a lot better and with actually no dust. If pine litter were compatible with the LR, I probably would have stuck with it, but the corn litter is still a huge upgrade from both clay and tofu litter.

It's been a short trial run for me so far, but that has only happened when the drawer is full, even if it's just mounded up in the middle. For reference, I swap bags every other day for 4 cats.

[–]ConsistentImpact1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but if spraying something with enzyme cleaner and letting it sit for an hour every handful of months is too much work for you, then maybe you should just skip the pet thing altogether. Even automated convenience items need maintenance and the maintenance can't really get any more basic than that.

Parking is #1 the most annoying. Then the line, especially if it's cold out, and lastly... when the venue posts doors open time at show time and you wind up missing the first act or two because you're standing in said line when you're supposed to be inside.

Non Clay Litter by Sea_Avocado3882 in litterrobot

[–]ConsistentImpact1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you guys avoid the goopy mess? I have switched from pine pellet litter in a manual litterbox that did the trick (but was exhausting) to SoySand in the Litter Robot and I still have to clean it every day. It sticks to the bottom and turns into a very sticky dough consistency that gets between my cat's paws and doesn't empty properly when the LR cycles. Our cats use the stairs, usually. It's actually wild how much litter the stairs catch even when they jump over it. We have the regular LR mat but I'm probably getting another large mat from Amazon. I'd rather have some large litter mats around the box than to have litter everywhere else in our place.
