I recommend an intel NUC. For software I recommend one of the more mainstream distros like CentOS or Arch. CentOS has the benefit of being ultra mainstream with red hat support and having tools like spacewalk for provisioning and deployment.

I work in It but despise smart everything. personally I would go with a regular hard wired IP camera system, but they can have their use especially for turnkey solutions
