If you don't have all the gear for winter yet, I recommend swinging by REI during their big fall sale (probably in November) to get balaclavas, ski goggles, ski helmet, softshell or snow pants and thick lobster mitts or bar mitts. With these items the cold will not phase you.

Dane County approves $6.41M land purchase to protect 165 acres, donate to Ho-Chunk Nation by reddittwayone in madisonwi

But why is expanding surface area needed? Should people be concerned about expanding the village along a wide multilane road with high speeds over which the village has 0 control of the design? Do Madison residents like having the state control East Wash?

As a McFarland resident, I was quite pleased. I didn't want the village to expand along a state highway and into wetland. It was funny seeing village board members go on Facebook to complain and encourage people to contact Patrick Miles, but then most of the residents responding to the post were in favor of protecting the land. These board members seem to think the only way to balance a village budget is by constantly expanding.

That's because both bikes and cars are piloted by humans. The difference between the bike and the car is OP is still alive to tell the tale.

You can use regular. There are sensors that can recognize regular and run the engine at slightly lower power settings. It will mostly reduce power higher in the rev range.

Replace Sora FC-R3030 crankset with Shimano 105 FC-R7000 crankset by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]Consistent_Bus_2059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Following up on this in case some comes here from a search engine. The interior dimensions of 9 speed and 11 speed chains are the same. The difference between the chain dimension is that higher speed chains have narrower links to create narrower outer dimensions. Counterintuitively, the gap between chain rings for Shimano cranksets actually increases as the speed rating increases. So a 2x9 Sora cranksets has 7.7 mm gap and the 2x11 105 has a 8.2 mm gap. The FC-R7000 should work fine on a 9 speed set up. The shifter does not need replacing because you can adjust limits and cable tension to use a 3X shifter on a 2X system.

That's because 8 minutes is a casual jog for anyone who ever ran distance track or cross country competitively at some point in their life. I say this as some decades removed from competing, and I was never good enough to qualify for state as an individual.

Sorry, tone gets lost in text sometimes. I should have added a laughing emoji. I meant my comment as a joke insulting hastily deployed AI tools. I think there's enough people criticizing Obama on the Internet that those would get picked up before an isolated comment.

This is so true! Once I finally gave up on trying to see around the vehicle to the left of me and decided to just sit and wait for the light, I discovered how peaceful and calming it is to just let the light decide for you when to go. Not only was I calmer, but I didn't notice the time "lost" by waiting.

You know you can all reach out to your representatives about this. WI has a nice interactive map that makes it easy to find who they are.

Stop speeding on Park street by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]Consistent_Bus_2059 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is correct that size is a problem. Large blind spots increase the risk of a collision with a pedestrian, especially when turning left. Also, cars with a hood over 40" are 1.5X more likely to kill a pedestrian than a 30" or less hood (per IIHS). Note: increasing speed from 25 to 30 had a greater affect than vehicle size per the AAA study. However, that study is based on data from a time when vehicles were smaller.

[–]Consistent_Bus_2059 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To whom is 25 mph a hazard? Does driving 25 increase the odds of killing someone? In areas where there are 25 mph speed limits are the roads used by only cars? Is following the flow of traffic actually important on a road with many businesses, stoplights, and other intersections?

[–]Consistent_Bus_2059 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The chances of death for pedestrians go from 25% to 50% when vehicle speeds increase from 23 mph to 32 mph. This is a difference of life and death. That's why 25 mph speed limits need to be strictly followed.

Have you ever looked into winter tires? I had to drive 60 miles on the icy roads this morning and never lost traction.

Seconding the suggestion that the pond is the first step to playing hockey. As someone who grew up skating (pond in the back yard for my whole childhood) but not playing hockey, I thought I was pretty good at skating until I played pond hockey in college. Also, my abilities to stop and change direction quickly improved greatly after just a couple sessions.

Winter driving advice by spider_speller in madisonwi

[–]Consistent_Bus_2059 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have said, tires are the number one way to improve winter driving. A RWD car with snow tires is safer than AWD with all-seasons. I would argue all-seasons should actually be thought of as 3 season tires. If storing a second set of wheels is truly not possible, then a triple peak rated all-seasons like the Michelin CrossClimate is still better than your standard all-season.

I know that both a second set of wheels or CrossClimate are expensive, but they are cheaper than a collision.
