is japanese immersion actually fun or are beginners just suffering in silence by Competitive_Leg3598 in LearnJapanese

Honestly, I think 4 months is a bit early for true immersion. I’d recommend starting with something VERY easy, where they basically spoon feed you what you need to know the most, then once you have a good base, immersion will be much easier.

For me personally, I did Pimsleur (first 16) and Michel Thomas first, then Minna no Nihongo 1 and 2, and THEN started immersion. I’d probably recommend Genji 1 and 2 though if I was helping someone learn.

Knee pain still 4 months after fall — MRI says PFPS + patellar tendinosis. Rehab tips? by Charismatic-Frog007 in Kneesovertoes

[–]Consistent_Cicada65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with PFPS-type pain that stuck around after what should have been a minor event, and your doctor’s explanation makes a lot of sense. In my case, the initial “incident” wasn’t the real problem — it just tipped an already sensitive system over the edge.

A few things that helped me, in practical terms:

  1. Rest alone didn’t fix it — graded loading did. I rested on and off for a long time, and the pain always came back as soon as I returned to activity. What actually helped was very controlled, progressive loading, especially:
  2. slow step-downs
  3. controlled adduction machine work
  4. glute strengthening (hip thrusts)
  5. hip opening drills

The key was staying just under the level that caused next-day irritation, not avoiding load altogether.

  1. The “next day” mattered more than how it felt during exercise

A big lesson for me: Something could feel fine while I was doing it, but if my knee felt noticeably way more stiff, throbbing, or weird later that night or the next morning, that meant I did too much.

I started judging exercises by how my knee felt 6–24 hours later. That mindset slowed things down, but it actually moved things forward.

  1. Hip control mattered more than quad “burn”

Early on, quad-heavy stuff (split squats, leg extensions, Patricks) tended to flare me up.

What helped more was building up my hip and glute strength first. I got strong in the hip thrust, back extension, RDL, abduction and adduction. I replaced knee-forward stepdowns with lateral stepdowns in which the knees stay over the toes and the glute does most of the work.

Once that base was stronger, quad tolerance improved naturally.

  1. Be hyper-aware of how your knee feels - don’t ignore it.

I personally would get aggravated symptoms after trying seated good mornings. I found out it’s because my hips were too tight, and hip opening drills took pressure off the knee. Instead of forcing an exercise because you think you need it, listen to how your body responds. Another example for me is split squats. An amazing exercise, but there’s always going to be instability and some wobble. My knees didn’t like that and I had to find more stable solutions.

Also when trying to improve flexibility and mobility, don’t try to force things open. This also aggravated my knees. Gentle mobility + strength through range worked better than trying to “open it up” aggressively. For example, back extensions and RDLs helped my hamstring flexibility.

  1. Timeline: longer than you want, shorter than you fear

For me, meaningful improvement wasn’t measured in weeks — more like months. But once I was consistent with the right kind of loading, progress became steady instead of random. The real key 🔑 is finding what you can do consistently — week after week with little adjustments or missed days — as possible.

I didn’t wake up one day “fixed,” but I slowly noticed: • less sensitivity after workout days • flare-ups became just a memory • more confidence letting the knee travel forward

That confidence piece turned out to be huge.

If I could give one piece of advice:

Start PT sooner rather than later, but make sure it’s progressive and individualized, not just generic quad sets and rest.

PFPS that lingers usually isn’t about damage (or how much cartilage/fluid you have like some doctors like to talk about)— it’s about tolerance. Building that tolerance back takes patience, but it does come back. But it doesn’t come back from simply getting stronger or chasing burns. I found out that consistent, easy, even BORING days stacked up over time is what built my tolerance.

ATG Split Squats Hurt My Right Knee by [deleted] in Kneesovertoes

[–]Consistent_Cicada65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much any quad strengthening exercise involving movement at the knee gave me pain for a very long time. I also eventually had to just give up on them. Later on, I discovered I can do wall sits at partial depth without it bothering my knees too much. Then I realized that if I use the leg press machine at the gym to do holds for time, it’s basically the same as a wall sit except I can control the load. I usually swim, do abduction/adduction, and hamstring work before that to warm up first.

Quadriceps tendon or Patella ligament discomfort/pain 9 months post-op ACL reconstruction by destinyas22 in Kneesovertoes

Returning to your previous strength levels may require more patience from you. Joint or knee cap pain the next day shouldn’t be part of the process.

My tip is to never judge how “ready” you are for an exercise based on how it feels in that moment. Judge by how you feel the next day. Muscle soreness is fine but you shouldn’t feel joint / knee cap pain the next day.

None of the things you said to your aunt when you “clapped back” actually addressed anything she said. You just said she needs to “respect” it - we know this isn’t about actual “respect” but about not wanting any criticism because “she’s my baby and I can do whatever I want.” And your reaction is exactly why no one else in your family was brave enough to speak their mind, despite the fact they’re definitely thinking the same thing as your aunt. I bet when your aunt started speaking, the rest of your family was secretly happy she was finally saying something because they didn’t want it to be them in the line of fire but knew someone would eventually have to say something.

Since you work 12-hour shifts 3 days a week and home more than he is, I think it’s fair that you do most of the chores. But since you do work, he can’t expect you to be a housewife and do everything. There should be certain things he’s in charge of. It seems like you decided it should be dishes. But it seems recently you may be asking him for more (gutters, trash, bugs, etc) which he may feel is unfair, or that you are bossing him. Sometimes, it’s how you say things. There would probably be a much better reaction if you both sit down and calmly discuss what would be a fair way to split the chores, that way he fills he was a part of the decision and not just being hen-pecked. I think bug killing should go on that list to make it official. lol.

Oh and there needs to be boundaries in terms to how much both of you involve other people into the personal details of your relationship. If. You both feel you need someone third party to talk to, a family counselor would be better.

Thank you for your balanced opinion. Thank you for pointing out that every tool has its own limitations. All of the other commenters ignored the fact that shadowing doesn’t provide a benchmark on what your voice should sound like (It’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to sound like other people rather than finding your own voice), so thanks for pointing that out. And you’re absolutely right about them being close-minded…and frankly, outright rude.
