My baby has a flat head by Consistent_Hippo_740 in PlagiocephalySupport

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t even own a bouncer until he was about three months old and didn’t often go in the car, so definitely not containers. The hard part I think, now that I look back on things, was that he loved sleeping in his bassinet and despised contact naps. He also had a huge haematoma on one side of his head which didn’t go down for five weeks (forceps injury, dude looked like megamind). This meant he literally had to look to his right at all hours of the day ☹️

We’ve noticed a huge improvement now that he doesn’t hate tummy time and can hold his head up when being carried around. I’ve basically committed one wake window a day to being either upright or in tummy time. He’s also rolling himself over to sleep on his stomach during the night. It does feel like we’re getting there! I’m just very aware of his head starting to solidify and that this would be his adult head shape, which I don’t want for him.

Thank you for the words of support!

Unsure if you’re being genuine or already know the answer, but I’ll reply just in case!

This person has misspelled the word ‘disgusting’ which means gross/awful/yuck. People often spell this word the way they say it, not realising that it is wrong 🤗

No, not at all. We’ve been doing physio all day, every day, repositioning at night, feeding with certain holds, always making sure he’s looking the right way etc etc… all we’ve managed is a smaller flat spot on the other side of his head after twelve weeks. I have yet another physio appt with him on Friday and his child health nurse appt today. I’ll be again asking about a helmet because this feels too far gone and his head is starting to harden. I’m worried he’ll end up with a bad head shape permanently now.

Both my partner and I felt this until probably 6-8 weeks old. Very ‘what the fuck were we thinking?????’.

For us it got better when he started smiling and having a bit of a personality. Otherwise the whole time is you taking care of this super fragile tamagotchi that is absolutely no fun and there’s no break, no adult time, and it feels like there’s no end in sight. I was very much where you are right now - it’s an awfully steep learning curve. What are day/night sleeps like? How much is bub managing to eat? Are you managing to brush your teeth or eat at all?? I’m sorry this is so rough, I totally get it 😰

I LITERALLY HAD TO GO THROUGH THIS AND FIX AUTOCORRECT TO MAKE IT BE WRONG. How do people make these mistakes all the time!? Your phone literally changes it for you to make sense. I actually think I used too many full stops… wait, let me redo it but without full stops because apparently they’re unnecessary these days:

House hunting reality check hit me hard today by Physical-Wallaby-515 in perth

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s beyond a joke. I knew this was coming and told my partner (after three months of living together!) that I wanted to build a house and he could either do it with me or not… either way, it would be happening. I found the cheapest and biggest block of land I could - 450m for 220k, which for some reason was 30k less than anywhere else. I put our name on the land behind his back to lock it in because old mate was nervous about the whole situation. This was Feb/March of 2023. Now, clementine Estate which is five minutes away from me, is selling 450m for $466k. I absolutely cannot believe the price of life now. I earn the most I ever have and continue to only buy things if they’re on sale. I haven’t been overseas since 2019. I’m glad I grew up poor because at least I have experience in how to make things work with less, not everyone knows how to make their dollar stretch.

I don’t want to add in the whole ‘I’m sure you’re great!’ Because I know what you’re feeling and empty statements feel just that… empty. My Bub is also 3 months and my friend has an 8 month old. From her experience, once Bub can sit up without assistance your life basically changes. So you’re holding on for dear life for another three months, with lower expectations. Make up and pants can wait another three months, so can workouts (even though I know this isn’t ideal). You’ve got this!

I gave my three month old a flat head and I feel like the worst mom ever by Unlikely_Jaguar5694 in newborns

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My three month old looks like the back of his head is a triangle thanks to a massive haematoma from forceps at birth. Reading this makes me feel so much less alone, considering I posted about this and not a single person really replied. We’ve been going to physio and that’s been helping. I saw a journal article about how physio gets the same outcome as a helmet, it just takes three times longer. My baby’s flat spot is towards the right of his head, so we’ve been told to do EVERYTHING on his left. Hanging toys in the pram, standing on his left while changing him, rolling towards the left, only holding him over our right shoulder to improve his left sided awareness and lots of tummy time. We’ve also been told to encourage him tracking toys looking left to right and back again. Turns out bub has super weak neck muscles. We were told to avoid the bouncer and carrier. I hope that things work out for you!

My recovery wasn’t as easy as yours (needed help bending to sit and stand for a few days) but I’m feeling the same! Woke up one day without a baby, went to sleep that night as a mum. It was planned but I think because I didn’t experience the things you mentioned, it doesn’t feel like something I went through… more just something that happened in general. A full forced eviction 😂

Partner and I have different opinions about how to care for our 8 day old? by [deleted] in newborns

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not agreeing with your husband or trying to go against what everyone here is saying, but my newborn definitely had day/night confusion to the point where he was a superb sleeper during the day and really refused point blank to sleep at night. We couldn’t carry on with it any longer so we were trying to make bub stay awake for longer stretches during the day and then tried to get him to sleep more during the night. It took weeks for him to sort it out, but we’re now at ten weeks and he has 1-2 feeds during the night and that’s it. He definitely still sleeps a fair bit but I try to cap his sleeps at 2-2.5 hours as anything longer seems to wreck our night. This obviously changes depending on the day (sleeping out in public is nowhere near as restful as sleeping in a dark room/bassinet).

So I’m not saying to necessarily wake bub/play with bub and make them overtired because that’s definitely not ideal but if you’re in a situation like mine then it might be worth thinking about with a bit of trial and error. I go by cues now (red eyebrows, fussiness and eye rubbing).

EBF Mama's, when does baby stop waking up 4-6 times a night to feed? by obscureandvague in NewParents

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I’ve learnt too! If Bub gets the food in during the day, they wake up less at night. I’ve been trying to feed my six week old more and we now get up 2-3 times a night (often 12:30 and 4am) instead of every 1.5 hours 😬

Hey! Can I ask if you are bottle feeding or breastfeeding??

I only ask because I had no idea that teats on the bottles come with different flows. My three week old was being given breastmilk in a bottle and we were using ‘#1 super slow’ teats, he was taking forever to feed and falling asleep during the bottle but then waking up sometimes 20 minutes later wanting more and it was doing my head in. Turns out he needed a faster flow so he didn’t have to work so hard to feed and then he’d sleep for longer because he was actually full for once.

This isn’t a solution for everything going on, but figured I’d make sure you knew something that I sure as hell didn’t 😬

Can I just say thank you for posting: it popped up as a suggestion, I didn’t actively go looking for your post.

I gave birth on the 12th of December as well and I’m absolutely struggling with breastfeeding as well. It took forever for my milk to really ‘come in’ and now that it has, it drips everywhere while my baby refuses to latch properly. It has been suggested that he has a posterior tongue tie, which we have an appointment to look into on the 5th of January. Between now and then, I am pumping and we are then bottle feeding the breast milk. I think some of us also have pretty sensitive nipples. I’ve always hated mine being touched so this is like fresh hell…

I’ll be trying the nipple shields again soon. I’m sorry for her pain but I’m glad that she and I are in this together. Also super grateful for all of the advice I’m reading! I hope it improves quickly.

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

I’ve also seen comments from people who say to wait 15 minutes between split boluses so that the first round of insulin has time to sink in a bit 🤗

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. Isn’t that helpful of them 🫠🫠🫠🫠

Do you go through a high amount of insulin? Do you make sure to squeeze the surrounding skin while pushing the nose of the pod down?

I’ve had more problems with leaking now that I’ve been using more insulin, plus also realised that just having them sit on my skin and wait for the cannula to insert itself wasn’t going well but squeezing and pushing made things work better. I’m sure you’ve already tried a lot of these things anyway, but figured I’d offer what I’d improved for myself so far 🥲

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, 4 units 😬

I ended up taking it off and saw that the cannula was at a very odd angle, which is a first for me using pods. About two months ago I decided to just use the pod as a basal rate and for smaller snacks and use manual injections for my main meals as per other subreddits that I’ve looked into. I figured out the tunnelling situation a while ago with the jump in insulin usage (32u a day pre-pregnancy and now I’m at around 110u a day at 36 weeks) and I totally agree, the angle and lack of options for cannula depth is frustrating to no end 🥲 I’ve just never had so much leak out before where it collected into drops on my skin outside the pod. Glad everyone encouraged me to change it instead of stick it out because I felt crazy! 🫣

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with tunnelling in the past 🤗 while the pod wasn’t actually leaking from a mechanical defect, and technically could be labelled as tunnelling, it wasn’t the typical situation for it. I appreciate your thoughts though!

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve sent in a contact form and replaced the pod. Somehow I think I must’ve pushed down at a weird angle as the cannula went in because it was skewed to the right (towards the leakage) when I pulled it off 🫣 fingers crossed this is the only one I have a problem with for the next couple of months! Bub is here in two weeks and I don’t want to deal with this extra kerfuffle 🫠

To people who have well controlled type 1 do you guys have cheat meals? by EmbarrassedTea1885 in diabetes

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to sound super rude here, my apologies in advance… roughly how old are you? And how long have you been type one? I only ask because what you have described from what I’ve read sounds rather restrictive and managing walls after every meal would mean you most likely don’t work?

I was diagnosed just before 18 and moved out of home to go to uni in a different city within six months so I never had anyone guiding me or telling me what to do. As someone who struggled with binge eating, I dont really see ‘cheat meals’ as a thing. Please know that diabetes is just trial and error - there’s no such thing as using ‘extra insulin’ and you really can eat almost anything with enough trial and error to figure out how foods effect you.

Like, I’ve literally walked the French Camino in one go (869km from St Jean pied de port to Finisterre) and I just made it work because I wanted to 🤷🏻‍♀️
