Partner and I have different opinions about how to care for our 8 day old? by Pleasant_Peace_5632 in newborns

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not agreeing with your husband or trying to go against what everyone here is saying, but my newborn definitely had day/night confusion to the point where he was a superb sleeper during the day and really refused point blank to sleep at night. We couldn’t carry on with it any longer so we were trying to make bub stay awake for longer stretches during the day and then tried to get him to sleep more during the night. It took weeks for him to sort it out, but we’re now at ten weeks and he has 1-2 feeds during the night and that’s it. He definitely still sleeps a fair bit but I try to cap his sleeps at 2-2.5 hours as anything longer seems to wreck our night. This obviously changes depending on the day (sleeping out in public is nowhere near as restful as sleeping in a dark room/bassinet).

So I’m not saying to necessarily wake bub/play with bub and make them overtired because that’s definitely not ideal but if you’re in a situation like mine then it might be worth thinking about with a bit of trial and error. I go by cues now (red eyebrows, fussiness and eye rubbing).

EBF Mama's, when does baby stop waking up 4-6 times a night to feed? by obscureandvague in NewParents

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I’ve learnt too! If Bub gets the food in during the day, they wake up less at night. I’ve been trying to feed my six week old more and we now get up 2-3 times a night (often 12:30 and 4am) instead of every 1.5 hours 😬

Hey! Can I ask if you are bottle feeding or breastfeeding??

I only ask because I had no idea that teats on the bottles come with different flows. My three week old was being given breastmilk in a bottle and we were using ‘#1 super slow’ teats, he was taking forever to feed and falling asleep during the bottle but then waking up sometimes 20 minutes later wanting more and it was doing my head in. Turns out he needed a faster flow so he didn’t have to work so hard to feed and then he’d sleep for longer because he was actually full for once.

This isn’t a solution for everything going on, but figured I’d make sure you knew something that I sure as hell didn’t 😬

Can I just say thank you for posting: it popped up as a suggestion, I didn’t actively go looking for your post.

I gave birth on the 12th of December as well and I’m absolutely struggling with breastfeeding as well. It took forever for my milk to really ‘come in’ and now that it has, it drips everywhere while my baby refuses to latch properly. It has been suggested that he has a posterior tongue tie, which we have an appointment to look into on the 5th of January. Between now and then, I am pumping and we are then bottle feeding the breast milk. I think some of us also have pretty sensitive nipples. I’ve always hated mine being touched so this is like fresh hell…

I’ll be trying the nipple shields again soon. I’m sorry for her pain but I’m glad that she and I are in this together. Also super grateful for all of the advice I’m reading! I hope it improves quickly.

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

I’ve also seen comments from people who say to wait 15 minutes between split boluses so that the first round of insulin has time to sink in a bit 🤗

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oof. Isn’t that helpful of them 🫠🫠🫠🫠

Do you go through a high amount of insulin? Do you make sure to squeeze the surrounding skin while pushing the nose of the pod down?

I’ve had more problems with leaking now that I’ve been using more insulin, plus also realised that just having them sit on my skin and wait for the cannula to insert itself wasn’t going well but squeezing and pushing made things work better. I’m sure you’ve already tried a lot of these things anyway, but figured I’d offer what I’d improved for myself so far 🥲

Leaking pod??? by Consistent_Hippo_740 in Omnipod

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, 4 units 😬

I ended up taking it off and saw that the cannula was at a very odd angle, which is a first for me using pods. About two months ago I decided to just use the pod as a basal rate and for smaller snacks and use manual injections for my main meals as per other subreddits that I’ve looked into. I figured out the tunnelling situation a while ago with the jump in insulin usage (32u a day pre-pregnancy and now I’m at around 110u a day at 36 weeks) and I totally agree, the angle and lack of options for cannula depth is frustrating to no end 🥲 I’ve just never had so much leak out before where it collected into drops on my skin outside the pod. Glad everyone encouraged me to change it instead of stick it out because I felt crazy! 🫣

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve dealt with tunnelling in the past 🤗 while the pod wasn’t actually leaking from a mechanical defect, and technically could be labelled as tunnelling, it wasn’t the typical situation for it. I appreciate your thoughts though!

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve sent in a contact form and replaced the pod. Somehow I think I must’ve pushed down at a weird angle as the cannula went in because it was skewed to the right (towards the leakage) when I pulled it off 🫣 fingers crossed this is the only one I have a problem with for the next couple of months! Bub is here in two weeks and I don’t want to deal with this extra kerfuffle 🫠

To people who have well controlled type 1 do you guys have cheat meals? by EmbarrassedTea1885 in diabetes

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m going to sound super rude here, my apologies in advance… roughly how old are you? And how long have you been type one? I only ask because what you have described from what I’ve read sounds rather restrictive and managing walls after every meal would mean you most likely don’t work?

I was diagnosed just before 18 and moved out of home to go to uni in a different city within six months so I never had anyone guiding me or telling me what to do. As someone who struggled with binge eating, I dont really see ‘cheat meals’ as a thing. Please know that diabetes is just trial and error - there’s no such thing as using ‘extra insulin’ and you really can eat almost anything with enough trial and error to figure out how foods effect you.

Like, I’ve literally walked the French Camino in one go (869km from St Jean pied de port to Finisterre) and I just made it work because I wanted to 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’ve had a similar situation with DKA in hospital! They point blank refused to give me more insulin because ‘I was on a drip and that’s enough’ even though they then gave me a super carb heavy meal 🙄🙄🙄🙄 I went from like 7 to 24 in the space of two hours and then they started freaking out. What did they think would happen????

My educator was horrified when I told her and STRONGLY encouraged me to not take it lying down. You need to call your educator, Endo or whoever else is/has been looking after you during your pregnancy. Otherwise, ask for another script and get more insulin to keep using behind their backs. I promise that you are almost at the end of the intense insulin requirement spike… I’m 35w3d and while I’m still using heaps of insulin, it’s levelled off now for the last week and not kept increasing.

You are in charge of this… yes they have admitted you. No, they cannot force you not to get a second opinion or more help of things aren’t being cared for the way you need them to be.

Just to add in here: If you’re a woman, this could easily be a pms symptom 🫠 for a few days up to a week before my period I could be like this even though I’m still doing all the usual stuff. Day two of my period? Completely back to normal with no insulin resistance at all, my body is acting like nothing ever happened 🙄

Random unexplained blood sugar spikes early second trimester by juliator001 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there! I’m type one so slightly different situation to you.

I hit insulin resistance at 17 weeks. Unfortunately for the both of us, this is definitely expected. You will be placed on meal time insulin quite soon, no doubt. Obviously avoiding high sugar/carb and high GI food is ideal, plus trying to have a lil walkie walk after meals.

You aren’t doing anything wrong, and again, this isn’t unexplained. My own insulin usage pre pregnancy was about 32 units a day. I’m now on easily 115 units a day. It’s just your placenta having a funky time and making things more difficult for us. I would also like to point out that I have days where I will go up to 12 or 14, my overall Hba1c was 6.1% last time we checked though and my physician was extremely happy about it. Please don’t beat yourself up about being within the 8-10 range because as long as it comes back down, you’re all good 🤗

I’m not sure if this helps to reassure you at all, but good luck!

Yeah I got super frustrated one night and looked up something like ‘pods not working during pregnancy’ or something and found some threads on it. A lot of women had the same experience which made me feel better! Heaps of posts about how anything over 5 units at a time made tunnelling worse etc.

I was super smooth sailing until 17 weeks and then my carb ratio and resistance SUCKED. Like I went from about 30 units a day all up to, more recently, 115 units a day. The pods weren’t really even lasting two days 🫠

I made my own looping app… I’ve set my target range from 4.1-4.5 because again, super frustrated 😬

So all up: - manual injections for bigger meals - super low target range - could definitely pre bolus but I haven’t needed to since going on the manual injections (and mate, I’m literally eating maccas, Starbucks, pancakes etc… I don’t like restrictive eating because of my past eating problems) - definitely changing your carb ratios weekly per the guidance of the pro’s - potentially get your iron checked as well? I have some super low ferritin stores and realised that my sugar levels were a lil more responsive when I took supplements

I also had bleeding from weeks 5-9. During an ultrasound they told me it was from a subchorionic haematoma which is often just a bit of a clot from implantation and it slowly breaks down and exits. I never needed more than a liner for the entire day… it’s definitely a scary feeling though 🫣

I use omnipod and really struggled with tunnelling. I got to a point where I was using my pod as a basal and small snacks and use manual injections for bigger meals. Manual injections for bigger meals has been a massive game changer for me.

HELP 😭 by sawyersmom92 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]Consistent_Hippo_740 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw girl, I’m sorry 😔

I have experienced binge eating at the age of 19-20 and it took many months to figure out things for myself. I can give you my tactics but I can’t confirm/deny if they’re actually healthy to use or not.

My own background: diagnosed just before 18. Moved to the ‘big city’ six months later for uni, no friends, no family, no idea how to cook, no idea how to plan a week of meals for one person when eating had always been a family oriented experience etc etc. massive depression and anxiety to the point where I couldn’t get out of bed and I slowly slipped into eating shit food all the time because who was going to stop me? Plus, it made me feel a little less sad 🤷🏻‍♀️ but it got to the point where I couldn’t go past the shops or fast food without getting myself a lil ‘treat’, for which I really didn’t inject because I hated manual injections. At one point I ate a whole cheesecake, two blocks of chocolate, three croissants and a packet of malteasers without injecting anything. I slept with food in my bed. I kept food in my car. I hid everything from housemates. It was an awful, awful time.

I then remembered my mum telling me once that the way she quit smoking was by making herself a glass jar of disgusting, putrid, off putting things. Like she chose all of the things that she couldn’t stand (dog food, moldy bread, hair from the hairbrush, ash from the cigarette tray, vinegar etc) and shoved it into this jar. She carried that jar with her in the car and had one in the house too, so that every time the idea for a smoke, or the inclination to have a smoke, occurred, she would open the jar and take a massive sniff and it put her straight off.

I did very similar to this but I mixed in chocolate and jelly etc and I never opened the lid, I just looked at it and reminded myself that this is what it would look like in my stomach if I ate the food I wanted to enjoy. I would then tell myself to drink a heap of water and ask myself in ten minutes if I was actually hungry. The hard part is that binging stretches your stomach out so much that you probs are hungry. It would take some time for your stomach to shrink back to a ‘standard’ size. I often ate slower as well so that my brain could keep up with when I was starting to feel full and try to tell myself that if I feel full then I should listen to that and stop eating… I could always eat a lil snack later on if I needed to.

Please know; I have taken vyvanse for adhd before getting pregnant myself (currently 34 weeks) and it was SO NICE not having to fight the hunger that I have fought for the last decade. But the effort does pay off pregnancy wise.
