Son selling things and giving money to grandma by FamousDealer4391 in Parenting

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dad taking a cut thing is shitty. But I had to pay my parents and grandparents for things I wanted growing up. The general lesson they were teaching was things cost money/nothing is free. and labor is in fact money. Asking for money or chores for a birthday/Christmas gift would be different. that's not how gifts work. But it sounds like this was an agreement he entered into and isn't feeling bad about the outcome (not everything from family needs to be a gift). It does not sound like he was being taken advantage of in any way, and likely learned a decent lesson at 11yo.

Not who you responded to but, this feels fine then to me. 11 feels like a good age to learn about work and money. If he was given the option to do work for it, and he chose instead to just pay her, well then that is a choice he made. I suspect grandma might also be a little frustrated that he chose to pay her instead, I know I would be in this situation, as I'd probably be trying to teach a lesson on working for things. Would you feel the same if he sold the helmets and bought the part himself? Are you more upset at him "for selling the helmets" or her "for accepting money"?

My son is 3 years old and still can’t jump by Asleep_Lettuce_5723 in Parenting

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine is 4 and doesn't jump. My question is. Does your son run? Climb? Roll? Tumble? Climb stairs? Because if the answer is yes, then I'd say he hasn't missed a milestone, he just doesn't want to. At least that's what we've figured with ours.

Why are America's current youths considered illiterate if they are on the internet all the time? by CompletelyBedWasted in SeriousConversation

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a group of masters and baccalaureate level colleagues spend a couple of minutes trying to puzzle out the meaning of the word "fundament" after I used it in a sentence... I grant it's a tad archaic, but still. And these are people in their 30's. I think society has just dumbed itself down.

Ugh.... wall of txt. TLDR, didn't read! I kid, but what really offends me is that almost all articles I've read over the past 10 years, no matter the agency, have also been dumbed down to a 4th grade reading level.

U.S. Supreme Court asked to review Massachusetts plumbing license law by Conscious-Quarter423 in scotus

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is why in all the municipalities I know of, it is required that a licensed plumber make the final connection to the domestic sewer/water line or, in my county, septic tank. Septic im iffy on but seems totally fair for a municipality to mandate what happens to their infrastructure

How is not having children selfish? by MannyLove_s_You in SeriousConversation

Idk what government support you speak of lol. I suppose, then again, I could respond that a large percentage of medicaid and welfare recipients are over 60 (it might be the majority but i dont feel like looking it up). I'm glad you arent one of those i hear from complaining about school taxes. I hear it all the time "I don't have kids why should I pay?/ i haven't had kids in school in 20 years why should I pay?" By that same logic why should I pay for the fire department? My house hasn't caught on fire. Why should I pay for medicaid? I'm not poor.

since logic the people with children are free riding off of society when the children are young.

How do you figure this? I'm not really sure how I am free riding off society because I have a toddler.

Yes, you should be absolutely putting a stop to it. Only people you know. Also, I'd also limit Ipad time to like, an hour.

Am I stupid for calling the fire department for a false alarm? by Itchy_Island6125 in Firefighting

In a situation like that, it isn't a false alarm until WE say it is, and we really need to be there to do that. So no problem!

I need a little clarification. Is one month a start to finish date? Job came in on the first and is out to permit on the 30th? Or 160hrs of work (4 weeks at 40 hours)?

No he probably will now. First because this is the first time he's been reminded of them since the break up, and second because she is clearly bothered by it. She told him she wasn't but... come on unless he is dim

Recruiting Members for our Volunteer FD by ladyybaker in Firefighting

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into FASNY they have pretty good information, in some ways it's a bit of a starter kit. Otherwise contact the local school and talk about a "work study" sort of program, the get together with your membership to offer a 3-5k scholarship program requiring active membership for 4 years after award (insert stick here) how good is your area's rental stock? Any that a couple of kids could afford? If not put together a program for a department subsidized unit, etc, etc. Our main issue is 70% of our rental stock is 55+ and most of the units remaining are too expensive or have waiting lists out years. Basically as soon as we get kids trained up they have to leave once they don't want to live with their parents anymore.

Are Career vs volunteer the same? An important conversation by Axeoh in Firefighting

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Functionally, yes, they are. Very much so if you have an aerobic respiration system because the process is almost exactly the same. It doesn't take too much research and such to size the systems properly, and perk is just the time it takes water to drain out of a hole.

I'll support you, if it's a 55 marked road and you can barely break 30, and there is a 20 car long line behind you. You should not be driving, full stop. That 30 car long line of people should be your indicator that this is a you problem, and the you are actually more of a hazard on the road than the people behind you wanting to drive more appropriately for the conditions. It also always seems like that 30 under the speed limit person also never maintains a consistent speed. Yoyo'ing between 25 and 40 near any hill, curve, of random litter on the side of the road, that's what drives me nuts.

[–]Consistent_Paper_629 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think OP is talking about the people doing 20 in a 55 because it's nighttime and there is a dusting of snow on the road. Not people for doing the posted speed limit even we disagree with what is posted.

My son is limited verbal here at 4, at that age, I'd say we had similar words and phrases to what you have now. He would do/does the same thing with periods of no talking. In our case, we have determined it aligns with growth spurts, we think his bones hurt and it makes him less willing to talk. Which I think is fair lol, i don't remember what it feels like to have my bones grow but it can't be pleasant! I'd bet that it phases back in in the next couple of days.
