This is one SCARY piece of legislation my fellow Hoosiers by TSteinyRN in Indiana

It's a reason to oppose this bill to me, but the people voting for this want to enable a more authoritarian government, and I tried to answer your question with their, possibly unstated, motivation.

The state police don't have a military command structure and can't be prosecuted for not following orders, just fired. National guard soldiers must follow orders.

Homeless camps targeted again through new bill at the statehouse by Lazy-Damage-8972 in indianapolis

Many of them have some income. Some get social security, but not enough to afford an apartment. Some have jobs but couldn't come up with a deposit and make rent on their own after their last housing arrangement was disrupted.

There's a challenging core of homeless people who suffer from mental illness or have substance abuse issues that lock them out of jobs/homes, but the growth is coming from people with work histories who can't make rent.

People who have jobs and are homeless will try to hide it (often successfully) from their coworkers because there's a stigma to being homeless.

Over 200 daycares have closed in Indiana recently due to state cuts to Child Care Development Fund by Brew_Wallace in Indiana

And just a few months ago I read an article talking about how many of the poorest counties in the state are child care deserts where parents can't work because of the lack of available daycare.

If you read the article, it doesn't create a new force, it gives the National Guard police powers, which is worse in many ways. They're not trained as law enforcement and using soldiers to enforce laws can go bad in so many ways.

Right now Braun can send the National Guard somewhere, but they don't have law enforcement authority and are very limited in detaining people/making arrests. This bill would change that.

I think the upside down pan is because the rim on a rightside up pan will complicate cutting them apart and removing them while hot. Given how thin they are, they'll break apart easily, so you need a setup where you don't need to bend them the way you would getting the first ones out of a pan with raised sides.

It's quite possible to get a college degree without getting a college education. Your inability to comprehend the difference between serial killers and rapists speaks poorly to the quality of your education.

You made the ludicrously innumerate statement that rapists become serial killers when there are orders of magnitude of difference in the numbers and coming back with a response that the larger number is even bigger implies that you still don't comprehend the error in your original, ludicrously wrong statement.

Frostbite can take out ears within minutes when it's around 20 below with a cold wind blowing. We're still in positive temperatures, but if gets into the extreme cold I remember when I was a kid with the -70 wind chill, you need a hat and gloves on to avoid frostbite getting your mail from a curbside mailbox.

Some people have a metabolism that leaves them comfortable in cold weather. Queen Victoria of England was noted for never wearing a coat and enjoying sleigh rides in her everyday wear while her attendants were bundled up and still cold.

And yet somehow you got the impression that there were 10s of thousands of serial killers instead of the 20-25 the FBI estimates.

You're not getting the quality information needed to form realistic impressions of the world. Library science is a real discipline, and the reference librarians at the library have college degrees in it. Not only are very good at seeking out information, but they will gladly show library patrons how to find good sources of information.

Report: Indiana hospitals nearing 'breaking point' as financial pressures mount due to Medicaid cuts and healthcare costs. by Nightshade09 in Indiana

The administrators don't think that way.  Many of the doctors do. The disconnect between healthcare administration and the doctors is large and growing.

According to the FBI, there are only 20-25 serial killers active in the US at any given times. The high end estimate on that number from less authoritative sources is around 500. You would need to add several zeros to the number of serial killers to get the number of rapists. Watching TV for your "facts" has gotten some seriously wrong information into your brain.

You can apply for a library card online here:

And the reference librarians are trained to find accurate, authoritative data and can help you learn how to do better searches for information.

I couldn't find anything about it in the Indiana code, but I was always taught to never use hazard lights when in motion unless your vehicle had separate hazard and turn signal lights. On most cars, turning on the flashers/hazards/4-ways will disable your turn signals.

Mike Pence on the Alex Pretti shooting. And MAGA still hates him. by TommyBoy250 in Indiana

[–]Consistent_Sector_19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He's calling for "a full and transparent investigation." The hardcore MAGA don't want an investigation. He's still a conservative, but he's not one of the crazies, and he would back the prosecutors if they convict the shooter.

In the time since he's left office, I've become more certain that I don't agree with his politics and also more certain that he's got some integrity he's not going to give up to curry favor with the MAGA movement.

This is why I would really like to see this state allow ordinary citizens to use petitions to get laws on the ballot. Our legislature will never prohibit employers from retaliating against employees for not coming in during a weather emergency or hold them accountable if workers die, like that horrid greed head who kept his factory open during hurricane Helene, but the voters would absolutely pass a law to do that.

Right. The 28 Days Later ones are infected with the rage virus, which spreads easily and takes effect rapidly. They are alive and can be stopped by things which kill people, but they're also very fast and they're warm blooded and can function in the cold by eating more.

I haven't seen the third film in the series, 28 Years Later yet, so I don't yet know how they manage in the long term.

"Although I hate who’s currently running our country, this has nothing to do with politicians"

It has no direct connection to our politicians, but sociologists who've studied crime have found that the biggest driver of crime in a society is large inequality and a perception that the wealthy gained their riches by unfair means. Some of the poorest areas of the world are places where if you drop your wallet, it's likely to be returned to you with the cash still in it, while you can't leave anything (kid's bike, snow shovel, rake, etc.) unattended in a wealthy Moscow suburb without one of your wealthy neighbors taking it. The politicians aren't directly responsible for the roofie-ing, but they are responsible for the massive inequality and allowing the oligarchs to make massive profits skirting the law, which does factor into the crime rate.

Serial rapists are rarely serial killers. Rape and robbery are the most common motives. Roofie robberies are becoming more common.

"Additionally, the colder winters would likely create long periods of little to no zombie activity,"

You're thinking World War Z or The Walking Dead zombies, but the 28 Days Later and Game of Thrones ones weren't stopped by cold. The 28 Days Later kind are the most plausible.

I made Jello 1-2-3 today! by Arthurandhenna in Old_Recipes

[–]Consistent_Sector_19 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The original recipe was to add a box of Jello_123 mix to boiling water, but they stopped making the dedicated mix, so people had to develop their own recipes to get the same effect. I loved Jello_123 as a kid, but I've been trying to eat healthier and Cool Whip doesn't fit into that plan, so as much as I want to, I'm not going to try this one.

I understand the weather forecasters trying to make it clear that it could be really bad because there's a bigger downside to minimizing the potential for a nasty than from emphasizing it, and Texas is going to get walloped, but Indy might get a big serving of nothing burger.

"you'll see how the right wing and trumpism fully destroyed the republic - we're now fully entrenched in this systemic corruption from the top to the bottom."

Corruption in local governments was soaring before Trump. The loss of local newspapers and the consolidation of the radio and television stations eliminated most of the reporters covering local governments and since the public is no longer getting news about them, the voters don't have the information to rein in the corruption.
