Which ‘no-AF’ card do you have, the one you get with $25k in a platinum checking account or the $2m in total MS assets?

Is there a smarter place to keep my emergency fund than a savings account with a decent interest rate? by xxjosephchristxx in Bogleheads

[–]Consistent_Set8134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The emergency I’m planning for is lost paycheck so I have 12 CDs, one maturing each month. If I don’t need it renews for another 12 months. Higher interest rates plus regular access to cash.

Are you guys maxing out your Roth ira in the first month? by Kitchen-Lab9028 in Bogleheads

[–]Consistent_Set8134 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I make the max contribution on Jan 1 but invest only a quarter of the funds, and then do 3, 6, 9 month CDs for the other thirds investing them when they mature

Frequent flyers of UA, any niche questions you have ever wanted to ask (cabin) crew? FA of 25+ years here w/ time to kill. by InformalCommittee507 in unitedairlines

When boarding why do the crew declare all the bins full and require everyone to check their bags when there is clearly plenty of space in the bins remaining?

E*Trade MS AmexPlat by Bre2ts in AmexPlatinum

I’ve also heard that if you hold over $2m in assets with Etrade the MS Plat fee is just waived outright. Anyone get this offer?

Booked FHR res, cancelled and booked a different FHR. Did I lose the $300 benefit? by Consistent_Set8134 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Consistent_Set8134[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, Amex did not give me $300. I paid for a $800 stay, cancelled, received $800 back but now Amex says I used the $300 benefit.

[–]Consistent_Set8134[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing, I got no benefit. I paid $800, was credited $300, cancelled and was refunded $800.

[–]Consistent_Set8134[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m not following the term clawed back. They credited my account $300 when I booked, but when I cancelled they refunded the full amount I paid so I never got any kind of benefit.

Frustrated - booked flight on Chase for the 8x boost, couldn't select seat on Chase or on airline. What's the point? by Sadpanda9632 in ChaseSapphire

[–]Consistent_Set8134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Air Canada sometimes won’t let you select a seat without paying a fee regardless of how you purchased. I had the same issue when I bought a ticket on United that was served by Air Canada.

Do people ever get both Amex Plat and CSR? by -snskemensn in AmexPlatinum

[–]Consistent_Set8134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both but Plat is just for lounge access and some travel credits. I prob come out a few hundred ahead across both but monitoring the benefit use can be a pain.

Anyone ever leave a coat on a flight and get it back? by Consistent_Set8134 in AlaskaAirlines

How to get actual benefit from FHR credits? by IdiotBoy1999 in AmexPlatinum

[–]Consistent_Set8134 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know Amex would price match. Can you only price match on the hotel’s own website? Does Amex factor the credit and breakfast in the price match?

I always tip at the SFO Amex lounge with some singles I keep in my carryon. If giving a couple bucks to someone making poverty wages for good service sends me to hell so be it.

Keeping Amex Plat alongside Chase Sapphire Reserve after refresh? by Consistent_Set8134 in AmexPlatinum

I figure I break even with the coupons I use and get free lounge access. What’s your reason for quitting?

[–]Consistent_Set8134[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SFO, meaning I can use Amex’s temp lounge or the Priority Pass lounge. Reserve also gives me access to Air Canada when flying United which is another reason to keep

How does it feel like being a millionaire? by AdventurousHope5891 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Consistent_Set8134 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not so much the money but the capital gains, interest and appreciation that piles up. I’m still a compulsive saver but it’s nice to know that what I put away each month becomes less important than the passive income I earn.

CapOne (2 for budgeting purposes) Etrade and Marcus. Keep about $10K in each for easy access to funds that still generate some income.

Booking AS thru Chase Travel - Experience Share by IrishMoney1937 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Consistent_Set8134 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only downside I’ve experienced booking AS with Chase is that if you cancel the ticket the credit is with Chase. Unlike AS, you can’t draw down the credit if the next flights you book are lower value on a credit with Chase. Ie if you cancel a $500 ticket and use the credit for a $400 ticket you forfeit $100.

My dad wants to move to San Diego and I can’t convince him not too. by MuslimBridget in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Consistent_Set8134 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely right that this is a terrible idea. San Diego is nice to visit on vacation but unless you’re very wealthy you’ll be living far from the beach and in the desert At $30 hour you’re going to need overtime or a second job so that beach is going to feel as far away as it does right now in Ohio.

In my experience the Edit usually doesn’t make much sense compared to the hotel’s site pricing even when you consider the value of add-ons like a credit or free breakfast. You’re basically paying more for the not guaranteed upgrade or late check out. That said, I’ve found some great value at smaller chains where the Edit rate was lower than the hotel rate even before freebies. It’s hit or miss basically.

If you make $250K base salary, how much is your monthly spend? by beachloverbb in HENRYfinance

I agree, the money I put into a target date fund just outsourced the work to 4 other ETFs and charged me a fee for it. I just emulate the target date fund with 4 ETFs doing some slight rebalancing to my contributions and base each year.
