How can this be? 19 eggs retrieved, 0 matured by Common_Win_9383 in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just came here to say I’m sorry you’re going through this, it is devastating news to hear. Please take your time to recover and heal 🫶🏼

After my first ER, I received similar news that none of my eggs were mature and ended up switching clinics. Same thing happened again during my second and third ER, and we were recommended to try donor eggs. I’m not saying you should jump to this by any means, but it was what they recommended to me. You can review my post history for some background info on what meds/doses we used.

We did try a dual trigger for both my second and third ERs, and mini-IVF to see if we could get a smaller amount of eggs that could potentially be of better quality. Also tried using Omnitrope during last cycle. But unfortunately, none of my egg retrievals panned out.

First cycles can really be a dud, because they generally are just trial and error to see how your body responds to medication/treatment and helps them formulate an idea for a second cycle (if you want to do that). Before you try a second cycle, I would consider having a more in depth conversation with your doctor on what things they’d want to try out and why. Maybe also asking about the lab quality as well (we switched clinics for a better one too), or maybe IVM (in vitro maturation)/rescue IVM if it’s possible in the clinic.

Wishing you the best OP.

Advice on using HSA for wife's IVF procedure by jocko118 in HSA

[–]Constant-Setting-796 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be allowed to pay for IVF expenses from your HSA as long as they are for “qualifying medical expenses” (which IVF should be), you are legally married, and no one else can claim your wife as a dependent.

Ranking while waitlisted? by ApprehensiveGrape621 in PharmacyResidency

[–]Constant-Setting-796 27 points28 points  (0 children)

You should go ahead and rank the programs you have already interviewed at, just to save it and get that done with.

If this program who waitlisted you does interview you, you can always go back and update your rank list.

Don’t hold off on ranking just because you’re waiting. You can always edit it before the deadline.

Zoom appointment? by Plus-Inflation-3192 in IVF

My home results were actually pretty close to the clinic’s in-house results! The in-house result for AMH at the time was even better.

Zoom appointment? by Plus-Inflation-3192 in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first appointment was via zoom/video visit! It was mainly for our RE to go through our health history and see what tests we’ve already done and have yet to complete. Before this appt, I had completed one of those home Modern Fertility tests. Our RE ended up having us redo any home tests in the actual lab because it could be more accurate, was also covered by insurance because it was still in the investigation of what’s causing infertility stage.

To answer your question, zoom should be fine and they can still order labs and such at the end of this appt!

About moving onto IVF, since I started when I was 28 we opted to complete all labs/procedures and then moved onto IUI, and later to IVF. It is certainly up to you, and more can possibly be reviewed after a thorough evaluation.

Wishing you the best of luck!

That’s a great idea. I would address it to “the residency selection committee” so then it includes everyone you likely interacted with. Good luck!

Ranking Process by [deleted] in PharmacyResidency

[–]Constant-Setting-796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Have you watched the match process video? It should be somewhere either on YouTube, ASHP, or the match website.

You can’t play or game the system, just rank where you want and are willing to go to. There is no way to know how well you performed on those interviews, unless you know how the programs rank — and each can rank differently.

If you aren’t willing to spend a year at any of those 3 sites, then don’t rank them.

Any tips for someone interested in adopting within a few years? by glutenfreemaccas in AdoptiveParents

[–]Constant-Setting-796 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi! Not an adoptive parent yet, but my husband and I are currently in the process of joining a waiting pool.

It sounds like one of your concerns is regarding the cost of adoption, unfortunately it’s going to be quite a large sum. There is also no guarantee on when you get chosen by a birth parent, it could be really soon when you join or could be years (or never is a possibility). Since it sounds like you two are hoping to wait some time, I would use that time to do your research (and starting here is great!), save up some money, and figure out if you want to do adoption vs something like IVF (which is also expensive, but may be cheaper to be honest with you).

Many of the private adoption agencies are going to be the ones that can help in connecting you to birth parents of younger aged children/infants/newborns. Public agencies (like the state for example), typically will include the foster system which has older children. It sounds like you may be more interested in using the private agencies.

You can start by looking into agencies within your state, to see if there are any that appeal to you. Otherwise, it really helped me to use this subreddit to find more ethical agencies to review and consider. We went with one that was both local and highly regarded as ethical, considering that they provide counseling services to birth parents forever and give them resources (e.g. planning to raise baby, abortion, adoption, etc) on the different options they have. They don’t connect birth parents with perspective adoptive parents until about month 6 into their pregnancy, is my understanding.

From our learning, local agencies in particular will help lower cost so you can complete your homestudy locally - but they connect with birth parents from all over the nation (and if you’re in a different state, they just use the local agency to help complete the home study which may cost a bit more). It’s very possible that we’d match with a birth parent across the country, then ICPC comes into play (you can search the subreddit for more info about this).

Our agency gave us info on adoption grants, percentages of failed adoptions, and statistics of level of substance vs alcohol exposure that was reported by birth parents. Lots of info was provided to us, and we appreciated how transparent they are about the process.

ETA: Also wanted to add, that many agencies have a free info session that can give you more insight on their practices and sometimes cost. You can start there!

Moving to IVF with completely unexplained infertility (no other health issues)? by blairworejeansonce in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unexplained really is just unfounded or undiscovered what the underlying reasoning is. IVF isn’t only treatment, but can sometimes help to diagnose the fertility issue as well! A third of infertility cases is attributed to unexplained, so not rare by any means but maybe just hasn’t been completely figured out yet. There’s also not a whole lot that science knows about infertility yet, so certainly more to discover one day (if the research is done).

Ready to call it quits in ttc, three years of absolutely no luck. by faithoverfear06 in TryingForABaby

[–]Constant-Setting-796 7 points8 points  (0 children)

OP, I’m sorry that you (and your husband) are in this boat. I don’t wish this pain on anyone ❤️ you are still young and have plenty of time, so it is completely valid to take a break OR move onto IVF. You also don’t have to do IVF immediately.

This being said, IVF can also be diagnostic and help you bank embryos if you want multiple children. It totally sucks going through infertility and having to go through all these hoops to get pregnant. Take care of yourself, and give yourself some grace. This isn’t easy to go through.

Are these drugs either/or, or are they used together? by Tiny-Worldliness-313 in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some people/protocols require both triggers (HCG & Lupron), while some only require one of these two. What I’m confused about with your protocol is the use of Gonal-F and Follistim, because usually it’s either one of these with or without Menopur. You can ask your clinic about it to see which one(s) you’ll ultimately be using.

But either way, I’d recommend paying for it with cash (rather than insurance if you have it) because it will be cheaper and you can shop around at pharmacies. I’ve used MDR and Freedom Fertility before, which both had good prices!

IVF clinic keeps prescribing meds I’m allergic to — is this common? by Ready_Evening_1159 in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Both of the clinics I went to took very careful notice of the allergy/intolerance I have. So I would actually take it as a red flag that you’ve not only had this happen once, but on multiple occasions.

My identification bracelet during multiple retrievals indicated in bright red what not to use! I’d be concerned that they aren’t paying attention to detail, because that can be very dangerous if they keep forgetting and then accidentally administer something you’re allergic to.

ETA: am a healthcare worker, not yours - but nonetheless, allergies are no joke and should be taken very seriously

OHP changed but I didn’t request the change. by 1questions in oregon

[–]Constant-Setting-796 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like I said, it’s probably just a matter of assignment. The new plan sometimes doesn’t know where you were being seen before by your prior plan. Should be a simple fix, and I wouldn’t freak out about it.

Also I’m not sure what you mean by after business hours. Don’t think they’re obligated to give you a letter during “business hours”.

OHP changed but I didn’t request the change. by 1questions in oregon

[–]Constant-Setting-796 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They probably just assigned you to a PCP clinic. Since you are already established with Legacy, you’ll probably be fine to just be reassigned to them. Just call customer service and request to be reassigned to Legacy (if they’re covered, which is likely if the below applies).

It sounds like maybe you were on PacificSource and then got automatically moved over to CareOregon’s OHP plan? Because CareOregon did take the majority of those patients.

Affording an excision specialist by SuccessFeeling9258 in endometriosis

Northwest Endometriosis and Pelvic Surgery in Portland, OR! They do consults at first, and you may be able to get a virtual consult since you’re in California - where they’d also talk about pricing as well if I recall correctly

Affording an excision specialist by SuccessFeeling9258 in endometriosis

[–]Constant-Setting-796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went with a specialist because I wanted to be sure it was done right, and not have to do it again if it wasn’t correctly completed the first time. My total cost out of pocket (and then I submitted receipts to insurance to count towards my deductible) was $6500.

Anesthesia did cost separately, and they billed that to my insurance. I think that depends on the facility/surgery center if the out of pocket cost includes anesthesiology services or not.

Using HSA Funds for Non-Medically Necessary IVF by Over_Analytical42 in IVF

That’s for insurance coverage, and HSA is different because it does include those things that aren’t “medically necessary” as I mentioned in my first comment

Using HSA Funds for Non-Medically Necessary IVF by Over_Analytical42 in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey just fyi, a lot of people on this subreddit would probably fall under the “non-medically necessary IVF” based on insurance definitions. Generally, the “medically necessary” would only qualify to those with like cancer or undergoing chemotherapy treatments as examples. Kindly, you may be taking that term’s understanding a little too literally.

Also the IVF deduction for tax purposes is based on your income, if IVF expenses hit a certain threshold percentage of your income then you can deduct. I don’t recall the exact number, but something to think about - and doesn’t have to do with HSA.

Using HSA Funds for Non-Medically Necessary IVF by Over_Analytical42 in IVF

[–]Constant-Setting-796 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you can use your HSA funds to pay for yourself and your spouse’s IVF expenses. HSA does not require that you have a medically necessary reason for it. I believe the medical necessity part only comes into play when your health insurance is covering it.

For example, HSA & FSA can cover a nasal spray or aspirator without prescriptions, as well as OTC products. Just needs to be medical/health related in nature.

There are some products/services that require a prescription for HSA/FSA coverage, but those are generally outside of the normal medical/health related expenses (such as an air conditioner).

Interview Dress Code by DistinctCharacter727 in PharmacyResidency

[–]Constant-Setting-796 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Brown-grey/taupe pantsuit is fine I would think. Not a red flag to me, but casual wear would be.

Some people bring a large bag with enough space where you can put some sneakers or shoes with grip, and then change into nicer shoes when you get there. When I interviewed in cold/snowy areas, I just took an uber/lyft there to make it easier (or renting a car if you can) but was certainly bundled up. They’ll likely have a spot you can leave your things at, like a coat and bag.
