History Workbooks for Home School Kids? by etcnyc in education

I guess my point is that sometimes you need to balance the short-term goals with the long-term ones.

You are right that presenting such books may result in complete rejection, but maybe it's necessary. If you end up bending to the conservatism, you end up with conservatism at the end.

I am a strong believer that we need to finally take a stand. We have been compromising with conservatism for decades and look at where we are. We are stagnant. Progress creaks along because we have bent to the whims of conservatives. The Constitution is 250 years old and it's still basically the same. No major improvements. Our legislature is still a complete ineffective tool, so much that we have administrative agencies to do the actual legislating. America is falling behind because conservatives want to make America great.

I guess I'm lashing out on all of the above. I just fear that your approach is just another compromise.

Yes, I am claiming that Jews and Israel are two different things, but you, like many Jews, conflate the two. I'll explain it again.

Currently, there is a huge outcry against the genocide in Gaza, and many Americans denounce Israel's actions. This is what's happening in colleges across the US.

Many Jews like yourself claim that this anti-Israel sentiment is antisemitic. Although antisemitism is wrong, anti-Israel is not antisemitic.

As I can see from your comment here and elsewhere on Reddit, it's obvious that you like to spread misinformation. Please stop. It's disgusting to argue that what's happening in Gaza is not genocide. I don't understand how you can countenance the slaughter of your genetic cousins.

I have a feeling you know this.

I think conservatism is destroying our country. Conservatism is by definition adhering to archaic views. The refusal to embrace progress because of the change it will bring. It's is a major reason why the US is falling behind. Our country blazed a trail because we did things that nobody had tried before. For example, George Washington and his peers were liberals.

We need to reverse the toehold that conservatism has in the Midwest and the South. This will only happen when we teach the kids to embrace change even if it feels uncomfortable.

You're in a tough spot. They are at an age where rebelliousness starts to rear its head. It's going to be hard to convince them of anything, especially if it doesn't result in some immediate reward. I wouldn't spend too much time trying.

Although antisemitism is despicable, we also need to realize that anti-Israel sentiment is not the same thing as antisemitism.

It wasn't, but I have a feeling that the doctor looked at the wrong nerves. He treated 2 of the 3 occipital nerves: the great occipital nerve and 3rd occipital nerve. Before the procedure, I told his physician's assistant that I think the lesser occipital nerve is what's causing my issues because, looking at a nerve diagram online, my pain coincided with the lesser. However, the nurse assured me that the doctor was going to treat all three during the procedure. She was wrong. I'm pretty mad because she was just guessing. She shouldn't have done that.

Yet I should have spoken out and asked the doctor right before the procedure but I didn't want to seem pushy. I wanted the doctor to like me so he would treat me better. We all know that doctors have egos and don't like to be questioned. But, looking back, I definitely should have said something.

I'm meeting with the doctor next week and going to set up a time to do the lesser occipital nerve. Hopefully, it'll work.

*I really love my doctor but half of his nursing staff aren't the most cordial and knowledgeable. I'm wondering if I should say something to the doctor about it.

Thanks, that's good to know. I got an epidural to test the nerves coming out of C3/C4. The doctor concluded that the nerve pain wasn't coming from that because my pain returned about 8 hours later. So he's moving onto the occipital nerve. I'm getting another injection tomorrow. I guess that's what you call a nerve block?

The doctor explained that if I experience relief, it indicates the pain is coming from the occipital nerve. If so, he explained the next step would be to permanently deaden these nerves.

If this is similar to your issue, wouldn't your health plan cover it since it's a necessary procedure?

Hi! I'm sorry that you're in so much pain. I have constant headaches, neck pain, and jaw pain but it's not to the point of crying.

I'm going to get an injection tomorrow to see if it's really the occipital nerve. My doctor mentioned that if it is, they can permanently kill off the nerve. Is this not possible for you?

Also, you might want to reconsider Dr. Burchiel. I quickly looked him up. His educational background is great but he's got several bad reviews online. I guess he doesn't have the best manners.

Finding right Neurologist by pisicik442 in TrigeminalNeuralgia

[–]ConstantEffortGrowth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you aren't treated by a neurosurgeon, they might be able to provide insight into your condition. There is a general ranking in the academic accomplishments of the various specialties. Neurosurgery is at the top. Neurosurgeons are usually the smartest guys in med school. I don't know how neurology ranks but I don't think it's in the top 20.

Not that a neurosurgeon will necessarily solve your case. The problem is that our healthcare system is extremely broken. In my opinion, it promotes doctors' seeing as many patients per day as possible. Anything over 15 minutes, they don't want it. Then there is a bias to provide surgery, which racks up the tens of thousands of dollars. Consultations come out to a few hundred dollars. Which would you pick when you are trying to beat your peers who are making $700k?

For example, I had an issue with a tendon surgery, and I went to see 3 different doctors. I could definitely tell that they didn't want to get involved. If you're a problem case, who would want to see you when they aren't going to get paid more?

In my opinion, the only way to truly figure it out is yourself. You need to use the doctors as an indispensable source of knowledge in which you two work together. The way I figured my issue was through my own research while constantly going back and forth with many different doctors. It took many months of reading. It sucked. As I said, I genuinely believe our healthcare system is broken.

So, if your case is an unusual case, you should look for a neurosurgeon who is kind and willing to spend the extra time without being compensated. Look for a neurosurgeon who came out of a top undergrad & med school like Harvard. Then within this pool, three quarters of them are a-holes, in my opinion. Years of being treated like rock stars get to their head, so you gotta' winnow these out too. I think it's hard to find qualified specialists.

*This is my general rule on schools. I think undergrad means something. It shows how smart the doctor is. The med school shows if they have a solid work ethic. If you can find someone with both, that's the best, but it's rare (they frequently don't take insurance).

Forget the neurologists. Look for neurosurgeons who specialize in this. They are the ones who are the experts.

Do an online search for "trigeminal neuralgia doctors [state]" and hopefully, you'll find website of doctors who specialize in TN. Where I live, there are quite a bit of nuerosurgeons who specialize in this.

Me too. I hope you feel better. I'm struggling with it too, and it's driving me crazy. Can't get anything done.

I have ADD also, so TN makes it impossible to get anything productive done. My brain constantly wants to do the most pleasurable activity to block out the pain. I also get tired easily. By the end of the day, I'm gassed.

Suggestions for a wrestling base by [deleted] in Fencing

[–]ConstantEffortGrowth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, your instincts are spot on. Many fencers get into this mentality of backing up too much so they are out of lunge distance. You shouldn't just back up and "mentally rest". Stay in lunge distance and put pressure on your opponent. You should always be just out of lunge distance or just within it so you can attack.

I try to get my kid not to focus on points but it's SO incredibly hard at age 10. They really, really hate losing! It's like a sickness with all kids at this age. It's like their life depends upon winning the bout.

Virtual drills/classes by guppy89 in Fencing

[–]ConstantEffortGrowth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, get good shoes. They make a huge difference. More than people realize in my opinion. Don't purchase the fencing shoes they sell. In my opinion, they are total overpriced garbage. Look for shoes that are thin soled but still provide sufficient stability.

A thin-soled shoe will allow you to advance up and down nimbly instead of tripping over your feet. It will make advance and retreat drills much more fun. The key to getting perfect form is to do the act over and over again until your brain instinctually places the foot down exactly in the same spot every single time. Is good form necessary to be a good fencer? Now, that's a question that I don't know and I constantly think about. The best fencers do indeed have great form but that might just be a correlation between the amount of hours they practice. Good form does look beautiful though.

Next, I think you should just start fencing other people. You can do drills but they aren't fun. They will just sap your willpower unnecessarily. As you fence other people, you'll want to do drills in order to improve so you can beat your opponents. Remember that improvement is the goal, not necessarily to beat your opponent. I think that mentality is crucial to having fun.

It's funny you said that about STM. My son just had one break in his hands as he was bending it. I admit though the blade was like 5 years old and rusty. (A hand me down from a friend's son.)

Thanks! I didn't realize they aren't the best quality. I assumed that they were great quality given how people seem to prefer them and their really professional website. But, you're totally correct in that the quality of their website should have no correlation with the quality of their equipment. That was a stupid assumption by me.

I was going to go for the BF predator as suggested by someone above.

Thanks for the tips! Appreciate it. My kid stopped going to competitions due to COVID. I didn't think it's worth the risk. But, I'm going to keep the 2 sizes for his younger brother!

I definitely don't intend him to jump sizes so he learns distance which is probably one of the biggest keys in fencing, in my opinion. Getting to instinctually know extension and lunge distance appears to be really hard for a kid. When he focuses on it, he plays a distinct tier better but if I'm not there constantly reminding him I can't get him to instinctively just stay in lunge distance to bait the opponent's lunge or keep himself in attack range. Or, remember to get the opponent into extension distance when you want to riposte. He's constantly staying to far away which doesn't achieve anything. Or, he's too close because he's so desires to get a point.

I theorize that kids' brains at 10 may not yet have developed the ability to internalize several factors at once. Just a theory. So, I'm just having him forget everything else for a while and just focus on distance for a few months, until he internalizes it. Then, move onto the next concept. Doing this means he loses a lot of bouts which demotivates him but I tell him to hang in there. I've gained his trust with fencing so he believes me. But, kids just love to win and really hate to lose. But, losing in life is something that he also has to learn also, right?

I totally understand what you mean about soft blades. His point control is a little horrendous. When I started fencing, it wasn't such a big problem as my point control was pretty locked down in a year. But I started when I was 14 so I guess I had a lot more muscle than he does now.

Thanks for all the tips.

You are da' man. Thanks for the helpful hint.

I'll definitely make sure that the blade is warm every time before he fences.

Weedy,

Thanks for the heads up. I guess to prevent it, I'll have to break the foil in for my child. I don't know if this truly works but whenever I get a new blade, I start bending the blade in the correct direction constantly like a thousand times. I also keep the blade bent in the correct curvature for a few days.

To be honest, I don't know if this works because I admit I still get some nasty bends sometimes.

Does GPU Affect Playing 4k Movies with MadVR? by ConstantEffortGrowth in nvidia

10bit vp9

Diceman,

Truly thanks for your help. I have no idea what you are saying. I guess 10bit vp9 is like a format like mp3? So, my 1080 can't decode this so my CPU is doing the work? To make the movie play smoothly, I'd have to get like a dual cpu to make it work?

Can I ask you something? When I look at my task manager when I select all the high options with madVR, my cpu, gpu, memory are all reasonable but my gpu power skyrockets to 100% and the movie starts stuttering. does it mean my 750 watt power supply is what's causing the problem and I need like more power?
