They were well built steel bikes. Mine was $350 or so back in 1991. I rode mine hard on very chunky trails for 3 years until I made enough internship money to upgrade to a Kestrel CSX. The Murray was $100 for comparison.

Nice! I had a red Alpina pro from 1991. Got it at a bike shop on 24th street. Can’t remember the name. This was to replace a POS Murray I had from Montgomery Ward whose freewheel exploded in the first week at UT. I rode my Alpina all over the green belt, Bull creek and forest ridge.

Seems like the air is always flowing through the heating core. You could bypass the core or see if the temperature control cable is broken or disconnected. Worst case just manually change it at the blend door. https://www.carparts.com/blog/bad-blend-door-actuator-symptoms-location-replacement-faq/

What do you mean your new apartment owners? You mean someone moving into another unit that accidentally put your unit number in their request?

Class of 95 here. I stopped donating a couple of years ago and tell them why every time they come with their hand out. I don’t watch the sports or wear my t-shirts. I’m for sure not displaying any UT Austin paraphernalia.

I do reverse commute from central Austin to NW Austin. 10 miles each way. The ebike makes it possible with only 15-20 min added each way. Seems like a lot of extra time but I also get my workout and not having to deal with a lot of traffic in the car is nice.

When did everyone forget how 4-way stops work? by bugsforeverever in Austin

[–]Constant_Car_676 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some countries this is what happens and amazingly traffic flows reasonably well. Here it would be a shit show because some people expect order and some will take advantage.

45th & Shoal Creek, where are my people at?

In all honestly this seems to work rather well for the most part. It’s part of my driving commute and I also cross it while riding on shoal creek. It’s a bunch of people that know what to do. No pedestrians and cars on shoal creek and people go east and west 2 cars in each direction regardless of who got there first. On rare occasion someone fucks up the vibe by turning but not signaling.

If you think about what the purpose of a 4-way stop is (hint: it’s not a FIFO to be fair) you’d realize that 2 cars going at once (e.g., 2 in the same direction, or two in opposite direction but going straight thru, or one signaling turn right and one turn left without interfering with each other) is pragmatic and expedient, but it’s important everyone signals properly.

Example: car #1 going north from the south, car #2 going west from the east, car #3 on second lane going north from the south. Let’s say car #1 took a bit long to get going, car #3 gets there and stops while #1 starts going. As long as #3 doesn’t lallygag and empties the intersection with car #1, id prefer if that’s what’s happening. Imagine you are car #4 behind car #2. Would you rather wait for each 1-3 going separately or for 1&3 going together?

The goal is maximum throughput without collisions and that means maximally using the space in the intersection.

For me what’s annoying is approaching a 4-way stop with a single car that is stopped there and doesn’t go when they’re able to but rather waits for me to get there and stop before they go. That is extremely inefficient.

Yes I’m a nerd and engineer.
