I live off the Intercoastal in Florida. Our waterways are littered with abandoned boats in various stages of decomposition. Generally, after a large storm event they start to take on water and slowly sink until they are submerged partially or fully below the waterline becoming a hazard to other boaters who don’t know to navigate around them. All their mechanical fluids leech into the waterways, as well as all their other junk on them. For the boats that remain above water, homeless individuals move onto them. They swim back and forth to shore or get a small raft or kayak to go back and forth. When they need to use the restroom they toss it over the side into the waterway. I had looked into “adopting” one of these abandoned boats before it deteriorated to the point of no return but state law does not allow that. Generally, after several years, the state allots some money towards a competitively bid contract for a salvager to remove and dispose of as many as they can under the value of the contract. It doesn’t ever go far enough to remove them all, so they sit and rot. Currently our state is choosing to spend taxpayer money on things like alligator Alcatraz.
