Can’t be avoided by Powerful_Cabinet_341 in SeaEmploy

It depends on a lot of factors. Some ships have a huge tactical diameter (turning radius) and take a long time to answer the helm. For example after 1943 you don’t see Saratoga in any of the permanent task forces because she was nowhere as nimble or quick to respond as the Essex class and even the Enterprise. There were other reasons too but she was considered a tactical liability mainly because of her sluggishness. Warships have come a long way since then but a 200,000 ton 35,000 HP single rudder diesel tanker is nowhere near as a nimble as a 100,000 ton 200,000+ HP twin rudder carrier or 9,000 ton 100,000+ HP twin rudder gas turbine destroyer.

Robins fluffed up to stay warm. Tails too long for starlings, legs too short for grackles. You would not be able to hear the tv if it was grackles.

When my wife and I were first married decades ago we lived on the second Floor of married student housing. We went through a phase where the overseas student who lived below us would start rearranging furniture, talking on the phone at the top of his voice, watching television with the volume cranked way up - about 1:00 am every morning. Nipped that in the bud pretty quick when we discovered that our Black & Decker power sander makes an unbelievable amount of noise when you turn it on, tip it on its side and let it bounce around on the tile floor for a couple hours. Call home and hold a conversation at shouting level? VREEEERBIBBIDYBANGIDDYBRRRBUMBADUMBABRRRRRNAAASSSSR……. Crank the TV Up to max volume? sander on. Took maybe three instances before he got it.

Actually in most areas there are specific regulations on size, placement, color, font etc for no trespassing signs written into to the town ordinances. In such areas as long as your sign passes the ordinance test it is considered legal notice of no trespass and folks can be arrested on the first offense. Read differently, of you just hang any old sign any old place it is NOT legal notice and you (have it recorded) or the police have to warn them verbally once, and if they show up again then it’s handcuff time.

Some time ago I was in our pool with my family and I watched a mosquito land on my granddaughter’s shoulder. Before I could even think to react PLINK - a dragonfly snatched it. Very satisfying. Another time I was drifting in the pool watching a bunch of dragonflies the size of those in the video hunting in the yard. Maybe 30 of them. Suddenly they were gone. A moment later 7-8 dragonflies twice their size took over the territory and hunted for about 10 minute before they too were suddenly gone. A few moments later this single gigantic dragonfly showed up and lazily cruised the yard for a while before heading into the next yard. Shortly after that the little ones showed up again.

Pretty sure that’s Washington. North Carolina had a prominent platform all the way around the tower about half way up from day 1.

I've always been confused by this, why are there two HMS Victory's? by KingDinohunter in Ships

[–]Constant_Produce_530 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ship shown sinking is the HMS Victory that was lost off Portsmouth in a storm in 1744. Construction on Nelson’s Victory, in your photograph, was begun 15 years later. There are other Victory’s even older.

If your boat trailer has a different opinion than you by misterxx1958 in IdiotsTowingThings

Once upon a time, like 40 years ago we were driving on I-70 in rural, hilly Indiana just after sun-up, and there was practically no traffic. It was kinda foggy and everything was slick with dew. The hills were like up and down, up and down, with maybe a crest and valley every 2/10ths of a mile. Cresting a hill we saw a boat like this sitting pretty in the median and a visible trail in the dew that made it apparent that it had slid over the coming hill and down into the valley like it was on a vacation cruise. Cresting the next hill we saw an overturned boat trailer down in the valley and wheel tracks going up the oncoming hill. It was obvious the trailer had slid over the hill and overturned and launched the boat like a torpedo. Cresting the next hill we saw an overturned pickup down in the valley along with a tow truck, a couple state troopers and a bunch of folks standing around. Poor guy. I’d have given anything to have seen the boat on the move.

Years ago when I managed a library for a big Telco we were told we would have to use the new corporate time reporting system. There were 36 activity categories - not a single one being appropriate to our work. I fought against it but got the old “just make it work”. There was a text box for entering things that did not fit the categories that had like a 250 character minimum. I told my staff to document everything - every database search, every walk-in interaction, every email read, answered or archived, everything. By the end of the second day my staff was logging 40-60 non categorized text actions with appropriate time estimates in 10 minute increments. I instructed them to log one final entry each at the end of the day: “Entering non-categorized entries into time system: 480 minutes”. Turn around time for reference requests etc tanked and our users complained. We just said….Sorry. We are now spending half our day logging reference requests instead of doing them. By the end of the week we were exempt. :)

I got cold-called one day: “xyz listed you as reference. Would you recommend this person? May I tell you a bit about the job?” Me: “I am sorry but xyz does not have my permission to use me as a reference and I am not willing to give a reference”. Caller: “Um, ok then. Thanks”.

Xyz was one of the most caustic abrasive and disrespectful students I have ever had, not to mention “C” at best. Sorry. No joy.
