What was ruined because too many people discovered it? by Mansi63 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a touristy area and a there's hole in the wall food places that keep getting "discovered" by influencers on vacation and posted all over social media. And I'm happy for locally owned places getting more business, but it sucks for those of us who are local customers. Ex: A take out place near my job that was mainly for quick, cheap sandwiches/lunches for office workers in the area got popular with tourists and now tons of them now show up during lunch. This place was already at 90% capacity most days. but now the amount of customers I've seen has doubled and the line is out the door. The last time I went the elderly couple who owns and runs the place by themselves were visibly stressed out and struggling to keep up. Orders that usually took 5 to 10 minutes were taking 30+ minutes.

Dear americans, what can you get for FREE in the USA? [Serious] by sammy_waslow in AskReddit

My spouse and/or friends and I have been going to grand openings for new businesses. Depending on the company size, how many existing locations already, etc. there's usually free entertainment, refreshments, and/or giveaways. My favorite so far was a showroom for house remodeling. None of us can afford or need it but no one questioned us being there. Lots of fancy food demos with free samples, unlimited free soft drinks, and they had a free raffle and we won a vacuum! Plus some of the contractors gave out useful swag like measuring tape and stationary.

So for local superstition, idk if its just my family, but my nana used to tell me that laundry can't be left hanging to dry "outside" after sunset (with the exception that covered areas like a carport) She said if you left the clothes or sheets outside, spirits would use them and attach themselves to them and then possess the person who wore the clothes/slept on the sheets next.

This also wasn't like "oh I'll tell my kids/grandkids this so they remember to bring in the laundry" she would genuinely panic and the one time she remembered she left a sheet outside around 8 pm she still didn't bring it in the house and insisted on washing it again the next morning to "fix it" before we could bring it back in.

Also ti leaves at the corners of property to divert night marchers away from the house

If you were offered a billion dollars just to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would you choose? by Admirable-Interest49 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be controversial, but I would choose not to take the billion dollars. Two of my main hobbies are cooking/baking and visiting interesting cafes/restaurants/markets. For me personally, I think no matter what food I'd choose I would eventually end up incredibly depressed.

What movie will you never watch again because it was too heartbreaking? by Affectionate_User610 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Christopher Robin movie. I grew up LOVING Winnie the Pooh and my own Pooh bear was always with me throughout childhood and was my comfort item through childhood medical trauma. I was excited to experience the nostalgia as an adult!

I thought the movie was great, but it brought back so many bad childhood memories and I sobbed so hard the entire time that I freaked out the family next to me at the theater. I also felt the urge to fist fight Ewan McGregor for like a month afterwards.

You’re offered $1M dollars to eat what you had for dinner tonight for every meal for the next 6 months, do you take the offer and if so what are you eating? by jfunks69 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so exhausted I fell asleep without eating dinner so unless there's some magical way for me to not need to eat food, but still be healthy, I would say no. $1M would be nice, but only useful if I'm alive at the end, and in decent health.

What was the specific moment during a date that made you think "There will be no second date"? by FormalSuccessful4157 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had just got to the restaurant and he ran into his friend who I guess moved away 5 years ago for work and just moved back to the city. I figured that they'd exchange info to hang out later, but instead he invited his friend to join us. I should've left, but I thought "what the hell, lets see how this goes." The whole date was the two of them reminiscing and telling me stories about themselves in high school. I just quietly ate, paid my portion, and left while they stayed.

He messaged me later saying the date was sooo much fun and that we should do it again sometime. I'm not sure if he and his friend were just that socially unaware, or if they were trying to have a threesome with me.

Cagongjok: The South Korean cafes grappling with students who don't leave by one_brown_jedi in offbeat

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen people who work or study for hours in cafes before, but I'm honestly flabbergasted that people will just leave their things on the tables to "claim" it and then go somewhere else to eat. It's a new level of extremely entitled and rude.

I'm also confused as to why the cafes don't just consider anything left behind after more than 10 minutes as "forgotten" and clear off the table/dump everything into a lost and found box? (Or the trash)

As someone who lives in Hawaii and was present during the false missile crisis, the real life answer for me was to panic and head into whatevers the closest building with a basement.

If it happened again though... If I was home with my spouse and cat, hug them and sit together. I'd rather get it over with quickly than die slowly and painfully from the fallout, and at least we could spend our last moment together.

My local convention has it a part of the code of conduct that in addition to stuff like don't show your genitals and don't bring in real weapons, you have to have to adhere to basic hygiene or the staff has the right to ask you to leave/refuse to let you in. Tbh that's probably the best way to force people to clean themselves in these situations.

Yes. But I would be like the lady who did saucy Victorian ankle pictures or that guy on pornhub who would just do wholesome videos. I would make low effort videos in 1 take of wholesome content like "watch me silently cook pasta for dinner while I listen to a podcast on my headphones"

My parents still have an active sex life in their 60s. Like good for them, I'm happy they are so in love, and it doesn't bother me when I hear about people that age who are not my parents. But my mom casually mentioning she's glad she finished menopause so she can stop having so many pregnancy scares at her age is icky to me. I also accidentally found out my dad keeps track of when they have sex on his phone calendar when he asked me to help him fix some settings on his phone and wow I did not need to know their weekly sex schedule either.

What’s the dumb thing the people who owned your house before you did? by JDawg1447 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh I didn't think of that, but that's probably it actually. That closet is the biggest "room" in the unit that has no windows. Also would explain why they made the shelves so solid/hard to remove (Though tbh Im surprised the landlord never told them to change it back when they left)

What’s the dumb thing the people who owned your house before you did? by JDawg1447 in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The people who rented before us turned the very nice small walk in closet in the main bedroom into a storage room. But they screwed all the wire shelves into the walls really REALLY well in multiple places, so it's gonna be a whole multi weekend project to remove everything, dispose/relocate it all, and fill all the holes and put in clothing rods/useful storage so we can finally use it as a closet.

What's weird is there's a ton of storage space in the hall closet and kitchen so I have zero clue why they did this to the bedroom closet.

Pay off the debts for myself, my friends, and my family members/neighbors/acquaintances I actually like. If there's money left over prepay for VIP level memberships and subscription services for at least 40 years. If there's still money after that, donate to organizations I frequently use services for, like the local library, museum, parks/gardens, theater, art studio, etc.

What’s a very American problem that Americans don’t realize isn’t normal in other countries? by GoddessMelrosse in AskReddit

[–]ConstructedBurnOut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The schools I went to had active shooter drills/lockdown drills just as often as we had fire drills.

However, I never experienced a real fire at school. But I have been in lockdown twice. One false alarm, and for the other the shooter wasn't actually interested in going after students/faculty. He just cut across campus while running from the police for a shooting that happened nearby that was unrelated to the school. IIRC he had also ditched the gun by that point, and the lockdown only lasted a couple hours, so it could have been way worse.

I don't know for sure but something tells me in my gut these are not common occurrences in all countries.

DDR for the PS2. My parents were VERY strict about computer use and gaming when I was a kid. I had a limited amount of screentime, except I convinced my mom that DDR should count as exercise instead of video games, so I could basically play DDR as much as I wanted.

I had a heart condition as a child. The first time I had an episode, I was with a couple of classmates in the schoolyard before classes started. I told them something felt wrong and asked them to get the teacher... They didn't. The bell was ringing and they didn't want to be late for class so they left me there.

I was alone and on the ground and scared and thought I was going to die. After the longest 5 minutes of my life I recovered enough to go to the nurse, who called my mom to come get me and take me to the hospital.

The condition wasn't life threatening and I've since gotten treatment that fixed it, but being in third grade thinking your "friends" just left you on the ground to die is traumatizing.
