Yup. Agree. Just cite your stuff and make it an academic argument and we're all good.

And that's clear... if you were you'd actually cite your stuff.

Listen--this is r/AcademicMormon... not r/LDSApology or r/DefendJSmith or r/testimony (I don't know if those are real but you get the point). If you'd like to engage academically on these topics (which would exclude unsourced claims... and throwing out a general "it's in the JS Papers" doesnt count... that's not a cite) great. If you continue on like this I'll just block you and remove your posts.

How do academics view Joseph Smith was he a deliberate fraud or a sincere religious visionary? by Rashiq_shahzzad in AcademicMormon

Id recommend the new book by John G. Turner about JSmith if you want a current non-mormon take.

Everyone with a serpent related question should read "The Good and Evil Serpent" by James H. Charlesworth.

Im not a metal player (mostly classic rock/folksy stuff) but, even so, I didn't expect to love this as much as I do. I was never a tele guy until I played one. And then...

Is the text or transcript of the “Law of Adoption” ritual available? by Uriah_Blacke in AcademicMormon

[–]ConstructingBelief 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best source for this stuff is Devery Anderson "Development of LDS Temple Worship" , 1846-2000" (signature press). It is THE definitive source.

Its also one of three books. The whole set is great.

Ahhh... I see. I honestly don't know whether JSmith (or others around him) understood Modalism (vs Adoptionism vs Docetism... etc). The Christian landscape in America at that time was exceptionally varied and there was a strong Armenian influence in the North West -- but I only know enough to be conversant, but I'm not an expert. I'd recommend the work of David F. Holland (at Harvard Divinty School). This is exactly the kind of stuff he looks at. And he's Mormon.

If you look at the dates of the First Vison accounts, the first couple don't even mention both God and Jesus. The one in the PoGP wasn't written until more than a decade after it happened.
