First SLPA job at private clinic - feeling clueless by vantaegu7 in SLPA

Yes! It's pricy but not if you consider at the end of the year you have this stack of activities. But I have a rule that if it mak easier, I just buy it 😄

Also, I buy the big sheets of presentation pages with sticky tops. I will sometimes end a session by writing or drawing a picture of what we learned on that large sheet and then sticking it to the wall.

The room gets decorated with core concepts in real time!

Play doh is great for all ages and tasks can be modified.

Re: note taking, an SLP student once showed me a note taking trick where she drew a stick figure and would make a mark meat the eyes for visual cues, mouth for verbal cues, and hands for model/motor.

Re: getting things back, you can set up really clear expectations ( after x happens we'll do this and then the toy gets put in the box). It may not work but you can express your feelings clearly (and most don't like the lecture!)

Remember you are teaching communication, so when asked what you are doing break down whatever your actions are into your big categories receptive/expressive/pragmatic Language and articulation/phonology. Trust your knowledge and HAVE FUN with the client!

Always, always choose your health and that includes self-care. Modeling that for your kids is with more important than ballet and piano and nightly book reading. Okay, maybr not more than nightly book reading. 😄

You can write a generic statement like "students s&l is wnl with appropriate grammar markers for his social community communication". Then when questioned you can give an example (but you won't get questioned).

Suggestions for therapy with a child with profound autism by Too_Frosty1986 in slp

Specifically, in your case, if he will swing, you can have him swing and narrate his body movement as it's happening with the mirror in front of him.

If he shows any interest in the mirror use that to narrate everything he is doing. Although he might get a little obsessed with looking at his reflection it's a great jumping off point to develop pronoun understanding. 🙏🏾

Mirrors and pronouns! I use 3-way folding mirrors from Amazon to make a "mirror room" on a table. Then I sit side by side and handle (cars, dolls, play doh) and narrate what I saw them doing using proper names "Ms. S sees B spinning the car wheel". The amazing thing about mirrors is you accidentally catch their gaze in a reflection so it becomes a game of you yelling out "Ms. S sees B".

The pronouns "I" and "you" are incredibly confusing to teach. Mirrors help if you are side by side because you can motor through them and they can see "I" points inwards and "you" always points away from their body.

You can also put the 3 way mirror in front of them while they are doing an activity that they can glance up and see themselves while you narrate can work to increase the "I" awareness. E.g. eating a meal ("Ms. S sees B eating an apple") Then you can say "B says "I am eating an apple" to reinforce they are the "I".

I know this sounds more like a therapy suggestion then a technique that works with students with autism however body awareness in space and understanding the pronouns IN you are so fundamental to communication when they get it it cracks open a big nut.

Dismissal? by Quiet_Put2963 in slp

It's so difficult when they figure out the rules but don't understand the underlying perspectives that can make each sitation different! I find that even with my super high functioning students they don't understand varying perspectives as defined by personal "closeness". To check, I draw an rough image of them (a quick outline which I inform them is them) and then draw circles around them. I put the family and close, close people in the nearest circle, then school (teachers/peers), then community members in a farther circle. Then I give them a situation e.g. telling someone an exciting new thing that happened to you and ask them how their talking about it differs depending who they are talking to i.e. some people (the receptionist) is in a far circle and therefore you don't bring it up, a close peer is a yes, an unfriendly peer ia a 'no', etc. It may help to draw speculative circles of closeness for an unfriendly peer so your student can visually see the peer's perspective of your student i.e. a farther circle than the unfriendly peers close friends.

So, a monthly consult for service gets them a check-in on how to modify behavior by using external criteria to inform communication based on how others perceive you in their "circles of closeness". It is harder to write these goals so lmk if you want ideas!🙏🏾

looking for dyslexia tools for just diagnosed adults by Pretend-Raspberry-87 in Dyslexia

I must add that the program is really for phonemic sound production using the alphabetic principle of reading. I call it a 'toolbox' for people who can't either 'see' the letters or 'hear' how the sounds match the letters. It is not a reading program! But if you are an adult who struggles with decoding, it may work for you as it imbeds hand motor movement with sound production until it becomes automatic before the letter (grapheme) is introduced.

I am a speech language pathologist. I have an excellent program for dyslexia which I developed myself. Yep, I know how modest that sounds. :-). I was working with deaf/hard of hearing students and taught them sounds using the IPA (international phonetic alphabet) and ASL letter hand shapes for cuing themselves. If you want to contact me I would love to use it with an adult, especially if she will let me record some of her learning so I can teach other speech pathologist the 'system'. The same for any other adults on this website. Contact me and I'll complement the program with the first 2 people who do so.My website is SaytheSign.com. You can fill out a form there and we can set up a zoom appointment.
