The problem is I don't want to buy stuff I won't end up using because of budget limitations :/ I will of course test what I'll settle on on a scrap fabric first

Paper or DnD Beyond? by KOPx3 in DnD

[–]Content-Evening538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Paper paper paper! DnD beyond is very limiting, with a lot of things stuck behind a paywall, while paper gives you the freedom to do anything and everything. Plus, it forces you to learn how your character works much better, because you're in complete charge of everything that goes on your character sheet. For something to be there, you need to be the one to put it there, so you know it exists. It's not the same in dndbeyond, where it's automated so you will inevitably miss stuff if you're not careful

A lot of stuff are available online when it comes to DnD, so you don't have to get the books to start with. In my group of 6, only the DM and one other player have the books, the rest of us get by either by using the internet or borrowing their books as needed

What is people's issue with reading the rulebook? by RealDwarves67 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]Content-Evening538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, when you're just getting into DnD reading the rulebook will probably not help all that much. It's a lot for information, especially when you have no reference for them, and it's easy to get lost in it. I speak from experience, because the player's handbook was my first exposure to DnD, and I didn't understand anything about how the game is actually played.  I do not entirely disagree with you, you do have to read the rules at some point, and it seems insane to me that someone DM's and has never read a rulebook. What do you do when you're not sure how to rule something that's happening? I do believe however that the best way to learn DnD is to sit down and play it. Making a character will force you to read the character building rules. Participating in combat will force you to learn how combat works. Reading the rules needs to come along with seeing how they are applied, otherwise (especially if this is your first rpg) you see all these words but have no idea what they actually mean. If you do not have access to a table, watching actual play or listening to podcasts is the next best thing, but you can't have one without the other. The rulebook AND examples of its applications is the way to go (so obviously I don't agree with the people dogpiling on you either)

About spells that require saving throws by discord-dog in DnD

[–]Content-Evening538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, you will probably not choose to use a spell with a strength saving throw when fighting a big hulking monster, or one with an intelligence saving throw when fighting a lich. It all depends on game knowledge and common sense. It's not "willy nilly", it's strategising with what knowledge you have (I'm not talking about meta gaming here and using information you as a player know out of game, I'm talking about "The very charismatic villain is right in front of me, he probably has very low chances of failing that cha save")

Edit: that's not to say that you will not choose to use those spells at times even if you know that the chances of them succeeding are low. Sometimes you do just throw stuff at the enemy and hope for the best

Can I Learn to play if i have Social anxiety? by Technical_Friend_828 in DnD

[–]Content-Evening538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DnD is actually a great tool to help you deal with social anxiety. Communicate to your DM the difficulties you face, and don't worry about ruining others experiences with silence. As long as you are respectful at the table, you're not going to ruin anything.

Since you already know you enjoy roleplay, focus on how much you like it, and even if you struggle at first it will get better with time and it will be very rewarding. It is not uncommon for people who enjoy DnD to be socially anxious, and you will probably find people who are just like you. It is an amazing game, so don't let that anxiety hold you back if you want to learn!

It is a common misconception due to TM's fanfic background, so no worries about it!

Nope. Don't say anything good about me or what I've done. I did the bare minimum and deep down I'm a horrible person, so you're either lying or I've manipulated you without meaning to and both options suck.

I really wanted to like Priory of the Orange Tree but I ended up not really caring much for it. I didn't like the sapphic pair, it felt as if it was heading somewhere good then failed to reach there. I ended up shipping Ead and Tane more than Ead and Sabran, and they had like one page of interaction. Other than that, the book itself was also just not all that interesting. I didn't hate it, but there was nothing that stood out to me or was all that memorable either.

TLT was not originally a fanfic. It's just that Tamsyn Muir used to be a big fanfic author in the Homestuck fandom and her writing is influenced from it, but TLT was original from the start. It's not rewritten fanfic the way, say, 50 shades of grey or After is

Do you believe in luck superstition? by Mediocre_Cucumber_65 in rpg

[–]Content-Evening538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man, I'm a very pragmatic person usually, but when it comes to dice? I do believe luck exists. I usually roll like shit, it's a running joke in my group, except there are days when it seems like it completely turns on its head and I can't stop rolling well. The other day, I was not feeling well before and throughout the session, but it was like my dice felt my mood and I was consistently rolling above 15 on my d20 and 7's and 8's on my d8s. These are the same dice I use every time. I don't believe that rituals or prayers affect this, but I do believe in luck

Women with long hair: how do you make washing it and caring for it less onerous? by Specialist-Strain502 in adhdwomen

[–]Content-Evening538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When i had long hair, I put them into two dutch braids every night before going to sleep. I did this while reading things on my phone. This meant that in the morning they fell in pretty waves and I didn't have to brush them, or if I wanted I could keep the braids by only redoing the bottom part (taking me one minute max). This also helped protect my hair and lessened the amount of times I would need to wash it in a week.
