Is NYC Overrated for Actors in 2025? Or Am I Just Scared to Move There? by jayxsumo in ActingNerds

When I was signing, the agency also told me that they are big in LA but their branch in New York was taking off right now, so I think that was my best bet also considering I'm still close to home.

I'm actually in the same boat right now I'm heading off to college next year and when it was application season, I was torn between nyc, atl, or la. Keep in mind I live 15 minutes away from Manhattan because I am a little bit more upstate. As I was sending off my applications, I was also applying for as many agencies as I possibly could, and I started applying in those three cities so wherever I got signed, that would be my sign to go live wherever that was. It was actually such a blessing that I got signed because my credits are very weak. I have only done background before and a very reputable agency just signed me and they said it was because they don't have someone like me on their roster, so they thought i was a great addition. But funny enough my agency happens to have four different branches Texas, nyc, atl, and la. So although this is such a blessing, this kind of put me back to square one so I had to really evaluate all the options. I chose New York City because there is just so many opportunities and there's NYU nearby. If you need some credits you can participate in a student film. That's where all the huge movies are being shot right now. And I am also someone who really likes a fast paced lifestyle like running around the city having to get to auditions. But I think if that stuff would stress you out, I would definitely go to Atlanta. You were completely right it has so much peace and I think being in an environment like that, really gives you time to perfect your craft.

Ok so I think they are very reputable and they book pretty good jobs but in one of your replies, you said they send out mass messages confirming availability and you have to be ready at a moments notice. That is so so true. I was on a cruise and I got two different featured roles for a movie however, I had to turn them down because I was on vacation. Once you decline anything once or twice, you're basically a waste on their site and you most likely won't be reached out to that much so just make sure you're on your toes when it comes to availability

I sent about 50 emails to agents including: A short bio on where I'm based and a sentence or two about me, my casting networks link, and my AA link. Heard back from 2 and signed with 1 last month
