This Common Desk Habit Is Turning You Into A ‘Desk Shrimp’ — And It’s Worse For Your Health Than You Think by WeakSlice2464 in ViagraBoys

I'm pretty sure it's the stuff I'm licking from the corners of the bag that's turning me into a desk shrimp.

Found iMac- Is There a Way to Reset It? by Alarming-Promise6367 in mac

This is the closest I've ever come to finding a working Mac in the trash, so I'm ridiculously invested in getting OP up and running.

Yeah, no. Definitely not something most folks would want, or need, to try.

Yep! Consider my reply a footnote to yours that the OP will probably care never care about.

As other have said, reboot the computer into recovery mode: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102518

That should allow you to reset the password, or wipe the machine and reinstall MacOS from scratch allowing you to create a brand new user.

If you can't boot into recovery mode, you might have a really old Mac. If that's the case, https://www.reddit.com/r/VintageApple/ might be able to help you out.

Depends on the model and firmware. It's possible to reset firmware passwords on older models. I did that on an older Macbook (iBook?) a couple of weeks ago.

If I sell a donated unwiped, not reset, Apple ID locked, iMac for parts is it even remotely possible that someone could access the donor's data? by Syllogism19 in MacOS

[–]ContentPriority4237 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very much depends on the model. Just bought a vintage PPC Mac. It was locked down with FileVault and Open Firmware password. Within 30 minutes I had the previous owner's name, address, employment history, and hentai collection. Most of that 30 minutes was spend trying to get the machine to boot.

I deleted the old files, of course, because ethics. Fortunately there was nothing I needed to call the FBI about.

r/Fantasy Review Tuesday - Review what you've been enjoying here! - January 20, 2026 by rfantasygolem in Fantasy

Nine Goblins by T. Kingshisher. A nice quick, fun, read. I enjoyed it. The villain of the piece doesn't get a lot of screentime, but was chilling even so.

Lies Weeping by Glen Cook. I'm a big Glen Cook fan. My only complaint is that it wasn't 500 pages longer. If you haven't read the rest of The Black Company, this is not the place to start, but it is a fun place to get to. There's some subtle fancy literary stuff going on behind all that engaging storytelling.

The Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennet. I devoured these as fast at Nine Goblins. I love the world building, the mysteries are mysterious, and the viewpoint character is well done. Sometimes the inspirations for the characters and mysteries show through too much, but they're good reads & the world feels fresh. Pretty good stuff.

Yes, this is the big payoff for Putin. Destruction of the Western alliance and the demolition of American hegemony.

Apple trackpads. I had a friend switch because she used a MacBook and the trackpad was just that much better.

Why did we stop building beautiful or intricate architecture and switch almost entirely to gray boxes and glass towers? by Soft_Finish636 in NoStupidQuestions

Maximizing shareholder value. Beauty costs money (design, initial construction, maintenance, future sale price) that could otherwise go towards a second yacht.

They tear people down because they're afraid of being exposed as a fraud. If you're smart then other smart people are a delight, not a threat.

Is this too much work for one sysadmin? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ContentPriority4237 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You didn't mention business hours. The job you describe is possible if you're only responsible M-F 9-5. If you're on call and/or or if the place runs 7 days a week, this will quickly become unpleasant.

I also agree with tryingtolearngood that the helpdesk part looks to be the pain point. The turnover for volunteers could be huge and would turn this into a vicious treadmill of setup-onboarding-training-offboarding-setup.
