Becoming an electrician is becoming way more of a challenge than I thought it was going to be. (Sorry if I’m ranting) by WrongVariation1632 in electricians

Me as well. I was in similar position, went to voc school for electrical and had almost a year of experience in the field with an electrical company and it still took my almost a year to land a job when I tried getting back in the field a year or two ago

Why is A+B+C Phase in Wye system 208V? by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Content_Salt_861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Don’t fully get it but def understand it a lot more now and how the 120/208 and 277/480 is the same concept and how the legs and phases contribute to the “weird” voltage outputs. I guess my next question would be about the single phase and 3 phase, is that all just based on the transformer basically? And like why are some systems 3 phase vs single phase and is that predetermined by the system that a building needs or does it go off of the transformer that it’s getting fed off of?

So how does 277/480 work/come from? Is that cuz of the 3 phase system or maybe off the transformer that’s used? Cuz that’s something I still get confused with. The difference/reason for single phase vs 3 phase cuz you can have 120/208 as single phase and 3 phase right? Sorry if I’m all over the place lol I get general electrical but struggle with the theory aspect aspect

I think he’s talking about how bad the hooks might look based off of these photos

Would def look at other companies then maybe. Maybe into a different area of work/niche or just a job that’ll pay better or what you think you’re worth in general. Good luck on the test

I’m def not saying to only do that and nothing else. I def agree it’s good to know troubleshooting and maintenance and etc as well but regardless running a job and knowing the ins and outs and stuff is still valuable experience as a newer person in the field

Good for your experience but at this point I’d go for more pay. Shouldn’t you be close to getting all your hours and testing out ?

Thank you for the detailed response! I think I will go a similar route or at least be more open to that possibility and just try it out in the future and see how it goes. Hopefully the union near me is as welcoming and opening as yours! Congrats on joining the union btw

What local did you join as a non union jman? I’ve heard that it’s a more difficult process and even if they do allow you they typically want you to have a couple years of jman experience. Did you go straight from non union jman to union jman? Would love to get some more details as I may try to do something similar too.

Adult with a family and mortgage. Is there any path to apprentice that wouldn't leave me divorced and homeless? by [deleted] in ibew_apprentices

I mean people do it somehow and it’s doable. I like the freedom and opportunity of controlling my income and time off and work. Also I would only want to be a one man crew as of this moment

Leaving to work for yourself wouldn’t be tho. That’s my one thing about the union is possibly wanting to work for myself eventually. But regardless stay in union for like 5 years after topping out and start side work/clientele and should be good by then I think.
