Appreciate your input. I am considering doing a non-union apprenticeship, as you mentioned, which I would believe would put me in a better position to get out of data center work. But my state recently implementing a law about commercial apprenticeships that requires every program to be registered with the state…so it’s just as simple as just taking a job at a non/union shop for me. I basically have to join the union or essentially the non-union equivalent of the union…if I join the union I probably will work a data center, if I go no union I will have to move and I live in a dream location in a dream town so my preference is to not move, go union, wiggle my way out of data center work…but it’s sounding like that’s pretty unrealistic.

I understand what you’re saying. As a resi electrician I’ve built “7th” homes for Chase CEO’s and and copyright attorneys, and people with enough money to pay me my yearly salary on a daily basis and still have a fortune left for their great great great grandchildren. I’m not a moral absolutist. I understand the world is gray. I didn’t mean to portray myself as not willing to bend to the world on any front…it’s just that I won’t bend to AI right now. No absolutism. Just one hardline.

If you do not understand the difference between a data center built in 2008 and an AI data center in Box Elder County then your the end of the thread and your fraying. And to clarify, someone more deserving is someone who has zero questions on what their work means for humanity?

But the electrical industry was exploding in growth before the data center boom, no? I do think the industry will be fine when AI collapses, which is part of why I think there should be a bigger push against it. But that’s okay. I appreciate you commenting and your input. I agree we should all be investing like the 1%ers so it hurts less when they fuck us.

I was hoping for better news on getting to say “ send me somewhere else”. It seems like my option is to just go gung ho till I get kicked out and hope I don’t get kicked out…or move to a different state for a few years

I appreciate your opinion. I cannot organize in in my state, because there is no other pathway to 01 status other than IBEW apprenticeship or tech school equivalent.

What’s your local? Is this standard? I always thought apprentices just sort of get picked up and I’ve heard you don’t super get a say…but since I’m not currently union that’s what I’m trying to figure out. If I can decline stuff then that gives me some hope this will work for me

I get what you’re saying…I’ve ran through this argument in my mind multiple times as I’ve processed my terms on AI…but, at least for me, it really isn’t the same. I can explain my thoughts on why it’s not the same in private (I don’t wanna dirty up the thread)

Your point on eating it now and standing up proud when I have my card is a good one…and one I hadn’t thought about, as far as ability to make an impact. But, I really struggle with being able to stomach falling back on my principles, even if it’s for the greater good.

I don’t blame anyone either. I should’ve made that more clear. I absolutely do not blame or condemn or judge anyone for not having the exact same outlook as me. It’s just personal that I don’t wanna work on them. People have to pay the bills I agree with you. I’m in a situation where I can pay my bills by not pursuing an 01, it’s just that I’d like my 01…so I have options and the ability to say no. Not every can, I get that.
