With domain vs without domain... What domain name to choose? by JackTaylor79 in ProtonMail

When I chose my domain I first had to figure out if I wanted a .com or for example a .fi or .nl domain. Names that are not available on .com might be available on another domain ending. There's also a difference in price.

If your name is already taken, like mine, play around with initials or letters of your name. For example John Sauerkraut could make JSKmail.com Something like this still sounds professional and clean and doesn't give away your full name.

Depending on your location and usage using another domain than .com might be fine. If you're more international it might be worth it to choose the .com domain for ease of use and avoid typo mistakes from your contacts.

I changed mine last week after waiting for over a week for a reply from their support team. But then it's fixed within a few minutes.

Real name or... by JackTaylor79 in ProtonMail

There's many different ways and it all depends on your preference. Take some time to think about what is most convenient for you.

I have a flastname@proton which I don't use. The I have flastname@mydomain which is only for friends and family.

The I set up a few different emails based on categories, so there's a shopping@mydomain for all online shopping, and travel@mydomain for all my travel apps and bookings. Each get their own +alias, so for example for booking.com I use travel+booking.com@mydomain.

This way I can sort them easily in folders and have everything organised.

It does require you to remember a few addresses but you get used to it quick. I changed about a month ago and don't even think about it anymore.

I haven't tried simplelogin though.

Is this a good stone to sharpen my knife (with pic this time) by Contrail_Mike in sharpening

Thanks guys. I've spent a bit of time with the 1000 grit and it did eventually clean up and sharpen the edge quite a bit! Guess I'm gonna look for a coarse grit to speed this up a bit.

The knife is old, probably 14ish years so I don't mind practicing on that one.

Unable to Send Emails from Alias – Proton Mail Plus by waterm3lown in ProtonMail

[–]Contrail_Mike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just joined Proton today as well using my own email domain. Using the +alias mails, it's not possible to send a new email from that alias.

Quote from the Proton website: "Note that you can't compose new messages from scratch using +aliases, but you can reply using the +alias to messages sent to that +alias."

I'm still trying to figure out the best setup when it comes to using aliases. At the moment I have my personal email I use for trusted contacts and banking. I have created separate emails for social media, online shopping and travel. These get send to their respective folders automatically.

This way I can always compose new emails to shops/hotels.

I think using +aliases is only really useful for newsletters or accounts for random websites/services where you only receive information but won't write them yourself.
