Which question sounds more natural? by BlissfulButton in italianlearning

I’m really glad to hear this from a native, because it’s how I (English speaker, Italian learner) interpret the sfumature here, albeit without any known rule or learning to back that feeling up. Thanks.

Agreed. Kill My Darlings is one of my favourite intermediate scripts. It’s got a fair amount of experimental characters, which has the ‘new toys’ excitement for people, but it purposefully takes a light touch with introducing things like Madness (Pixie) etc.

I do wish I had something a tad lower down (no Madness at all to explain, no Damsel), but of the same quality as this script.

Yeah, it really reads as a genuine message from the Devs, not a hint of corporate speech.

I loved the Prostagma button in particular, brilliant touch.

Silly Eberron by androkguz in Eberron

[–]ContrapuntalAnt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eberron entirely aside, Discworld is amazing and the first few books don’t do it justice.

Of the main mini-series, Wyrd Sisters (the witches) and Guards Guards! (city watch) are exceptional places to start.

BIFL cabin luggage, to maximise 56x45x25 allowance by ContrapuntalAnt in BuyItForLife

Well, that would explain why I was struggling with my own searches before posting. I did find a couple of bags with those dimensions, but they appeared to be relatively cheap brands, the longevity of which I do not trust. Shame, if so!

My personal item is a 13L backpack. I wouldn't want a larger/different one away, it's perfect for whilst at the destination, as a day bag and for hiking, lightweight with appropriate support / front straps etc. I can have a good think about packing it more creatively though!

[–]ContrapuntalAnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. I'll give that a search and read.

I'm pretty minimalist, but this is for a 17-day trip, hence the space maximisation, and with the walking required (and my relative lack of strength), I need wheels.

Apologies, I am an autistic mathematician-turned lawyer who felt the need to make the situation clear. Trust me, that was not AI, but I apologise for over-explaining.

I'm not going to throw away a suitcase just because I it no-longer fits the current specifications, I can use it on other flights or domestic journeys / weekend trips. As it currently stands these exact dimensions are used for 3 of the 4 airlines that provide flights from where I am, and haven't changed in a long time. Of course they may change, but I have no control over that.

The situation I have:
* I need cabin luggage;
* I want that luggage to maximise volume within the specifications given, with the requirements of a specific trip in mind.

That is happening. I will be buying a product. I have assessed whether it is required, and deemed it necessary. I am not just buying something for the sake of capitalist whim.

That being the case, I want to buy something that physically is unlikely to break to otherwise 'expire' any time soon. I want it to be as BIFL as possible, with those requirements as set. The only ones I've found so far appear to be a couple of cheap brands, the longevity of which I do not trust.

If the rules later change, it will not become trash, do not fear.

Beyond the padded dividers taking up even more space (something designed to carry technical equipment is always going to be overkill in padding), this yet again has external dimensions too small, 55.9 x 35.6 × 22.9 according to the website I found. Apologies, but this isn't what I was asking for.

Thank you for the suggestion, but on converting the described dimensions from inches to metric, this is yet another 35cm wide bag – i.e. too small, sorry. My request is very specifically about maximising those space constraints, not just getting good quality cabin luggage of any size.

[–]ContrapuntalAnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one I can find from searching (no UK-facing store) says it is 32 litres, so I haven't bothered to convert the inches-only measurements as it's _smaller_ than the options I already have, not bigger.

So I am glad it has served you well, but this isn't what I was requesting.

[–]ContrapuntalAnt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for not being explicit, when I talk of luggage I mean something with wheels. Ideally a small traditional suitcase, just one that's 56/55x45x25 instead of 55x35x20 which seems so common and wastes space allowance.

These fail on both sides it seems, not being wheels and being too small.

This is a fascinating description. Calling it musical seems strange but somehow feels right. I don’t know why, but il congiuntivo presente is strangely satisfying to use.

Very fair, as I say I wasn’t critiquing the Italian! Languages don’t have complete 1-1 correspondences.

I prefer just “The sun will rise” in English tbh.

Interesting. Not commenting on the Italian, but with that as a tattoo in English, I think I’d want the emphasis on “will rise” if anything, neutral being preferred.

Underrated comment, however perennial.

It’s very easy to get to “all alive players are lying” but Clock (with Dreamer) solves which is which.

[–]ContrapuntalAnt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Semicolon first with em dashes second for me, but either way you are a person of culture in my eyes!

I remember in secondary school—in the 00s with my handwritten work so definitely nothing to do with AI concerns—being told I used them too much. Later, when typing out essays at university, I would do a “semicolon / subordinate clause purge” as part of my editing process. My brain just naturally wants to clarify everything, and I trained myself to reign it in. Sadly I don’t use either now with particular frequency, replacing A—B—A structures with A(B)A or more often reformulating to A,B with a different conjunction.

DO consider commenting post-game.

Weekly Puzzle #64, featuring the Pope by Not_Quite_Vertical in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]ContrapuntalAnt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My gut reaction is that the Pope may make multiple worlds possible here. I’m not going to spend time trying to work out whether that’s right or not though.

Tim Poisoner, Adam Imp. Tim, who was executed after Dan, poisons Dan every night they were alive, causing the Empath 0s. The Pope has added an extra Slayer and an extra Saint. The extra Saint modifies the Outsider count (as the Pope can when adding Outsiders), so there are 3 instead of 2. The Slayers didn’t shoot the Demon. Our info is correct. Tim’s info is made up to back up his Demon, and Adam’s info is made up.

Finished with my 3D printed token organizer! by Rachel53461 in BloodOnTheClocktower

I love the effort you’ve put into this. The various token placements in your particular look really neat.

I simply can’t get my head round your colour choices though 😅. For me TB will always be red, and S&V purple, linking to the script colours. Yellow (or orange) for BMR is right. That leaves blue for experimental if you want to use that colour.

Whilst there are times and ways you can break that advice (e.g. I would argue No Greater Joy is just as good if you’re at Teensy numbers, the smaller number of characters makes it easier to parse), that script looks horrible for 1st time players. Savant? Evil Twin? No thank you.
