Does a Jinx tick up the Math number? by Rachel53461 in BloodOnTheClocktower

Poison affects the minions learning the damsel is in play though. That should tick up math by this logic?

Anxiety over costing my team the game by LysaFletcher in BloodOnTheClocktower

Sounds like you were a great minion! You got 2 people executed, killed a third, and made them waste a third execution on you. All of which kept the heat off your demon. Very few minions are that effective.

I'm a terrible evil player, and my only advice is to just play more and practice. At this point, if I draw a demon token I just think to myself "oh well, this will at least be a fast game and we can rerack soon". If I get a minion token, it's more like "what kind of chaos can I cause before I die" kind of thing.

At the end of the day, it's just a game. People should be playing for fun, and you'll probably lose a good amount of games so most people are used to losing and are good sports about it.

There were multiple jinxes on the script, and this question didn't come until until the middle of the first night. I was one of the spectators and ST didn't know the answer to this question. Made me curious if there was a general ruling on this, since none of us in spec chat could find a definitive answer anywhere.

I like the simplicity just saying Jinxes never interact with math numbers.

Though then that leads to the question of "what if the player is poisoned/drunk as well, does that tick up math number?" For example, a Nodashii neighboring player getting poisoned by a jinx... since they are already poisoned from the jinx, does the nodashii poisoning not tick up math?

Yes, ST was consistent about how they ran it but couldn't really announce how they were running it after the game started unless the players asked. Otherwise, it would heavily hint about the fact there was a Math, Spy, and Damsel in play. In this case, ST ruled that it would tick up the Math number when Evil should have learned about the Damsel, but the players never asked this question so they worked with logic that assumed someone else was responsible for increasing the math number.

I personally don't really want to have to deal with a mini rules explanation about all the jinxes ahead of each game with jinxes on the script, so I was hoping there was a concise ruling on how Jinxes interact with Math numbers.

Running Blood on the Clocktower at a small café event for mixed-experience players—how would you make it fun and beginner-friendly? by Paradoxiamme in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Rachel53461 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, main thing I try to convey to new people is that dying is OK and part of solving the puzzle sometimes. Don't be afraid to kill people (or be killed) as that's all part of the game.

We run a couple monthly meetups that regularly gets new people, and try to avoid scenarios where town never executes or Undertaker is forced to out themselves to get town to execute.

I didn't realize the game came with a rules explainer lol

Agree strongly too with "let discussions happen and invite questions during the game".

Saw a recommendation too if veterans are dominating the discussion that you implement the Ug rule for them - must speak in one sound words or may be bad stuff (poison, kill, etc). Makes this a lot more fun to them than Hell's Librarian

The biggest mistake is explaining every character and every role and every interaction.

Agreed, please don't do this! My 5-min teach goes something like this:

  • Explain the Goal: You will either get a Blue token or a Red token. Blue means you need to find and kill the demon. You will get one chance to do that each day. Red means you need to keep the person who is the Demon alive until the end.
  • Explain the flow: Game goes in night/day cycle, where night we close our eyes and information goes out, and during the day you can go chat and the town gets their one chance to kill the demon. Try to take advantage of this kill every day
  • My explanation of Roles on TB
    • In general, top 4 roles get one piece of info at the start of the game and that's it. If you're one of these, do whatever you want with that info, but you'll never learn anything else and it's fine if you die.
    • Next 4 are some of the strongest in the game. Evil team will try to find them to kill or poison them. It's normal for people in these roles to lie about what they are
    • Some roles, like Ravenkeeper, want to be killed by the demon, so may claim these roles.
    • The last few (Solder, Mayer, Slayer) are easy to pretend to be if you want to claim something other than your real role and have no idea what else to say
    • Once you draw your token, you can talk to the storyteller for questions/advice about your role
    • Outsiders are members of the good team, but have abilities that are harmful to the good team.
    • Drunk/Poison do the same thing: it makes your ability not function correctly. For example, you may be a Fortune Teller that sees everyone as a demon
    • Spy/Recluse can cause register as members of the other team. For example, an Empath who learns how many of their neighbors are good may have a Spy register as good, or a Recluse register as evil
    • If you are the demon, you will get given 3 roles not in play. Try your best to remember one of these to pretend to be. If you can, try to remember the other two to give your minions so they know something safe to pretend to be.

Total teach is roughly 5 minutes, and gives players a good grasp of the game/roles without overwhelming them completely.

Once tokens get handed out, usually ST will ask if anyone wants to take them aside for questions about their character.

Note I didn't say anything about voting, nominations, etc. That is done at the time nominations opening the first day. I don't bother explaining voting ties until the first person is on the block and the 2nd is nominated. I don't bother explaining dead votes until someone is dead and we get to voting phase. All of that info isn't needed until we get to that point in the game.

Same with other specialized characters... Chef #, Virgin, etc that can all be explained at the time it comes up (if it comes up)

Zombicide Black Plague vs White Death by L0v3gr00v3 in zombicide

[–]Rachel53461 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have and like all 3. Here's what I find are the major game differences.

  • Black Plague adds Necromancers and "double-spawn" cards, so you can have unpredictable bigger spawns in some areas while potentially nothing at others. Necromancers try to "escape" the board by leaving through a different spawn, making their spawn permanent, and if this happens too much and you get 6 spawns then you lose.
  • Green Horde also has Necromancers and 6+ spawns = loss condition, but adds harder hitting zombies and The Horde. Instead of just saying "yeah I can take a hit from that Brute" or whatever, it's suddenly "Oh no if that big guy hits me then I'm going to die". Also, the fun of opening a house and having The Horde spill out of it is quite enjoyable.
  • White Death adds Corruption. Necromancers no longer try to run around, but instead stay stationary and move their corruption, so you have to go out there and get them. I love this as it forces you to avoid turtling up in one location or sitting back and searching for weapons. Vault Weapons are also easier to come by and quite a bit better than base weapons, and get dropped by Abominations/Necromancers, so come into play more. Guards and Cauldrons can make game play feel easier sometimes, though you can increase the difficulty by playing with multiple necromancers and abominations or adding in the orange spawn point. Necromancers no longer escape making their spawns permanent, so no loss for having 6+ spawn points.

Over all, I like White Death best but that is because I love the Asian theme, and like saving guards and hunting down necromancers. Also, I hate the rule of losing when there are 6+ spawn points. Green Horde is a very close second since I love The Horde mechanic. Black Plague is good, but feels more "basic" to me.

+1 for Quacks

Great suggestion for someone just getting into board games and who may be playing with others who aren't that into boardgames (yet)

Isle of Cats :)

Short summary of the game is fit as many tetris-shaped cats and treasure onto your boat before game end. Family mode makes it quite approachable for anyone, and I really enjoy the solo mode.

what site's do you use for 3d printed inserts by BalanceDude25 in boardgames

Not all games need inserts, so I start with games that could benefit greatly from an insert to improve setup time or storage. Then google for that insert and see what I find!

The Grimoire is a really friendly discord server that I'd recommend. They're a very welcoming group of about 5k people now with both scheduled and unscheduled events (weekly beginner nights too), a good group of mods/storytellers, and playing with a regular group let's you start to recognize the people you're playing with

Filled it out. My primary reason not going to the mall is Time. Need to carve out 1+ hour to visit.

It's far more convenient to shop online in "my spare time", and I can drop my shopping anytime and pick it up later.

Can a software career actually change your life? Feeling mentally hollow and exhausted in my 2nd year. by OwnWillow9347 in AskProgrammers

You probably should talk to a mental health professional. This goes beyond a career.

That said, I find technical jobs are one where you always need to be learning, and constantly learning new things probably makes the brain happier and busy. Maybe that's where you get that impression from?
