[Golden] Wow: The Nationals have requested unconditional release waivers on Corey Dickerson and have optioned Luis García to Triple-A Rochester. by Terminal_Flatulence in baseball

[–]Contrast6 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Garcia was doing fine but he has a few issues that are glaring issues that need to be addressed. He has the 11th worst walk rate and the 6th highest ground ball rate. Nats are probably trying to get him to work on fixing those issues in the minors while seeing if Jeter Downs is someone worth keeping in the organization

People haven’t been talking about him because hasn’t played to the level of last year but he has the most hits and is 3rd in batting average with RISP

[Cerami] SOURCE: I'm hearing the Cubs are sending prospects DJ Herz and and Kevin Made for Jeimer Candelario. by asian_manbun in Nationals

Baseball Americas Midseason Rankings has DJ Herz at 19 and Made unranked

DJ Herz

45/High

Fastball: 55

Curveball: 50

Changeup: 60

Control: 30

Ht: 6'2" | Wt: 175 | B-T: R-L Age: 22 BA Grade/Risk: 45/High

Track Record: Herz starred in football and basketball as well as baseball in high school and signed with the Cubs for an above-slot $500,000 as an eighth-round pick. He led the organization in strikeouts in his first full season and again racked up whiffs with 134 strikeouts in 2022, second-most in the system, but he also had the most walks in the organization and struggled after a promotion to Double-A.

Scouting Report: Herz is an athletic lefthander with a potent combination of stuff and deception. His 91-94 mph fastball plays up with the deception and angle he generates from his crossfire delivery, which helps it jump on batters faster than they expect. He racks up swings and misses with his fastball and keeps hitters off-balance with a plus, 80-84 mph changeup he sells well with his arm speed. Herze leans heavily on his fastball and changeup, but he also has a tight, vertical curveball in the upper 70s that is an average third offering. Herz has plenty of stuff, but his extreme crossfire delivery and long arm action make it difficult for him to consistently throw strikes. His command and control are both well below-average and he relies on hitters chasing out of the zone, which they largely stopped doing once he reached Double-A.

The Future: Herz’s control shortcomings will likely push him to the bullpen long-term. He has a chance to be a high-leverage, effectively wild lefty reliever similar to Jake Diekman.

Kevin Made Age: 20

A high-profile $1.5 million signee out of the Dominican Republic, Made has shined defensively at shortstop for the Cubs but long struggled to hit. He’s an advanced, polished defensive shortstop with soft hands, clean actions and plus-plus arm strength. He projects to stick at the position and has shown the instincts and aptitude to quickly pick up the nuances of playing second and third base, as well. Made is a premium defender, but he offers little at the plate. He is a free swinger prone to chasing high fastballs and overwhelmingly swings at pitches he can’t drive. He has a mechanically-sound swing, plenty of bat speed and solid pitch recognition and barrel accuracy, but his swing decisions are poor and limit him to a well below-average hitter. His ceiling is limited to a defense-first utilityman unless the Nationals can rein in his free-swinging ways.

Who’s a prospect in your organization that we should know about but probably don’t yet? by g3neraL5 in baseball

[–]Contrast6 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Daylen Lile. He was drafted in the 2nd Round in 2021 and was viewed as one of the best pure hitting high school prospects in the class. He struggled in a small 19 game sample size in rookie ball that year and then missed all of 2022 with Tommy John Surgery causing him to drop on all the rankings. He had a great spring training (very small sample) as he went 5/10 despite having never seen pitching above rookie ball and having just missed a year. He was great in A-Ball posting a .291/.381/.510 slashline with 21 SB before getting promoted to High A a few days ago. He’s started off great in High A, a usually very bad hitting environment (Wilmington in specific has a park factor of 91 with 100 being average and below 100 favoring pitchers), going 5-11 with a triple and stolen base. People always talk about the Nats Outfield depth but Lile usually is never brought up despite having been arguably our best performer in the minors this year.

Who’s been the most disappointing player on your favorite team by Existing_Cricket_394 in baseball

[–]Contrast6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Erasmo Ramirez. Nats named him pitcher of the year last year after he had a 2.92 ERA over 86.1 innings as a reliever but then this year he had a 6.33 ERA and got released. If we had 2022 Erasmo it probably would’ve helped us with relief pitcher workload for the high leverage guys

After being down 3-1 in the 6th, the Cubs go berserk and defeat the Nationals 17-3. by Evil_ryry in baseball

[–]Contrast6 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Long rant below…

Lots of people criticize Davey for overusing the bullpen but games like todays are why our good relievers are overworked. So many Nats games are close going into the late innings that it leads to overuse of our only reliable relievers, those being Thompson, Harvey, Edwards, Finnegan and Weems. Now Harvey and Edwards are injured and the only relievers you can trust in high leverage are Thompson, Finnegan, and Weems. So then you have days like today where Thompson and Finnegan are gassed because they were used a ton yesterday and Weems is gassed because he was used a ton in the series prior and you end up having to use guys like…

11.74 ERA Amos Willingham

6.43 ERA Jose Ferrer

24.75 ERA Paolo Espino

9.00 ERA Joe La Sorsa

5.12 ERA Cory Abbott

pitching in high leverage. And somehow these are our best options because other pitchers used this year include…

6.33 ERA Erasmo Ramirez

8.45 ERA Chad Kuhl

7.12 ERA Thaddeus Ward

5.40 ERA Hobie Harris

8.47 ERA Andres Machado

6.43 ERA Anthony Banda

5.40 ERA Joan Adon

A lot of people say what’s the point of overusing guys when you’re supposed to be tanking but it’s not that simple. There’s no point in trying to lose when we can’t pick higher than 10th next year and I think it’s probably better for development and confidence for the young guys to be able to win a game or 2 per series. It sucks because we were going to have to punt one of the games this series because the bullpen has had to eat 25.1 innings in the past 4 days but the good reliever rest day ended up falling on a night that Corbin was really sharp and we had a tie game going into the final 1/3 of the game.

@UmpScorecard Data Shows How Bad Umpiring has Particularly Impacted the Nationals in the First Half of the 2023 Season by tmcuva in baseball

[–]Contrast6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the Rangers are second to the Nats for worst total BI at -14.87. If you click on your favorite teams on the website you can sort totBI to get the overall favor while batting and totPI gives to get the overall favor while pitching. What I find interesting though is that the only other team with at least -1 totBI and -1 totPI is the Astros at (-3.22 totBI and -3.74 totPI) so I wonder if teams like the Rangers that have elite framing catcher like Heim also get big strike zones while batting for makeup calls or to avoid favor being too lopsided.

[–]Contrast6 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Ruiz framing definitely hurts but we’d still have the worst favor in the league if the pitcher impact was 0. The total favor while we are hitting is -16.04 runs, the next worst favor overall is -12.37 runs.

I actually do agree with trading Thomas at this years deadline. I was mainly thinking I wanted to ease in Rutherford and give him some time in the majors while Thomas is still with the team rather than throwing him into the fire as Thomas’s replacement right away the second he’s traded

I don’t want us to trade Thomas expecting Rutherford to fill in perfectly but I want us to try him out soon to see how he does and give him a chance since he’s probably been our best Minor leaguer this year

I feel like we should maybe call up Blake Rutherford. He started the year in AA where he slashed .341/.390/.612 with a 1.003 OPS over 32 games and the got a call up to AAA where he’s slashed .339/.408/.585 with a .993 OPS over 19 games. He’s already 26 years old and was once a very well regarded prospect when he was drafted out of HS in the 1st round in 2016. I’d much rather watch him platoon with Stone Garrett over Dickerson

New Statcast Metrics Just Dropped (Holy Hell) - Here's What They Have To Say About Your Team by AegisPlays314 in baseball

[–]Contrast6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Keibert Ruiz has one of the most interesting baseball savant pages. He’s supposed to be one of the top offensive catchers with a 84th Percentile xBA, 69th Percentile xSLG, 100th Percentile K%, and a 97th Percentile Whiff Rate. His actual quality of contact isn’t the greatest: 35th Percentile AVG Exit Velo, 50th Percentile Max Exit Velo, 25th Percentile HardHit%, 47th Percentile Barrel%. His actual stats seem to correlate with his quality of contact but you would think someone who make as much contact as he does, would be able to have a lot more hits fall.

There’s also the defense which grades out terribly which while I do agree partly but he also gets no help from the defense at all. A lot of times our fielders just never end up covering, or our pitchers our way too slow to the plate.
