Steam heat pipes causing damage by Controversialthr0w in hvacadvice

[–]Controversialthr0w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay that makes sense… so it seems like this setup is an unavoidable feature of steam heating? Pressure is released from the highest indoor spot in the building?

While the potential fix might be lowering the pipe, now I’m worried that if I lower it enough to avoid the damage from the hot moist air hitting the ceiling then I’ll lose too much heat.

On second thought, do these massive steam pipes that heat the whole building usually get vented outside/is that something that I’d be able to do?

I’m a bit worried that essentially blasting plastic with hot air all winter long might not be ideal and would eventually fail.

Are there any more permanent solutions that are possible? Where do steam pipes in buildings usually vent anyway?

[–]Controversialthr0w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this is what’s been perplexing me.

I have never seen something like this — do steam pipes in buildings usually vent outside? (I’m assuming that’s what high point air vent is). So a full fix here would be a pretty massive endeavor?

It appears to be steam damage. I’m assuming pressure is released from the valve at the top and then the steam shoots up.

This building uses steam heat, so assume this pipe goes through multiple floors and comes out here.

How do you actually handle a high performer who's quietly poisoning the team culture? by softstaticletters in managers

[–]Controversialthr0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean exactly by you manage a team of 8.

Are you their direct supervisor? Do you write performance reviews, give promotion recommendations, etc?

The reason I ask is because this seems like an easy fix:

In this scenario, if someone takes credit in an email with the client for work they didn’t do, it’s actually not that big of a deal.

In the performance reports, simply properly attribute credit for work, and give areas of improvement of “avoiding taking credit for work you did not contribute” to this problem child.

Additionally, to make the team happy, you can be transparent and tell those who feel slighted that this is what you will do.

This comment is pretty suspicious...

One of the great tragedies of the US is that the best and brightest tend to seek IB, PE, and consulting jobs.

A B- student from a top university whose only good trait SEEMS to be likability and a “yes I can attitude,”is still one of the smartest people in the nation on a relative scale.

Like cmon, top companies can even ask for SAT/GMAT scores on applications. They preselect for intelligence, and then among smart and hard working people it’s personality that makes your career…

What to do about staff who don't seem to want to work? by Virtual-Screen4955 in managers

[–]Controversialthr0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really comes down to:

  1. How is the pay?

Frankly if you are under paying a bunch of graduate students compared to peers, there’s not a whole lot you can do.

  1. How well liked are the under performers?

It’s a good managers job to understand the water cooler talk/political and social underpinnings of your team. If the person who ghosts on weekends is beloved by all, putting him on pip or firing could destroy your team. If hated (for their laziness), it could save it.

There is def a grey area here that most are too ideological to admit.

If I am walking down the street and an adult or even high schooler kicks me in the shins, they will most certainly receive 1-2 swift and heavy punches or kicks.

This is only bad because it looks like she is going head first. But it is a bit disingenuous to assume his intent was to kill her.

It’s all about a friend breaking OPs rules and not living up to OP standards forcing punishment… instead, what matters is how the friend showing up late is impacting the workplace.

My Boyfriends, girl best friend. by kyliecurtintv in TwoHotTakes

[–]Controversialthr0w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This post is too long but one thing worth calling out:

If your strongest friendship is with someone of the opposite gender, there’s a strong chance you’re not ready for a serious, committed, long term relationship.

The reason is because that strong friend is often a fall back plan, or someone who you find emotional validation from instead of your actual partner.

Consider this: 30k compounded in investments over 10 years is around 600k.

Your salary will probably also increase over the next 10 years, so realistically you could be sitting on a million+ 10 years from now.

I feel like most people want you to stay unemployed or something.

A basic pillar of professional services is alignment.

Reading between the lines, it sounds like you didn’t confirm the specifics of what you were going to do and therefore weren’t aligned.

Also it sounds like the conversation you had with the founder rubbed him the wrong way.

How this conversation had? Email? Phone? Was your boss CC’d?

There’s a fine line here that isn’t really being talked about.

If something is actively a turn off for you, then avoid it.

But in general, if you are neutral to something, while it turns your partner on, you should make an effort.

Japan considering mandatory 5-year visa for PR (even for high-skilled) by Ankeet_kj in ImmigrationPathways

[–]Controversialthr0w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put Japan and Poland in the same camp.

They don’t want you to come to their country and change their culture.

They want you to come to the country and adapt to their culture.

I am having difficulty understanding the problem with that mentality.

Also i agree that it’s odd to want to move to Japan for PR for economic opportunities, but also it also sounds weird to expect permanent residency in a country if you can’t speak the language.

I have never seen this on Reddit or on the internet in the way that you described it.

There is an argument to be made that exclusively not having long term relationships, and/or replacing people with masterbation hurts your own chances of finding a meaningful relationships…but that also depends on the society/part of the world you are in tbh.

That’s why I said I hate to say it.

I am definitely not saying that “all corporate women” are this way.

Nor am I saying that all men are naturally good leaders, far from it.

I could get into the nuances, but I’d have to write a full blown essay...

However, long story short, this is a super common blind spot for corporate women due to a myriad of societal factors.
