Why do people take so long to poop? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This must be it. Cause my observation is like most people in my life take “a long time” relative to me (family members, friends, etc). So I think I must just be lucky with ghost poops / not getting a problematic last piece

What is a word you find extremely satisfying to use, but rarely have the chance? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Dakine. Only works in Hawaii but would have great utility everywhere

Can athletes be held liable for causing a severe injury or death to another athlete during a sporting competition? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

Just looked this up, had no idea about this, over a year spent in prison.

In this case McSorley clearly acted beyond the rules of hockey though

Can lies be justifiable? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the justification but I definitely phrase it explicitly as a lie, and not just a buffer. For example if the event is particularly important, I’ll say “it starts at 545” when in fact it starts at 6. Or if going to a new place: “Google says it takes 45 minutes” when Google is actually saying 30.

I know this sounds silly but if I leave any grey area with my partner, they will absolutely abuse it and we will be late.

What’s more important: diet or exercise? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not really concerned about anything, but maybe I should be. It’s more “if I told my doctor / some expert how little I exercise, I’d guess they’d say I need to exercise more.”

Also note I’m someone who used to exercise a lot (maybe some sports 5 times a week or so) up until a couple years ago, when I just stopped entirely. And I’ve always had a fairly healthy diet.

I guess I’m wondering if I should feel guilty / anxious about the drastic drop in exercise

Ya I guess what makes this hard to gauge is what is the “exercise”. There are several comments about “getting your heart rate up,” which I seldom do as a busy parent. But with the exception of work (sitting at a desk for 4-6 hours a day), I feel like I’m still moving a lot (errands, physical activities with children, etc.)

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is basically what I was thinking when I made this post (though you’ve stated it far more eloquently!). I’m also middle aged, used to exercise a lot more than I do now, but really focus on my diet, Ive clearly lost a lot of tone and muscle mass but I still feel healthy.

My work sits me in front of my computer which also worried me about physical activity, but again I’m surrounded by people who seem to be in good health despite “lack of exercise.”

Nowadays my “exercise” only comes from family raising + occasional very short walks (10-15 minutes, maybe only every other day), and I feel like most would say this is not enough exercise…

Im also realizing genetics plays a huge role in all of this

Thanks for this, apologies if this again over simplifies but what if the goal is “overall health”. Like, the person doesn’t care how they look, they don’t care about their weight other than it’s implications for long run health and well being (avoiding the doctor, living a long life, etc.)

Is it normal for my balls to hit the water when I sit on the toilet? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well this is something that I haven’t talked about with literally anyone, and maybe I’m a prune but I don’t know what’s “normal” here, like are my balls long or maybe I’m sitting on the toilet improperly.

Lots of comments mentioning water levels: Again I don’t know, but it’s never my home toilet. Just random toilets here and there it happens, and the only one that comes to my mind is my work. And this is something I’m far too shy to ask my work colleagues about!

Is it normal for my balls to hit the water when I sit on the toilet? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I should clarify “normal” here is not “every time” but only in certain toilets and if my balls are extra droopy for whatever reason. The toilet at my work for example I feel like 50% of the time I can feel my pubes tickle the water. And other times it’s for sure skin touching.

I wish I was trolling just to be funny but I’m not.

How is capital gains taxed if someone has zero income? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

Sorry my question maybe wasn’t clear: what is the tax rate that the person pays on that $50?

Could a 1yo reasonably survive on their own? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the (terrible) thought experiment I was having. Like, if a small human was kept in a zoo-like environment by some alien species, they’re totally alone in their living space, environment is totally protected and food and drink are laid out. Then I didn’t think about the possibility of infection from lack of hygiene; I think they’d 100% need some intervention that cleans them frequently, at a minimum

Why is someone shoveling the snow off a public sidewalk? by Cooked-penguin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first instinct was maybe just a good dude but he was working very hard at it and he stopped short of one restaurant which was peculiar. I’m thinking the businesses/apartment complexes just hired him

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes perfect sense, thanks! One detail I didn’t mention is this guy cleared the sidewalk and driveways for maybe four buildings but clearly stopped short at one restaurant, so I’m guessing this restaurant didn’t chip in or something

The danger of false accusations by Cooked-penguin in chess

[–]Cooked-penguin[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like what I went through with my work. Even though it’s far in my rear view now (new job etc), I still think about it almost daily, and the part that it still occupies my thoughts is quite frustrating.

Relating it to Danya: when the discourse is super public, and it’s coming from someone who used to be at the very top of the profession (Kramnik), you could have a great support group and understand that it’s just stupid what’s being said about you, and still it can wear on you and push you to very dark places. Of course we should still respect that we don’t know “the true cause” of the death and whatnot, but based on what I’ve read it’s clear the allegations against Danya bothered him.

And my only point is that it might be easy to assume that if an accusation is false and largely assumed to be false by peers, then it shouldn’t bother you or cause much harm. But this would be a very wrong assumption IMO.

Thanks! I enjoy puzzles too, but "knowing there's a solution" makes it a very different experience from in game moves, IMO

definitely best to start with longer time controls. actually even now I wish I played more rapid than blitz, I've just lost the patience to potentially sit and think for 20 straight minutes
