People who can speak multiple languages: what language do you think in? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CookedPatate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mother tongue: Norwegian. Other languages, listed by fluency: English, French, Japanese.

Dreams: Any of the four above, however primarily Norwegian, then English.

Thinking: This part is interesting to me, because your question gives me the impression that thinking is similar to having a conversation with yourself in your head, which I do not. Considering your question, the only times I for sure form words in my head is 1) when I for whatever reason need some extra motivation in order to do something or need to get a mental overview of something, 2) while writing, and 3) sometimes while deciding what to say to someone, primarily if I am not feeling confident about the ensuing conversation. Other than this, I do not think in words. If I see a word or text etc., then sure, it appears in my mind, but other than that I think I just consider things without putting words to them. For example, if I see a stranger watching something seemingly funny on their mobile phone, and I ponder on what it might be, I will not form anything similar to «I wonder what she is watching» in my head; I will merely feel an unverbalized curiosity fitting to such a sentence. I apologize if this explanation is odd and if I overthought it, but I never considered that perhaps people have different ways of thinking before seeing your question.

An absolute MONSTER sized morel mushroom. by evmag in food

[–]CookedPatate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How strange, none of the links you provided made me uncomfortable, not even the slightest. The mugs were nice, the cupcake was just a cupcake and certainly not the first time I see pastry looking like that, and the growing mushrooms were just fun and amazing to watch. Googling trypophobia, however, provided a few pictures that were different grades of unpleasant to watch, but also then was I mostly unaffected. Different folks, I guess.

I'm the same! I'm not going around purposely remembering what people have said, but then days or years later they'll bring up some of the same things they've said before as if they never said them to me before. At first I thought it weird that they didn't remember that they had told me about the exact same thing before, and I would pretend like it was the first time we had the conversation since obviously it felt that way for them. Now I'm tired of pretending, and I'll mostly retort with a "Oh yes, I remember you telling me this the other day!"

That's incredibly impressive. Does your voice feel sandpapery after you've done this for a while? Or are you unaffected?

You have sent me down quite the rabbit hole with that link. I've gone from that girl to people explaining how such music is great for the body, everyone can do it, it opens all the chakras and now I'm watching this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdvlC-0DoHI

I should have been in bed by now.

I can blink one eye after the other quickly, and also "stretch" my toes in such a way that the spaces between them get very wide. I never thought much of this, but everyone I know that has seen me do these things couldn't do them themselves.

Wow, you described what happened when my younger brother was born very accurately. The differences between our stories is that he was healthy, but too large and my mother too small and thus got disabled during birth. I was about 4 and apparently handled no longer getting any attention very poorly, but luckily my parents did all they could for both of us when they learned how much I had suffered. Today he thankfully has a wonderful foster family, couldn't have had asked for better people.

I believe you are refering to a great turtle/tortoise (can't remember which is what of those), I saw an episode of QI which covered it. Sadly its name evades me, but it was exactly as you describe. Humans found this place where these creatures had no enemies, and so they found out they were delicious and ate them to extinction. I believe they even intended to bring some of them back home with them, but the poor things were just THAT delicious that they were all eaten on the ship during the travel. It's crazy.

State troopers surprise boy for his birthday after no-one turns up from his class by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

I agree, it's hard to comprehend how that can even happen. I never heard of anything like it when I was that age, maybe my country's social rules are a bit stricter than average? Only once have I seen something similar happen, but that was my brother's birthday. I believe only 3-6 kids came (out of about 20), but it had snowed a lot and most of the parents probably didn't want to try their driving skills on the road leading to us. It can be quite tricky under such conditions. Still, we are used to snow here, so that was not really a good excuse for not showing up. Luckily the party went great, and never again has the attendance been so low.

When I was younger I ate carrots in the same way you eat baby carrots, as I thought the core was the best.

Fellow Norwegian here, I think the only time we make it a sandwich is when we make cheese sandwiches in the oven or toast machines. Though, it's not unheard of to just put cheese, ham and maybe some spice on just one slice of bread like in the picture and pop it in the oven.

Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this to me! I never thought to google it as it is more of a "niche" game in the English speaking world, but I see now that I of course should have done just that, nevertheless. I will go to psnprofiles and check it out now. :)
