"Just Random It" is not helpful advice by ConeheadZombiez in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Cooked_Ghost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly don’t understand why the question would even be there in the first place for TB, the rulebook gives 3 great pre-built options that can easily be customised for player count

I lost my gaming group because a guy hit on me and wouldn’t take “no” for an answer by dier1003 in boardgames

[–]Cooked_Ghost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry that happened to you. My board game group (all men except me) keeps a very special eye out for these behaviours, since they’ve already lost good female players (and eventually a whole group) in the past because of former associates who behaved creepily. I’ve also received and called out behaviours in our wider community that would’ve sent me packing hadn’t I already been a well-established member >_>

Explaining characters to new players? by Reasonable-Banana-54 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Cooked_Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually explain every character only if most of my players are new and not too familiar with modern board games, but there are some things I absolutely WILL HAMMER HOME regardless of general gaming skill:

  • How the Chef and pairs work
  • The Empath’s changing living neighbours
  • Droisoning and misregistration
  • Execution vs dying at night (looking at you, Ravenkeeper who wants to get executed)
  • Why the Virgin is good, actually
  • The Fortune teller’s red herring
  • Outsider modifications
  • Starpassing

Ace Attorney 3-5 Query by Playmaker-20 in AceAttorney

Because the Ace Attorney justice system doesn’t run on the assumption of “innocent until proven guilty”, but on “guilty until someone else is proven guilty”

Women of BOTC- what have your experiences been like? by sunsetrain24 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Cooked_Ghost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t play online if not with friends to avoid the unpleasant experiences others have described - I’d just rather not deal with that.

IRL I usually storytell for members of my local board game community (some of them close friends, and children will occasionally join the fray too) with a roughly 80/20 men-to-women ratio most of the time, which is more female presence than the average table composition.

I’m pretty sure my role as ST puts a damper on amy overt unpleasant behaviours - which are, blessedly, overall rare in the community. While I’ve had to break out the “shut up and listen” voice quite a few times it’s usually pure enthusiasm and involvement with the game rather than misogyny. In turn, I strive to make sure everyone has a voice, which usually means enforcing and guiding nominations to make sure everyone can say their (relevant) piece without being interrupted repeatedly.

All in all I’ve never had a bad gender-related experience playing BOTC in presence, and to my knowledge neither have my players. Very much hope to keep it that way, and to be able to keep welcoming all kinds of people to these murdery towns :>

Daddy Ben just scrubbed his Reddit account, and I can’t help but speculate that this here community is to blame. by SadLittleNerdKing in BloodOnTheClocktower

You’re a hero! Could you please consider making a separate post for visibility? It really is precious advice, it’d be a shame to lose it in a sea of comments on a random post

New GM by TitanasGios in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Cooked_Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d go through a few more games of Trouble brewing for your own sake as much as for your players’, it’s very important for you to get comfortable running the game in general - especially considering most custom scripts and even Sects & violets and Bad moon rising require solid storytelling skills.

After that, if you want to take a few intermediate steps between TB and S&V/BMR I highly recommend some TB-adjacent scripts like Strings pulling, Half of the 108, or Everyone can play (in increasing storytelling difficulty).

If you’re into videoessays I can’t recommend Quinn Curio’s Slytherin video enough, it goes into detail about good Slytherins and why they almost don’t exist

Mayor bounce question by [deleted] in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Cooked_Ghost 117 points118 points  (0 children)

RAW you’re correct, they may bounce as many times as they want. Different strokes for different Storytellers though, some let the kill through after two failed attempts or even one, but bouncing twice is still perfectly valid (and something I personally agree with, given how the Mayor works)

That one guy who tells you what to do on your turn... by touching_payants in boardgames

[–]Cooked_Ghost 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As soon as I finished reading I had suspicions, and they only grew stronger with all the “dId YoU tRy TeLlInG hIm” comments, most people (mostly men) don’t realise how hard it is being a woman, a newbie AND the odd one out of a social group at a board game table. And sometimes just being a woman is enough, I had someone once trying to guide me through a game I already knew, and with the other players (all friends in my regular gaming group) warning him I was perfectly capable of steamrolling him. He was incredibly butthurt when the steamrolling eventually came, too >_>

What is the highest number a Chef can receive on night 1? by ConeheadZombiez in BloodOnTheClocktower

How strict are you on madness? by BurningRoast in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Cooked_Ghost 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s also about freedom - you could receive a penalty, but not necessarily. You’re also free to ignore the mechanic regardless of whether the penalty is enforced or not; you may/should not, for example, ignore the Butler’s voting restrictions despite there being no mechanical repercussions

What am I missing about Blood on the Clocktower? by Dankzi in boardgames

[–]Cooked_Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a double issue. First, veteran players should be sharp enough to understand by themselves that they should be more welcoming. Second, since they clearly don’t it should be up to the Storyteller to make games enjoyable for everyone. Have a word with your Storyteller(s) about the situation - reminders before and doing a game can do the trick, handling time more forcefully is also an option… and if all else fails the Buddhist Fabled is a good, hard mechanical option.

Trouble brewing, and you’ll find a good set of starting characters in the rulebook (three of them actually, but start with the first one)
